typo hell #10: i didn't think any of them really off badly (Karl Malone), Monday, 4 October 2021 18:04 (two years ago) link

hope they have a roundtable on whether Travistan is still a 0.0

Murgatroid, Monday, 4 October 2021 18:05 (two years ago) link

revisiting scores and reviews is a wonderful idea. but i hope they properly archive (and reference) the originals

maybe they'll replace the graphic they used for their Partie Traumatic review with a different graphic!

Murgatroid, Monday, 4 October 2021 18:09 (two years ago) link

I haven't looked yet. How close are 12 Rods to #1?

Evan, Monday, 4 October 2021 18:10 (two years ago) link

important to pitchfork

jazmine sullivan is also on the list even tho they plainly ignored her work until well after reality show, the first record they acknowledged, came out. the world of rock/'pop' criticism had to basically be begged by dev hynes (i think?) to even listen to that album, + still doesn't really acknowledge that plenty of the music she put out prior to their starting to care is just as essential

dyl, Monday, 4 October 2021 19:13 (two years ago) link

I don't really care about this list, but it seems clear they're using it to redefine themselves, same as they've been doing with the retroactive Sunday reviews (many of which are the source of the pullquotes for individual artist entries, as opposed to contemporaneous write-ups, which is telling).

juristic person (morrisp), Monday, 4 October 2021 19:25 (two years ago) link

It's kind of odd to be celebrating a 25th anniversary while asking people to forget the first 10 years or so

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 4 October 2021 19:52 (two years ago) link

Well, some of those artists are there. TBH, I think they could have leaned even harder into later stuff. I don't really think of Boredoms and YLT as acts "who released all – or at least the bulk of – their defining work within the last 25 years," but seems they were sort of grandfathered in based on a few respected late-'90s releases.

juristic person (morrisp), Monday, 4 October 2021 19:58 (two years ago) link

(or the opposite of "grandfathered" – grandchilded?)

justice for 12 rods

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 4 October 2021 20:03 (two years ago) link

i don't really understand this list because i would insist trail of dead be included

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 4 October 2021 20:08 (two years ago) link

the arc of the source tags -> worlds apart reviews/scores so perfectly crystallizes early pfork for me, idk, i guess they wanted to write about a bunch of artists they actually liked tho

nothing but some scant news articles before 2019 for Aaliyah one of the most important artists of the last 25 years of Pitchfork

how many of the 200 artists will have text from this feature or placement onto the feature itself spammed into their wikipedia articles immediately

Yeah but the RIYL: Aaliyah reviews have gone back at least ten years

trail of dead are not on this list? bad list.

I'm all for revisionism and trying to pass personal for authoritative and authoritative for personal
That's still a pretty big schism between the icons and the rest. When did indie die again ?
Otherwise I can't comment, I've never really known what albums I was listening to because P4K had endorsed them and where I was showing fabulous independence of taste. I can imagine the "serpent-eating-its-tail" problem for current P4K staff.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 5 October 2021 07:27 (two years ago) link

I was initially annoyed by the idea of an alphabetical list of "important artists" with no organizing principle other than existing over the last 25 years, however, if I was 14 or 15, this would a pretty solid roadmap for exploring popular music since the 90s. I don't mind the revisionism at all and think it would be pretty silly if this was just a summary of what critics who wrote for pitchfork 20 years ago thought was good then, but maybe that's not what you all are suggesting?

Indexed, Tuesday, 5 October 2021 13:32 (two years ago) link

i think i was confused earlier bc this is just a list of important artists and has little if anything to do with pfork's coverage of them

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 13:45 (two years ago) link

lol deej will be happy with some Chief Keef retroactive justice!

The Grimes downgrade is lol, but the Big Boi one is not tho.

It’s tied in with p4k’s 25th anniversary but has little to do with the kind of music coverage that made them rise to prominence.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 14:37 (two years ago) link

Aww. I was really hoping for a downgrade of the score for Tobias Jesso Jr's Goon. That or Chance's Coloring Book.

Chairlift: Moth (2016)
7.6 → 8.5

honestly unsure what score i originally pitched for this record, but fun to see, especially given how many ppl here fucking hate it

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 14:47 (two years ago) link

the grimes downgrade is stupid af but i guess she deserves it

Poppy: I Disagree (2020)
6.5 → 10

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 October 2021 14:50 (two years ago) link

I did not expect Chairlift to mean that much to them.

these score revisions seem more like each writer's opinion than an official decree from on high about a record's quality
