the evergreens rule out texas i think. could be canada. it does look interior / plains to me based on the dryish lawn and dusty light.

i don't think it's north america tbh, something about the buildings

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Friday, 24 September 2021 14:29 (two years ago) link

they look like apartment blocks? in north american cities they would be office buildings clustered around a downtown. i think russia or eastern bloc is likely, maybe inland china.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Friday, 24 September 2021 14:31 (two years ago) link

I can't unsee Russia now anyway

What is anyone seeing on the bottom right poster where there are four? I'm kind of seeing a cartoon type character in a top hat but it could be an optical illusion

Who wants another pic?

Yeah, go for it

posters on pillar + cared-for grass + no white paint on base of tree indicates to me that this is not China, btw.

Roof tiles look Japanese.

nickn, Friday, 24 September 2021 20:32 (two years ago) link

What is the deal with trees with white paint on them in some countries?

Porking level G4 (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 25 September 2021 00:54 (two years ago) link

Still thinking somewhere in Russia

cherry blossom, Saturday, 25 September 2021 02:17 (two years ago) link

it all feels too clean and modern for Russia, I think - Canada?

StanM, Saturday, 25 September 2021 04:26 (two years ago) link

Don't know exactly why but I am getting vibes of Perth in Western Australia

The white paint protects the trunks from the sun.

nickn, Saturday, 25 September 2021 05:25 (two years ago) link

How wide is that river and is the long burgundy thing on the other bank some kind of ship?

Russian cities have form for being on one side of a river with nature on the other.

cherry blossom, Saturday, 25 September 2021 06:54 (two years ago) link

I'm not quite sure what to make of the cabin-on-stilts. Why is it so unreachable? Is that a thing? If the front door is on the right, it's not opening out to anything?

StanM, Saturday, 25 September 2021 17:06 (two years ago) link

I'm drawing a blank! I don't really have enough confidence in my hunch. The figure in the poster looks incredibly familiar but then I look again and its an indistinct blob

Let's have another one then

Should've cropped that

hahaha what is that ski jump thing in the middle

a (waterface), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 11:57 (two years ago) link

I was wondering about that too, there's also no blue line which has me at sixes and sevens, unless the ski jump thing is obscuring it

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 12:02 (two years ago) link

white dot to make up for it

That arch bridge looks big enough to be listed on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_arch_bridge_spans

Novosibirsk

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 12:42 (two years ago) link

I was actually looking at this photo on Saturday but three clicks away so close!

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 12:48 (two years ago) link

Well done, was it the bridge? Turns out it is on nashwan's list at number 32, the bugrinsky bridge

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 28 September 2021 12:51 (two years ago) link

well done.

there's something really eerie about that deck on the hotel.

kind of dying to know what the ski jump is all about

No, I just went back to my hunch cities (Omsk, Novosibirsk, Khabarovsk, Irkutsk, Yekaterinburg) to look for the new view. I was already pretty set on it being Russia, and most likely east of the Urals. Landed on an aerial in Novosibirsk and became more convinced that was the river, span around and saw the ski jump thing

I'd already looked at the dot next to the river hotel on Friday, but was looking at the main building not the weird cabin.

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 13:00 (two years ago) link

I was about to start mooching around Novosibirsk based on the bridge having initially thought it looked too picturesque. Interesting that there's only one bridge like that (at least that scale) in the entire country.

looks like it might actually be a ski jump just waiting for some snow:

French/english calender, plug socket looks european, could be a burgundy/eu passport behind the juice cup with a distinctive logo (though burgundy is not eu exclusive), (A?)TM sign in the background.

ledge, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 08:30 (two years ago) link

Just to speculate wildly and contradict the above, the calendar says July, the clock on one of the computers says 12 something, the sunlight is coming straight through the window so the sun is low - somewhere in the southern temperate zone?

ledge, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 08:43 (two years ago) link

I keep thinking that's a bottle of vodka on the desk behind the mousemat.

nashwan, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 08:49 (two years ago) link

I think the sun is just reflected in an opposite window, not low in the sky.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 09:21 (two years ago) link

Nobody loves a stamp like the former Soviet Union. The poster in the back right might say Ев. I can’t tell whether the partially blocked sign says TM or ГМ.

It looks like there are a couple of purple passports on the desk, perhaps suggesting Russia, Mongolia or Uzbekistan, if the signs are in Cyrillic.

The books are either round an unusual way or possibly for a language that reads right to left. If it was just one, I’d think it might be a Quran.

I’m leaning towards Baku, for no justifiable reason.

possible, if the window is at an angle.

ledge, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 09:58 (two years ago) link

Does the partially blocked sign say ATM? Otherwise I've got nothing here, think I'll be sitting back and watching this one develop

ignore the blue line (or something), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 10:15 (two years ago) link

Is that an oil refinery or a port on the calendar?

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 10:28 (two years ago) link

Pretty sure it's a port with those cranes

ignore the blue line (or something), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 10:33 (two years ago) link

ATM seems probable, the small sign beneath could be a hand holding a debet/credit card.

The most visible monitor is ThinkCentre brand, which hardly helps much. Was wondering whether the keyboard looked more QWERTY or AZERTY, but can't really tell.
