This is especially terrible since it was such a nail-biter, and she was the deciding vote.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 24 September 2021 15:26 (two years ago) link

nothing says "breaking the fourth wall" like an unprincipled career politician abstaining on a vote for the sake of their own career ambitions and then doing a tearful performance to show how bad it made them feel. There is probably a Dril post for this but I can't be arsed digging it up.

calzino, Friday, 24 September 2021 20:21 (two years ago) link

I guess you won't be voting for her any time soon, then.

Aimless won't be voting for her either, of course.

I just figure the snarky should be snarked at from time to time. On principle.

I will never vote for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 24 September 2021 21:04 (two years ago) link

But just for balance, I will also never vote for Marjorie Taylor Greene.

why is criticising putatively left politicians considered snark on US pol threads? When they consistently seem extremely full of shit and useless for the masses are you supposed to keep saying what a good job they are doing?

calzino, Friday, 24 September 2021 21:44 (two years ago) link

why is criticising putatively left politicians considered snark

You seem surprised at the word. According to several dictionaries snark is "an attitude or expression of mocking irreverence and sarcasm." There's plenty of that to go around on ilx political threads and I freely state I do it myself with great pleasure at times. It would be silly of any of us to deny that (e.g. quote above).

So go right ahead and dish it out as much as you please. Just don't expect your own invariably snarkily-phrased political opinions to be received in polite silence or by choruses of hosannas. Even the Canadians around here know better than to expect that.

this seems about right, no idea how "the left" would have processed President Bernie greenlighting drone strikes but it would have been ugly one way or another

just don't stan, celebrate, or be a Fan of any ejected official. at most grant them grudging yet fleeting respect when they vote 'no' on the America Freedom Plan For Flags And Child/Puppy Dronestrikes, anything beyond that is embarrassing

idgi is she saying she would get death threats for voting no or yes. is a conversation of understanding when you vote no instead of present? you didn't have time to vote no?

certified juice therapist (harbl), Friday, 24 September 2021 22:39 (two years ago) link

I doubt I have much in common with @two5five but what they say is completely right -- the psychic merging of political culture with fan culture (and election discourse with sports discourse) is completely awful -- politicians aren't stars to be worshiped, they're people with jobs they can be good at or bad and we are, at least nominally, their employers.

yeah she could have written the same essay if she voted no because it has tons of reasons for voting no. weird!

certified juice therapist (harbl), Friday, 24 September 2021 22:59 (two years ago) link

The statement would make sense if she was explaining why she voted present instead of yes.

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 24 September 2021 23:10 (two years ago) link

then it makes sense. she first voted 'no', then changed her vote to 'present' before the tally was made final.

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 24 September 2021 23:54 (two years ago) link

To those who asked me to quell the volatility of this moment in our community, which constituted the majority of constituent feedback our office received

Is this the argument for not voting 'No'? It's confusing because immediately before she's talking about feedback received after the vote.

Three fucking pages of it

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 25 September 2021 14:31 (two years ago) link

I'm open to learning whatever I don't understand about this, but I thought the statement was fine? As an extremely loose and off the cuff take, she's to the left of some of her constituents and walks a certain line. If you go to your people and they say, as our representative you should do (X), isn't it your job to represent them at the end of the day? If you believe they're wrong, you can undertake and/or support organizing & community education to change their understanding of the issue, which is a longer term project.

Also call your representatives because they respond to who they hear from.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Saturday, 25 September 2021 15:07 (two years ago) link

isn't it your job to represent them at the end of the day

No? We don't let that excuse Republican politicians representing their reactionary constituents.

papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 25 September 2021 15:57 (two years ago) link

Uhh my understanding is that reactionary-friendly GOPers are there because, absent gerrymandering and voter suppression, which is, again, about mobilizing *people*, their voters elected them to do reactionary things.

One metaphor I heard from an organizer was: Elected officials are like balloons on a string, tied to a rock on the ground. You can only move the balloon so far without moving the rock, ie, the voters/constituents.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Saturday, 25 September 2021 16:16 (two years ago) link

Reactionary Republicans are there because a large chunk of the country is reactionary, without voter suppression and gerrymandering the number would only be marginally different. Their voters elect them to do reactionary things but that's what I'm saying - I've yet to encounter the progressive who thinks Greg Abbott is fine because his voters really wanted that abortion ban, he's just doing what his constituents demand.

A realpolitik argument that Cortez and Bowman had no choice but to make the chickenshit votes they did is extremely questionable and not really a response to expressions of disappointment and disdain that they made those votes.

papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 25 September 2021 16:35 (two years ago) link

it’s becoming clearer and clearer to me that officials elected to office should just do whatever milo wants them to do
