xxpost Does Patrick Walker actually agree with Warning being doom metal? I'm on the fence. The new LLNN is really good.

Yeahhh it is, I feel like they're expanding their sound a bit but it's still crushing.

New Succumb is really good too, but only if you like riffs flying at your face for 34 and a half minutes.

K.K.'s Priest album is fun so far, but not as good as JP's Firepower (at least what i've heard so far). KK's personality comes across more in lengthy instrumental breaks rather than the shell of the song itself.

vocalist is Ripper Owens, lol, so for all intents in purposes I guess this is a second Judas Priest. he sounds good here though because for once he's not actively trying to sing like a predecessor like he had to in JP and Iced Earth. his falsetto is still really powerful.

I am only a few songs into the Body/Big|Brave collab.

Sounds like Godspeed You! Black Emperor meets Jaye Jayle with a female vocalist (haven't heard any Chip King screeches yet).

Naturally one would expect fantastic guitar work on an album featuring KK Downing.

sounding a bit like katatonia's brave murder day songwriting at discouraged ones (mid-)tempos to me. the way the soaring guitars and keys bounce of each other also bringing blut aus nord's memoria vetusta ii (a personal favorite).

a cryptic message on their fb page seems to indicate that this project has recently come to a stop. too bad but there are still quite a few records in the back catalog that I still haven't even heard. and the ones that I have are of comparable quality. then there's the guitarist's other releases from this year...

love the body big/brave so much. as mentioned above, not going with any Chip King screeches was a cool show of restraint that I think this album really benefits from

Listening to the new Trivium album, which is called In the Court of the Dragon and has this cover art:

Their current drummer, Alex Bent, used to be in Battlecross and Brain Drill, and he's really lit a fire under them on their last two albums and this one. They're doing some of their most aggressive material with him, though it's still got big melodic choruses 'cause Matt Heafy's a giant dork. Anyway, if you're a fan, this is just as good as the album they put out last year, which I liked a lot.

Scott Koenig died from COVID. I knew him back when he was still in New York and I was an up and coming metal journo type. He was always really nice to me back in the day and I never heard a bad word about him. Legend has it that he turned Rick Rubin onto Slayer (and Trouble) and he also managed Fear Factory and Biohazard along the way. Terrible loss.

Superdigging the new Fluisteraars. It's rough and raw but its a lot more than that as well. Love the variations in vocals. The little instrumental flourishes, the stretched out guitar parts.

Grand Cadaver are a Swedish death metal act fronted by Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity. All the other dudes have been in other bands, too, but I've never heard of any of them. Anyway, their debut album Into the Maw of Death is out this week and it sounds like...Swedish death metal. Grinding, fast, plenty of guitar distortion.

Probably stupid question, but I had a new 1914 track come up on Spotify yesterday and kind of dug it. But that whole war metal thing from that area of the world can attract some, uh, more right leaning elements. Basically, is 1914 fashy? Or just big into World War I?

They have an album called Für Kaiser, Volk und Vaterland. I'd steer clear.

Ha missed that particular EP. Kinda thought the Napalm co-sign might indicate they weren't really, but that title says a lot.

After a few minutes of research, I'm provisionally concluding that Dmytro Kumar of 1914 is a WWI scholar, not a nazi.

xpost I'm always worried about stuff like that, especially with metal. There was a time I was listening to a bunch of Opeth and I suddenly got scared. Like, what if Akerfeldt was a far right nut? But I asked a friend of a friend of his and he assured me he's a cool dude and it made me feel a lot better, as did interviews I've subsequently read.

Any thoughts on the Cradle of Filth that came out last week?

I have not been able to spend quality time with it but I find the band to be fun usually.

Got kinda burned out on them tbh, haven't checked in in awhile.

Excited to get the new Mastodon today, also the new Kayo Dot is supposed to be amazing (but not sure just how "metal" the new one might be yet).

Hyperdontia's second album Hideous Entity comes out November 12 and for the most part it's extremely pounding old school death metal (think Incantation), but as the album goes on some subtle prog-death bits pop up and it works really well. Wes Benscoter cover art, too!

I didn't like everything on the new Cradle of Filth equally, but the high points seemed high enough to me to be pretty happy with it.

I liked the Neige statement. Alcest is the only band I can think of who I bought records by and paid to see in concert that ended up having such close ties to that stuff, so I'm relieved to see such a strong statement (even though I am not really a fan anymore).

I like how Benscoter seems to have tried to subtly insert as many teeth as he could into that Hyperdontia cover.
