Morris Perry, one of the great tough guy British TV actors of the 60s and 70s, with a well-deserved lead in Special Branch.

my heart stopped for a second there

frogbs, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 21:41 (two years ago) link

the doc on Melvin that his son made is the most narcissistic movie I have ever seen. the guy's big contribution to culture was releasing a blaxploitation movie a few months before gordon parks made the first GOOD blaxploitation movie.

What did you think I meant?

I, the Jukebox Jury (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 22:18 (two years ago) link

Just saw Elvis Costello as the first two words in a post on the obituary thread that’s all

frogbs, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 22:24 (two years ago) link

Always thought it was weird that Costello has acted as himself in films and television so many times. And not just quick appearances, like as a character in the story.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 23 September 2021 11:37 (two years ago) link

His IMDB page is missing Treme.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 23 September 2021 11:38 (two years ago) link

I think there was a film where he tried to act as someone else once and was so bad he was never asked again.

Are You Still in Love With Me, Klas-Göran? (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 September 2021 11:58 (two years ago) link

He's got a bunch of credits as other characters, half of it is voice acting for animation

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 23 September 2021 12:06 (two years ago) link

He does get punched by Keith Allen in a Comic Strip Presents.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 23 September 2021 12:16 (two years ago) link

Must look out for that episode

The Bullshitters: Roll Out The Gunbarrel, I believe.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 23 September 2021 12:27 (two years ago) link

was The Bulshitters a pisstake out of The Professionals?

calzino, Thursday, 23 September 2021 12:29 (two years ago) link

Not a very funny one if memory serves

a flange is gonna come (Matt #2), Thursday, 23 September 2021 12:37 (two years ago) link

my personal fave at the time was Mr Jolly Lives Next Door, there was a lot of not very good ones though.

calzino, Thursday, 23 September 2021 12:41 (two years ago) link

Bullshitters: yeah, Professionals spoof, memorable for Richardson and Allen charging around London in leather coats, underpants and boots. Coltrane in Gordon Jackson role. Costello is some sort of talent scout who tries to sign one of them up after karaoke in a pub.

Anyway, Elvis Costello is NOT dead, as far as we know.

RIP ROBERTO ROENA 1940-2021 Roberto Roena was a Puerto Rican salsa music percussionist, orchestra leader, and dancer. Was in El Gran Combo and had his own band Su Apollo Sound who had records on Fania

curmudgeon, Friday, 24 September 2021 17:15 (two years ago) link

I don't know how many Apollo Sound albums there were, but I've heard the first ten and there's not a bad one in the bunch. I think I heard #6 first, so anyone who's interested could try that as a starting point.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 24 September 2021 17:29 (two years ago) link

And now Pee Wee Ellis, also 81.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 24 September 2021 17:41 (two years ago) link

Aw. But that at least reminds me to read Fred Wesley's book, which is sitting right over there.

that obit's from 2015 tho

mark s, Saturday, 25 September 2021 12:30 (two years ago) link

Different person who's just died, music business agent. I didn't know there was another Steve Strange.

Dan Worsley, Saturday, 25 September 2021 12:32 (two years ago) link

That is strange. No Wikipedia entry for the newly late one so not sure if he ended up with the same name by birth or decision.

groovypanda, Saturday, 25 September 2021 12:40 (two years ago) link

he seemed to have made a big impression on lots of appalling rock bands

calzino, Saturday, 25 September 2021 12:43 (two years ago) link

he should have been called Steve Normal

sax player in Spandau 🎷

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 25 September 2021 14:36 (two years ago) link

Initially read that as 'sex player in Spandau' which sounds perfectly accurate.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 25 September 2021 16:14 (two years ago) link

Thought Spandau prison was closed after Rudolf Hess died. Seems inhumane to put a man there just for playing sax.

Porking level G4 (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 25 September 2021 18:08 (two years ago) link

We just lost another bandmate & legend, Mr. Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis. He was a member of James Brown's band in the 60s, recording many of Brown's recordings "Cold Sweat", "Say It Loud ". He also worked with Van Morrison. A silent genius & brilliant arrangements.🙏Prayers to Family! pic.twitter.com/1AP7iVYbyq

RIP Peewee. He used to play monthly at a Bristol jazz club below my old flat, it was a real treat to hear him wailing through the floor.
