M83?

As gygax would say, So... much.... rock.

That's why I like it so much. My main problem with shoegaze related music is the lack of rock, the lack of propulsion, especially in opposition with slower/quieter moments within the same song. Fennesz (and other laptoppers) can be beautiful and/or powerful, but there's not enough there for me to love - Endless Summer worked for me because the songs were there. I guess as much as I love 'noise', it's not enough by itself - I still need songs (which is why I loved Dntel's "Dream of Evan and Chan") and the noise must still serve the purpose of the emotion, or the melody or the groove. You could say that's it's one thing to love the feeling of the ocean, but I guess I still need to swim. Slowdive and similar slowgaze music is often too plodding and often has this odd goth affectation (which I think Ned is more fond of than I).

If "Dead Cities" was M83 trying to replicate "Loveless", then this one is M83 trying to replicate "Isn't Everything".

An interesting equation - I'd say they get even closer to the highs of Loveless on this record (although there's nothing identikit about it). They've found their own songwriting here - a continuation of "Run Into Flowers". I'll definitely have more specific things to say as I listen more.

Also, I don't really get what's cheesy about "A Guitar and a Heart", song or title-wise.

Kyle, they're a Canadian band on the Sonic Unyon label. The album came out in 1998. There must be an AMG entry for them. All three of their albums are well worth your time

Very, very well worth your time. I highly agree with Barry's assessment of Sianspheric, they are the spiff.

You are correct, sir! But if Slowdive started off Cure they ended up Durutti.

The guitar solo and the more mechanized-sounding beats on "A Guitar and a Heart" scream "take me back to 1983!" to me. It's like I'm listening to Loverboy or something. Although I'm going through the album a second time now and I like it a little more ... once the song builds up more and the song becomes denser I find myself getting more into it.

So did "Digital Love"!

(although yeah, I had actually skimmed past the beginning part before which takes a bit of getting used to. I think it's *classic* by the end!)

they are soon to be on my hard drive as well, thanks for the recommendation

There are some really odd voiceover bits on this that I think people are going to hate! Also, I think some of the vocals will bug some. Luckily for me, I love it all!

Dude, that really does sound like their Mogwai fetish is in full effect!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 02:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh no. There's not much in the way of Mogwai.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 02:17 (nineteen years ago) link

some of those voiceovers are so horrible. album is good though.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 02:17 (nineteen years ago) link

So the voiceovers are just straight up can't-be-ignored sprawling hoohah over the arrangements? Hm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 02:31 (nineteen years ago) link

yes, exactly! spoken by what seems to be a wide eyed forest creature.

Pitchfork is so lame.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 18:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, that pfork mini-review in full:

I'm always amazed how simple alterations to a group's sound can force a cringe from even the most ardent fans. Earlier this year, some Palace aficionados were disturbed by Will Oldham's conversion of his lo-fi porch songs into slick Memphis country. Well, there's more horror on the horizon-- the separation between M83 and Journey is thinner than you had possibly imagined. Consider "Guitar and a Heart", its monochrome chord progressions, minor-key guitar slides, and arena rock drum fills. Or its new-age synth-- sounds typically produced by scarf-wearing thirtysomethings, guys shielded by Casios stacked three high who only manage to play one note. Of course, you have no idea what my face looks like as I listen to this unfortunate misstep, so let me describe it to you-- it reads something like "eeew." [Joel Ebner; December 1st, 2004

He's obviously assuming that the entire album sounds like that -- he'll be a bit embarassed when he hears the whole thing!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 19:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Blame the trees, not the forest, Spencer!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 19:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I blame the forest, but I like certain trees!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 19:36 (nineteen years ago) link

sounding like journey could only make m83 better (i like that "don't save us from the flames" track, i'd like it better if it was a cover of "don't stop believing")

m. (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 19:45 (nineteen years ago) link

typical pitchfork, but the song really isn't all that remarkable either

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 19:47 (nineteen years ago) link

True, but there are stellar songs on that album. Tracks 2,4 and 8 spring to mind as likely singles.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 20:28 (nineteen years ago) link

See I hear "cheesiness" (for lack of a better word) as part of the band's appeal + the new one ups that aspect considerably.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Would you care to elaborate? That's the only track from the new album that actually has that kind of corny guitar sound, and only for the beginning. It strikes me as odd that the reviewer would choose that single track to completely decry their new output. It's actually a bit reckless and irresponsible.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:36 (nineteen years ago) link

It's actually a bit reckless and irresponsible.

You've been reading Pitchfork for how long exactly? I mean, I think both of those qualities are pretty sewn-in to fabric of Pitchfork's reputation/infamy/unpopularity around ILX.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm sure not as long as you gygax...

And there's nothing wrong with calling them out on something, even if it's been done many times before. I actually revived this on this thread in order to support the new M83 record in my own little way.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

...because the pitchfork review is really unfair - although I'm sure you'll just tell me that life is unfair or something.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 22:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Is it possible to like some Journey, most M83, and not be sentenced to eternal damnation?

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Thursday, 2 December 2004 00:07 (nineteen years ago) link

as Richard Dawson:

"Pitchfork SAYS:"

X

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 December 2004 00:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I had my own problems with that song (upthread) but that's more to do with the song not fitting in well with the rest of the album. In turn, Mr. Ebner's review doesn't accurately respresent anything M83 are doing on the other 95% of the album.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 2 December 2004 00:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Exactly.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 December 2004 00:14 (nineteen years ago) link

You mean it's OK to buy the new M83 once it's released...even without PFork's approval...even with The Essential Journey hiding in my basement?

Re: what I wrote four posts up, I should change "95%" to "70%".

"Don't Save Us From the Flames" is starting to sound like something from the "Flashdance" soundtrack to me. It's still awesome, though.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 7 January 2005 18:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Goddamn it, that is a great cover. It looks like an Andreas Gursky photo. What city is that?

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Friday, 7 January 2005 18:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Does look nice but I reserve judgment until I hear the thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 January 2005 18:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Its pretty good. Kinda reminds me of the Air soundtrack for Virgin Suicides.

hector (hector), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:33 (nineteen years ago) link

that's one wicked ass cover.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:34 (nineteen years ago) link

it reminds me of "world" by new order, only not as good.

(the cover, that is. not the music. which i haven't heard yet and am oddly apprehensive about.)

Well goddamn, a couple of songs in and it's blowing away the last album, which never really worked for me at all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:45 (nineteen years ago) link

And does anyone know what the sample from "Car Chase Terror!" is from? It's almost like John Waters did a slasher film.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I liked this one, but thought it was a bit OTT at times. Review at Stylus sometime this week. It's still good, mind.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 24 January 2005 09:57 (nineteen years ago) link

There aren't any samples on this one, Ned - they hired an actress to perform dialogue Gonzalez' brother wrote specially for the record.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 24 January 2005 10:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmmm... I've listened to this once now and I'm on second listen. I like it but I can never quite pinpoint what M83 are supposed to, like "be". Are those voice samples necessary? Are they good? Are they annoying and naff? Does it sound too much like GSYBE? Why does the music look nothing like the cover?

Better than the last album though.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 30 January 2005 21:54 (nineteen years ago) link

well... if the cover is that picture of the buildings at night, i think the music sounds a lot like that picture looks... though the font that m83 is written in is all wrong.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Sunday, 30 January 2005 22:41 (nineteen years ago) link

the music makes me think of crepuscular forests and night time creatures, not big cities.

Brilliant. Now I *really* like them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 January 2005 23:02 (nineteen years ago) link

maybe it's to do with the fact that the first time i listened to this album i was looking through the photo book _neon tigers_, which has peter bialobrzeski's crazily futuristic-but-modern looking photos of various asian (non-tokyo) metropolises (metropoli?)... and was then fairly surprised to see the cover photo a few weeks later.

i don't know though because bits of the album sound like the score to blade runner too, so...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 31 January 2005 01:13 (nineteen years ago) link

hmmm i have the opposite problem as pitchfork: i want more vangelis and less MBV. this album definitely has more journey but maybe even more MBV than last time around. anyway i was hoping i'd like this one more - i think some of the drum fills kind of kill some of the tracks for me.

but the 1st and 3rd track are 100% epic.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:06 (nineteen years ago) link

vahid (vahid), Monday, 31 January 2005 02:06 (nineteen years ago) link

they're sort of cool but crap. reminds me of mid-nineties hard techno.

the spoken word parts, that is.
