hibernaculum is v. v. good. at 36 minutes it could stand to be twice as long but I guess I should be grateful for whatever we get out of these folks at this point. fuzzy + warm, like sliding down a fallopian tube stuffed full w/ tribbles.

not sure how it measures up against their recent output, haven't really paid attention to them since the early 90s.

I like it, but it's definitely Hex Part 2, and points the way toward their next album, which will have guest guitar from Mr. Excitement himself, Bill Frisell! Don't know if my heart can handle it...

unperson, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

when "miami morning coming down" gets going it sounds like it should be playing over some 70s john carpenter anti-hero skulking off into the sunset as the credits roll... this is a positive recommendation.

Edward III, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:18 (seventeen years ago) link

The EP is incredible. So is the DVD. DC = genius.

Manalishi, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 04:19 (seventeen years ago) link

There's an extra-special EMP bonus for Pop Conference attendees -- Earth will be doing an in-store at Easy Street on the Saturday.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 04:24 (seventeen years ago) link

(I should obv. emphasize this is in Seattle.)

"a harder, more rock and American Gospel-oriented, and improvisational direction"

W4LTER, Monday, 17 December 2007 08:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Pentastar has always been my favorite. Can't think of an album that's better to work to. Drone rock at its finest and most minimal.

Nate Carson, Monday, 17 December 2007 11:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Earth 2 is classic, I know of no other album that can be played in my apartment that will have my neighbors friends start knocking.

Andi Mags, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 01:57 (sixteen years ago) link

earth's definitely classic. i'm kicking myself now because i saw pentastar for super cheap but passed it up. earth 2 is great but i like the sparse country drone stuff too. hex is excellent.

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:11 (sixteen years ago) link

not really 'country' obv. but you get the idea.

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, like the new one, you mean?

W4LTER, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:12 (sixteen years ago) link

the brand new one is the one with Frisell on it, yes?

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:12 (sixteen years ago) link

yesh

W4LTER, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I was introe'd to these guys on the weekend via Pentastar, which was really good!

Trayce, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:16 (sixteen years ago) link

"i'm kicking myself now because i saw pentastar for super cheap but passed it up."

the new reissues are cheap. vinyl is like ten bucks.

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:22 (sixteen years ago) link

cool!

haven't heard the new one, xposts.

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I had a flat promo cd of Pentastar that I bought when it was new for a few bucks. Kicked myself for years on missing the original vinyl. Once I saw the reissues advertised, I bought myself a nice 12" version and Dj the finale on a pretty regular basis. One of my favorite guitar solos ever--right up there with Paul Leary and Elliot Easton as far as its succintness, melodic quality, and epic feel.

You guys know that Cobain played on the first album, right?

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Earth will still occasionally end a set with something from Pentastar. (They did at the in-store last spring during EMP)

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:34 (sixteen years ago) link

x-post - Nate, yup

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:34 (sixteen years ago) link

i still have my promo cd of pentastar. i love that album too. i guess i like it cuz it's the most "rock" earth album. i dunno. it's just cool.

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 03:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I wish there was a whole genre of albums like Pentastar.

I once had a dream that I started a tribute band to that album called HighH Command. Yess, with 3 "H"s.

ps - where do you live Scott? I owe you a bong hit someday.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 04:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I like Pentastar, but then I put on something by Fu Manchu or Torche, and I feel like changing to an Earth album where Dylan is undoubtedly trumping everyone. Does that make sense?

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 05:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I love Torche too though.

filthy dylan, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 06:04 (sixteen years ago) link

not really into the hendrix cover. is pentastar the only earth album with vocals?

am0n, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 06:33 (sixteen years ago) link

extra-capsular has some vocals.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 09:01 (sixteen years ago) link

"I like Pentastar, but then I put on something by Fu Manchu or Torche, and I feel like changing to an Earth album where Dylan is undoubtedly trumping everyone. Does that make sense?

It makes sense except that I just don't hear it that way. It seems so incredibly stoned and laid back. They're not even trying to rock really... and yet in places it does anyway. It's got a total savant quality that probably shouldn't work, but does (for me anyway).

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 13:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Pentastar was always my favourite, was great when they played coda maestoso in f(flat) minorin Glasgow when they toured with Sunn o)))

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Dud = searching this band on ILM.

Hibernaculum is one of my favorite (non)albums of 2007, like this probably more than the older stuff by them I've heard. The DVD was crap though. Is the new one out yet?

sonderangerbot, Friday, 21 December 2007 17:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I liked the DVD. But yes, I agree Hibernaculum was excellent.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 21 December 2007 17:11 (sixteen years ago) link

There were some interesting interviews, but visually it didn't really match the music, all grey and grainy.

sonderangerbot, Friday, 21 December 2007 17:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Does the new one have a release date?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Monday, 24 December 2007 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link

There's nothing on the Southern Lord site about it. It sounds great on first listen, though.

three weeks pass...

Blasting Earth 2 and my left speaker just vibrates itself off the shelf and explodes. :(

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 20 January 2008 01:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Dylan would want it that way.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 January 2008 01:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes he would!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 January 2008 06:41 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Picked up the new Earth today at a Zavvi in Dublin, for only 15 euro -- I didn't think it was out till the end of the month. Anyway, on first pass it's very good, with real monsoon-rains-in-the-desert vibe to it. Certainly not drone doom, though.

MacDara, Thursday, 7 February 2008 19:00 (sixteen years ago) link

four weeks pass...

I'll second the above post -- the new album is FANTASTIC, one of the best things I've heard in '08 so far. Expands a bit further on the americana, folk and gospel influences that surfaced on Hex and Hibernaculum. Perhaps the best album they've done!

the new one is quite remarkably mellow and spacey. it is also very very very fucking good.

J0hn D., Sunday, 29 June 2008 21:20 (fifteen years ago) link

It is. Was even better live too!

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 29 June 2008 22:00 (fifteen years ago) link

^^^^^ This. It was the ideal disc for me to get acquainted with Southern Lord records (tho probably not representative of the label's artists).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 29 June 2008 22:20 (fifteen years ago) link

not at all representative, you're right, but definitely a nice gateway. check out some of the Boris stuff too, it's fairly accessible for Southern Lord. then move in deeper. lots o' good stuff on that label.

stephen, Sunday, 29 June 2008 23:44 (fifteen years ago) link

oh! and don't forget Earth's previous album, Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method, which is in relatively the same vein as the new one, and really really good as well. highly recommended.

stephen, Sunday, 29 June 2008 23:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Is the prior Earth album like the new one? Must investigate.

(Best thing I've heard on the Southern Lord label, BTW. Best cover art, too).

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 30 June 2008 00:14 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm with J0hn too. So fucking great. Perfect for the mood I've been in lately.

jonathan - stl, Monday, 30 June 2008 00:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes it is like the new one. But really the new songs are much better live. btw there's a tour only live album over at southernlord.com that was on sale at the european gigs, its awesome and quite ltd so you should all pick it up, its fab. I got mine in glasgow.
Also apparently on their current tour there's a new live cd that id love to buy. Anyone pick it up?

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 30 June 2008 00:25 (fifteen years ago) link

cool, thanks for the heads up on the 2006 tour cd.

stephen, Monday, 30 June 2008 00:27 (fifteen years ago) link

It's a great recording.
