if i had made the list on jan 1 2000 it woulda looked like this i think:

snoop – doggy dogg world
kurupt – we can freak it
tony tone toni – lets get down (ft dj quik)
too short – gettin it
naughty by nature – feel me flow
rbl posse – dont give me no bammer
wu – triumph
outkast – ATLiens
master p – burbons and lacs
3 6 mafia – late nite tip
e-40 – sprinkle me
2pac – how do you want it

think it would look a little different now but these would all easily be in my top 30 or so.

There does seem to be a certain lack of hip hop among selections here overall. I think of the mid-90s as a bit of a slump for hip hop and I wonder if we polled the noughties if more hip hop would be represented.

(Voodoo chili I was gonna ask if the inclusion of Luniz means you’re from the Bay — it seems like a local fave. Personally I have to rep the remix, especially now since Shock G is on it. But anyway you scratched it from your list so disregard.)

But I bet that guy who picked Tumthumping regrets it by now. The guy who picked Porno For Pyros too. <wink>

i'm a big hip hop head but i like so many genres I didn't even notice I had left hip hop out until after i submitted.

need to make a hip hop specific one

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 18:14 (two years ago) link

Right understandable.

I think when I made my list I was very consciously picking representatives of major genres. It looks all wrong now though and I’m not really sure exactly how. 11 years ago wow.

" I think of the mid-90s as a bit of a slump for hip hop"

I think of 92-96 to be the pinnacle of hip hop

yah granny otm. 93-98 is my personal golden age. i listened to a lot of other stuff but hip hop dominated my listening for the most part. a top 100 would include some grunge, punk, alt rock and lots of r&b.

a talented ‘Rebel’ with Balls (Spottie), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 18:35 (two years ago) link

I'm surprised how little 'Pac has been listed here. Hugely iconic 90s artist. Is it that his persona and celebrity overshadows his actual music??

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 18:42 (two years ago) link

Like I probably would've forgotten to list a song of his if not for noticing his absence in others' lists.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 18:44 (two years ago) link

he seems to have fallen out of favor a bit over the years

a talented ‘Rebel’ with Balls (Spottie), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 18:45 (two years ago) link

Maybe y’all are right. Mostly it’s that I wasn’t listening to much hip hop from ‘95-‘00 other than Pac and J5 tbh. I was out of the loop on Nas, Outkast, Biggie, E-40…the list could go on. (I was going to a lot of great drum and bass parties all over the US tho.)

Anyway that leads to me figuring out what’s wrong with my list — no Outkast. For now I’ll with Two Dope Boyz (In A Cadillac), seems like their proper anthem. And a deep fucking groove with massive flows riding on top of course. Dungeon Family surely one of the top production teams of the 90s in terms of influence.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 18:48 (two years ago) link

yah you could make an organized noize top ten list from the 90s that would rival any list here.

a talented ‘Rebel’ with Balls (Spottie), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 18:50 (two years ago) link

top ten of a decade is just a cruel exercise really.

a talented ‘Rebel’ with Balls (Spottie), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 18:50 (two years ago) link

Right I meant Organized Noise thanks.

And I see I left Tupac out too, I only listed that Black Star remix. Pete Rock is another top 90s producer, except his influence was maybe more limited. But that remix also has one of Black Thought’s greatest guest verses too, it’s A+

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 18:53 (two years ago) link

1. Tricky - Hell Is Round the Corner
2. Slowdive - Waves
3. Fugazi - Reclamation
4. The Sundays - Goodbye
5. Eric B. & Rakim - Juice (Know the Ledge) Main Mix
6. Wu Tang Clan - Wu Banga 101
7. Underworld - Dark And Long - Dark Train
8. The Afghan Whigs - Summer's Kiss
9. Kyuss - 50 Million Year Trip
10. Cat Power - Colors and the Kids

nate woolls, Thursday, 23 September 2021 03:25 (two years ago) link

I tried to:
- include a broad range of genres that feel "1990s" to me (although lacking latin, african and asian music so let's call it "western")
- hit singles or at least somewhat canonical genre classics
- worldwide range but no songs that were just local hits (i.e. no finnish rap, american country, german schlager, dutch gabber etc)

Stardust Music Sounds Better With You (1998)
Warren G & Nate Dogg Regulate (1994)
Alice In Chains Would? (1992)
Solar Quest Acid Air Raid (George's All Nighter) (1994)
Entombed Left Hand Path (1990)
Jaydee Plastic Dreams (Original Long Version) (1992)
dEUS Suds & Soda (1994)
Biosphere Baby Interphase (1994)
Janet Jackson Got 'Till It's Gone (1997)
LTJ Bukem Horizons(1995)
Portishead Sour Times (1994)

Siegbran, Thursday, 23 September 2021 07:47 (two years ago) link

Biosphere, interesting! That’s one I wasn’t familiar with — I’m just listening on headphones but it sounds like the sub bass is almost heavy enough for garage?

Overall that’s half songs I would pick, but I haven’t even heard of much of the rest. (For those similarly in the dark, it seems Deus is some kind of Belgian indie metal [?], Entombed is Swedish death metal, and the Solar Quest sounds like some pretty basic acid techno. Respect.)

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 23 September 2021 09:06 (two years ago) link

But I can definitely remember my indie friends at the time making fun of me for liking Warren G.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 23 September 2021 09:07 (two years ago) link

dEUS were a Belgian indie rock band, pretty high profile I thought?

Regulate is a bit of a boring choice but most of the other rap songs I'd pick were already mentioned a lot in this thread.

Siegbran, Thursday, 23 September 2021 09:11 (two years ago) link

I don’t know, most of my knowledge of indie rock is pretty regional. I wasn’t closely following European indie at the time that’s for sure.

I think Regulate is pretty great really, maybe not the greatest but definitely an excellent production. The lyrics are ok.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 23 September 2021 09:19 (two years ago) link

dEUS was a great band, on the arty end of the indie/alt rock spectrum but still with enough hooks to be staples of alt-rock radio playlists.

Those solo Wu-Tang joins came out in the mid '90s iirc, and, well does 1994 count as mid '90s? A couple of classics that year....

Ha, I was thinking about doing one for the 00's, which for me is an overlooked decade sandwiched between the 90s and 10s which I consider almost equally amazing decades for music.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Thursday, 23 September 2021 18:58 (two years ago) link

yo "Bugs" is sick, gtfo

This feels about right:
1. Ghost Town DJs "My Boo"
2. SWV "Right Here (Human Nature)"
3. Aaliyah "One In A Million"
4. Notorious BIG "Juicy"
5. The Pharcyde "Passin' Me By"
6. Radiohead "Let Down"
7. Pavement "Grounded"
8. Adina Howard "Freak Like Me"
9. Blur "Coffee + TV"
10. Teenage Fanclub "Everything Flows"

"Electric Relaxation" or Dino Jr's "Out There" should probably be in there but idk what to cut.

Looks not very well aligned with my top 90s scrobbles since 2014:
1. Heatmiser "You Gotta Move"
2. Hum "Comin' Home"
3. Failure "Undone"
4. Floor "Chelsea/Pigs"
5. Tony Toni Tone "Feels Good"
6. Shudder To Think "Earthquakes Come Home"
7. The Pharcyde "Passin' Me By"
8. Ween "Baby Bitch"
9. A Tribe Called Quest "Electric Relaxation"
10. Cannibal Corpse "Sentenced To Burn"
