"I Started Something..." is a fabulous karaoke jam, and I dig "Stop Me..." and "I Won't Share You." That's that.

No love for "Death of a Disco Dancer'?

Bummed and astounded to learn that there are thirty of these

& I enjoy morrissey & the smiths’s dozen good songs as much as anyone

considering that he ranked his more recent albums highest in a desperate attempt to get me to listen to them.

nice try moz, you racist fuck lol

but seriously, how disappointing.

the only songs on strangways I like are “stop me” and “I won’t share you”, the rest is boring as fuck

brimstead, Saturday, 2 October 2021 17:06 (two years ago) link

Girlfriend in a Coma is one of The Smiths' loveliest songs, and I Won't Share You is a great parting shot. It's a good album, but I would take the other studio albums and HoH over it.

Neil S, Saturday, 2 October 2021 18:46 (two years ago) link

Quite pleased that my favourite Smiths album is "The Smiths"

ha yeah I was like, huh, there's like 10 albums here I've either never even heard of or haven't heard, then I was like and yeah that's how that's going to stay

bovarism, Saturday, 2 October 2021 21:48 (two years ago) link

three months pass...

I was listening to some album on Spotify (the Cure, I think) and when it was over the service popped into related shuffle mode. So first up was JAMC's "April Skies," which was nice, and then it was "Everyday Is Like Sunday," and swear to god, my first reaction was, aw, this is a really nice song, it's a shame about all his bullshit, but I guess it's still sad that Morrissey's dead, because he did sing a lot of songs I like. And then it struck me that, wait a minute, he's actually not dead. He's just *functionally* dead.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 January 2022 00:18 (two years ago) link

looking forward to seeing him at Cruel World in May.

fuck Morrissey with a pitchfork

castanuts (DJP), Monday, 24 January 2022 01:43 (two years ago) link

josh proposes an interesting thought tho: what will be the collective response when he does die?

i know i'll be sad. but mostly because of what he became, so not really that different from now.

i still do like his old records. especially the stuff with vini reilly.

He was always like this, though. See: Panic

castanuts (DJP), Monday, 24 January 2022 02:35 (two years ago) link

enh yeah i guess, but at least he's owning on it that record: "the music they play says nothing to me about my life."

(also one of the worst smiths songs, btw)

"Bengali in Platforms" is on his first record with Reilly. It's not a question of becoming. (I still like the Smiths btw!)

The sensual shock (Sund4r), Monday, 24 January 2022 02:48 (two years ago) link

yeah that's the thing. 'reggae is vile,' panic, bengali...it was always right there.

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 24 January 2022 03:13 (two years ago) link

he's always been problematic and a shitty person. to deny that he became more so with age is purposely dense.

also adding the smiths to my list of "canon bands that are actually super boring and overrated and only have like two good songs"

(tried to revisit strangeways this past week after it came up in the controp thread and jesus christ it's boring)

Austin, have you read the 1986 Melody Maker interviewed linked here as "Morrissey discusses the black pop conspiracy and celibacy"?: https://mrmorrissey.tripod.com/interv/index.html

Who are you calling "purposely dense", because it looks like that's directed towards the people who noticed Morrissey's racism before you did

castanuts (DJP), Monday, 24 January 2022 17:05 (two years ago) link

damn that interview is terrible, i've seen those quote on their own before here and there but not the actual piece. people usually say "well they were taken out of context" but in this case i think they are even worse in context

My favorite thing about the interview is that the interviewer a couple of times is like "are you sure you don't want to take this less-racist lifeline I'm trying to throw you" and Morrissey is all "NOPE"

lol at the idea that the co-author of "There is a Light..." thinks Black pop emphasizes "escapism" or fantasy or whatever

Wish a ten ton truck would crash into him

Most indie-pop purists of that era got over that kind of hardline rejection of chart pop via the dance music of the late 80s or dare I say the Britpop scene a couple of years later. But Morrisey's music taste seems stuck in the same place forever. I walked past a venue where he was playing a couple of years ago and they were actually selling T-Rex and New York Dolls vinyl at the merchandise stall.

everything, Monday, 24 January 2022 23:18 (two years ago) link

as far as I can tell he only likes the things he liked when he was a teenager

Worse than that...

At Morrissey gigs, on the merch stand, you can buy albums like Aladdin Sane by David Bowie....signed by Morrissey....for $300.

No way Morrissey watches The Simpsons he'll still be watching betamax copies of Nearest & Dearest and the Jimmy Clitheroe Show.

Dear @officialmoz . An ‘open letter’ hasn’t really been a thing since 1953, It’s all ‘social media’ now. Even Donald J Trump had that one down. Also, this fake news business…a bit 2021 yeah ?#makingindiegreatagain

The stuff about reggae in that 1986 MM interview up there is unhinged; what the hell had been listening to?

Morrissey's 'letter' seems to me the single worst thing he's ever done.

A bit disappointed to see, here, that Marr has replied. It should be beneath him. He's always been better at serenity.
