soccer'd be closer the mark i think

the ad for this last night was horrible though using clemens to represent the us seems about what we deserve.

Friend o' W!

(I never watch soccer)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 14:11 (eighteen years ago) link

i thought it was funny when, reading christina kahrl's chat transcript, when she poopoo'd the classic toward the end, it really seemed like she was just worried it would mess up their 'real' stats and 'real' projections for the 'real' games and teams, etc.
blah.

the leglo (the leglo), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:11 (eighteen years ago) link

and i still like the fact that she mentioned archie cianfrocco.

C'mon, 'projections and stats' are your ...projection! She just thinks it'll affect the regular season, ie injuries, wins and losses. I wanna see how the WBC plays out, but I never watch the Olympics myself. Around here we certainly treat the reg season as the"actual ballgames" too.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 18:33 (eighteen years ago) link

The rest of the world has no trouble seeing league football and national play as both "actual games matches;" perhaps it's true that Americans are just not as sophisticated

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 20:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Or it's just that it's the first year, and the WBC hasn't achieved an identity yet.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 21:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I prefer to think of myself as unsophisticated, but you may be correct

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 22:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Team USA is pretty good.

the depth of the relief corps is very key, i think.

schedule yet?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Team USA's outfield is a bit weak (compared to say, DR or Venezuela), unless we're talking about their defense.

schedule linked above

let the trash-talkin' begin:

“I will make them see that they won’t beat Japan for the next 30 years,” said Ichiro Suzuki in an interview after the first day of Japanese World Baseball Classic practice yesterday.

After the Japanese team’s practice at the Fukuoka Yahoo Dome yesterday, Ichiro said, “Not only will we win, but also we’ll make Japanese baseball fans feel that they saw a truly great game. I want to make [Korea and Taiwan] see that they will not be able to beat Japan in next 30 years.”

Ichiro: Korea Smells Like Garlic
Ichiro’s provocative remark is nothing new. Back in 1997, Ichiro, a member of the Orix Blue Wave at the time, visited Korea for friendly baseball games against Korean pro teams. When asked what his first impression of Korea was, he replied, “It smells like garlic.”

Ichiro’s remark angered many Korean players. Pitcher Sohn Min-han (Lotte) said, “Hearing what he said, I want to make him eat his own words by beating the Japanese team.”

“I have been called five times to play on the national team, and from 2000 Sydney Olympics through the 2002 Busan Asian games, the Korea national team has never been defeated by Japan,” said the team’s slugger Lee Byeong-gyu (LG). “We have many world-class ballplayers on the Korea national team; we won’t be easy to beat,” Lee added confidently.

The World Baseball Classic preliminary round match between Korea and Japan will be held on March 5 at the Tokyo Dome.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 20:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I think the Korean team's chances are hindered by the fact that their two best position players, Hee-Seop Choi and Seung-Yeop Lee, are both first basemen. Lee hit .260 with 30 HRs and 82 RBI for Bobby V's Chiba Lotte Mariners last season.

Pitcher Sohn Min-han (Lotte) said, “Hearing what he said, I want to make him eat his own words by beating the Japanese team.”

I bet this quote was 100000X more vicious (and entertaining) in the original Korean.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 23 February 2006 00:30 (eighteen years ago) link

"I want to make him eat his own words, perhaps with a zesty kimchee garnish."

Nice overview of the burgeoning Venezuela/Dominican rivalry (luckily, and perhaps unsurprisingly, they play against each other in the first game of pool D). I really wish I could get ESPN Deportes; something tells me that watching all these early rounds on tape-delay is gonna get old fast.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Senator Leiter makes the USA pitching staff after Wagner and Sabathia pull out. So, Venezuela's a lock?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 March 2006 14:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I can't say I'm surprised that last night's games weren't really worth staying up all night for.

The photo of the Cuban baseball team in today's NYT is just astonishing. It comes after the jump. They're all looking right at you with the same kinds of faces you see in very old photographs, when no one felt any obligation to smile and fancy cameras were curious devices. It is incredible. The looks on their faces is just so relaxed and intelligent and rough.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 March 2006 19:07 (eighteen years ago) link

It's hard to get the impact on the web, with this small size, but here is the photo:

It really is worth it to buy the paper today to see that pic nice and big. They did a great job with the color, too.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 March 2006 21:21 (eighteen years ago) link

He's a cuban photographer working with the AP so I don't think it's gonna be available anywhere else.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 6 March 2006 23:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Awesome photo. I stayed up late to watch Japan's first three games, being the night owl that I am. I'd like to see them and Cuba both throw down, what with everyone picking USA/DR/Venezuela.
