ok this is really weird because i literally just explained the viking thing to my partner about four hours ago (she picked the literal reading, ofc, and had trouble understanding the metaphor). it was probably the first time i had thought about this or talked about it in 10 years. and then i come home to find this thread revive!

I'm surprised no-one is offended at that podcast copying an entire thread to another medium. It reminded me of that event years ago where someone printed a bunch of threads in a book and caused a great fuss here.

if one could reduce this thread only to the posts posing arguments meant to argue in favor one's considered and sincerely held opinion, removing all tongue-in-cheek posts, posts simply attempting to amuse the ilx collective through some sort of clever wit, or posts on the meta-subject of the why anyone would bother to argue about the supposed subject of the thread, then I'd estimate the whole thing would be about 40 posts long and as interesting as a limp dishrag.

I was so confused at first, because it came on after something else and I wasn't paying attention. Then I notice that ILX is scrolling past on it's own, and it broke my brain for a moment.

Incidentally, the video-maker is otm throughout (both his defense of the literal interpretation and his charitable reconstruction of why the metaphor interpretation lands for some people.)

This is most likely non-canon, but I had this book called "The Ralph Wiggum Book." In it, there was a section that detailed a typical day for Ralph, in which Ms. Hoover puts him in time-out, where he literally dreams of being a Viking. Because of that, I've always considered the line to be interpreted literally.

jfc, this guy I’ve been hanging out with came over for dinner last night and then when he found out I hadn’t seen/didn’t recall “Lisa the Vegetarian” he insisted we watch it, and apparently it’s this episode, and when Ralph said this I paused it and was like “oh my god, this message board I post on had this whole black-blue/white-gold dress moment 10 years ago ab out this line, isn’t that nuts?” and he was like “wtf, Its OBVIOUSLY that he’s a pro at sleeping!” and I was completely dumbfounded
