Heard that brainiac Cohen decided not to hire Epstein. I presume Sandy is the sticking point.

I'm going on the record that this guy is going to be the Daniel Snyder of the MLB.

i thought it was more that epstein wasn’t interested? either way, not great

I have very low expectations about this search, and am expecting it to go poorly.

amazin

A report that the #Mets have put former #Pirates 1b Dorian Boyland on growing short list led to a pleasant conversation with Boyland who told me no contact with the NYM, no interest in the job. He said he is happy to run his car dealerships.

You have to hand it to the Mets. They found a worse owner than the Wilpons.

Hannibal Lecture (PBKR), Tuesday, 19 October 2021 11:50 (two years ago) link

You could just make these up now and it would be 100% believable. Like, how long before they do a ted lasso and try hiring an Australian cricket coach?!

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 19 October 2021 12:13 (two years ago) link

The Boyland rumor may have actually been made up, but as long as someone can get a lolmets out of it, it’s worth it.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 19 October 2021 14:17 (two years ago) link

The Mets have already been turned down by a handful of targets in their search for a new baseball operations head. Each of Theo Epstein, Billy Beane, David Stearns, Matt Arnold, Scott Harris and Brandon Gomes had been raised as potential candidates only to later be ruled out of consideration.

Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch can be added to that list, as Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports (Twitter link) that New York reached out to the Cards for permission to speak with him last week. Girsch, however, declined to pursue the opportunity, electing to remain in St. Louis instead.

girsch is pretty much a no name in st louis, for what it's worth. so good move to be turned down by him?

is this press (mlb trade rumors) right that the dynamic is these various candidates turning them down? if so, yikes

mookieproof, Wednesday, 24 November 2021 15:38 (two years ago) link

He's raging about all these external things and:

1. Sandy Alderson is still involved even though he hired three scumbags for managers/gms.
2. They still don't have a manager.
3. Farm system is still a disaster.

hocus pocus, alakazam (PBKR), Wednesday, 24 November 2021 15:49 (two years ago) link

He should probably be thankful Matz didn't give him a chance to outbid the Cards, that deal would've been even more lolmets embarrassing

, Wednesday, 24 November 2021 16:52 (two years ago) link

perhaps, even apart from being sandwiched between aldersons, the mets’ gm opening was so bad and hated because the billionaire owner is micromanaging back-end-of-rotation negotiations

Low threshold these days for what counts as news:

https://www.mlb.com/news/keith-hernandez-mets-jersey-retirement

With the new rule-of-Baines in place, I think it's almost a certainty that he'll eventually get into the HOF via one of the committees: 60.3 bWAR, his years as an announcer, famous Seinfeld episode (crucial to any serious HOF resume). I imagine his cocaine dalliance is long forgotten.

I think for at least the 7th year in a row, Mets may have had the greatest potential for both incredible feats and incredible failure. There has been a lot of failure to say the least, and even the good years (‘15, ‘16, ‘19) have been filled with so many rip-your-hair-out-of-your-head moments. Former GM Brodie Van Wagenen literally started throwing chairs at one time.

Appreciate a manager who has already dealt the NYC media nonsense before.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 25 April 2022 22:53 (one year ago) link

get ready for some jordan hicks. a guy who throws 100 mph sinkers, 91 mph sliders, doesn't strike out as many as you'd think, and is now trying to become a starting pitcher with only two pitches. note: he was a starter in the minors before getting promoted very quickly, and upon reaching the majors as a reliever he dropped from 4 pitches down to his current TWO (2). a "deep cut" storyline of the cardinals this year is whether he can bring back a 3rd pitch and get the game into the 5th or 6th inning (at some point this year - his goal for today should be a solid 4 innings), or if the ship has sailed

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 22:16 (one year ago) link

I feel I am already familiar with the Hicks saga due to you KM! I remember when he first came up. Turning him into a starter is an interesting angle, considering his past injury / closer issues. If Flaherty is still around, do you think they still try this out? LGM.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 23:16 (one year ago) link

If Flaherty is still healthy, this doesn't happen. It's interesting, though, what would have happened when the inevitable injuries occurred later in the season - if Flaherty goes down in mid-May, does Hicks suddenly get the 5th rotation spot after being in the late-bullpen the previous 2 months? i don't think so, but not sure. i'm glad he's getting the opportunity - both hicks and reyes were once thought of as starting pitchers before injuries and circumstances led them to the bullpen. they're both so injury prone, it's hard to imagine a long-term future for either one. but i'm loving this opportunity to see what hicks can do while his arms is still mythical

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 23:35 (one year ago) link

every time alex reyes comes back it's like obi wan kenobi's ghost version. it's like hey, i see you there for a minute, and i love you, but goodbye

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 23:37 (one year ago) link

it appears the 2022 hicks era is already over

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 00:36 (one year ago) link

saying that from a doomer perspective, but i'm just not accustomed to seeing hicks (or reyes) for more than a few weeks without total disaster

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 00:37 (one year ago) link

Yeah the phrase “season-ending injury” is always hovering around both of them.

Met batters have been averaging 1 HBP per game this month, and after each one Showalter’s glower power grows.

crazy to remember that strawb was on the 114-win “best ever” yankees in 1998. such a completely different era. i just looked it up and he hit 24 home runs that year. the next year, his last, he didn’t play much, but hit .327 with a 1.112 OPS.
