My two teenage kids have not even considered getting fb accounts, and I don't think anyone at their high school wants one. That can't be good for growth.

The death spiral dream sounds great, but a huge percentage of the world's population uses FB as the internet, full stop. Like, that's the only site they visit ever.

It does seem like the only reason young people use FB is to communicate with older generations.

Given the way things are going the next big thing will probably be Telegram 3.0 after it’s been assimilated into the TikTok “multiverse” or whatever.

The kids still like Instagram.

I was picking a friend up at the airport today and we only ever communicated over Messenger - thankfully fellow ILXor kate78 had an actual mobile number for her!

I couldn’t say what actual substantive difference there is between TikTok and Instagram, but it seems like most of the content on Instagram is reposted from either TikTok or Twitter. I know the young people don’t fuck with Twitter, it’s just for memeing. But unless there’s also close to a majority of content on TikTok which is reposted from Instagram, then I get the impression that TikTok is more popular with those on the front edge of the curve.

mine didn't, she just posts everything she eats, not sure why fb thinks I am interested as I scroll past all of them in a hopeless search for the posts from my actual friends, which it refuses to show me.

the only people I know who DON'T use WhatsApp are North Americans. entire governments in Asia and Africa are run on WhatsApp.

this morning, govt ministries here in Malaysia were scrambling to set up alternative chat groups on Telegram in case there's another outage.

i used it when I was in the Philippines, it was basically how i kept in contact with the local partner site there and arranged pick-ups.

Camaraderie, there's this thing where you click on three dots next to someone's name, and three of the options are literally:

- see fewer posts like this
- temporarily stop seeing posts
- stop seeing posts but stay friends

but if I actually engage with it then the battle is lost.

I wish insta had a fewer posts option. Some people post waaay too much. Only option is to mute them and then they’re kind of lost forever!

In the last two weeks, I've had three friend requests on my dormant account from girls I knew in junior high school. Keep in mind it was a small school, so we're talking about a pool of only 20-30 people.

I guess one of them friend-requested me first, and that made me pop up on the others? It's weird though. I would've been flattered 35 years ago, but now, no way. Not going to be a part of whatever algorhythm they've got buzzing up there.
