and it as nothing to do with him being a christian. definitely not

i haven't seen a player score from second base on a sac fly before, but harrison bader did it tonight. but what's crazy is it wasn't even close, and there wasn't even an error or anything. lorenzo cain caught a fly ball at the wall and fell to the ground doing it, true, but he quickly flipped the ball to the RF, who made a perfect throw to the cutoff man. but by then it was already too late to even merit a throw to home.

cool!

the other night somebody, i can't remember who - kike hernandez maybe? - tried to tag from FIRST to second on a deep fly to center and he would have made it if he'd stayed on the bag. respect the hustle.

gotta say I'm pretty unsettled by the St. Louis Cardinals once again getting hot right as the season ends

frogbs, Thursday, 23 September 2021 13:37 (two years ago) link

almost unfair how they loaded up at the deadline by acquiring . . . jon lester and j.a. happ

the other 3 cardinals were also in the infield at this point

Marcus Semien needs another double for 40 HR/40 doubles. That was a big deal when Willie Stargell did it in 1973--it had already been done ~ten times, but not for a while. Semien will be about the 40th guy to do it (or at least the 40th season; a few guys, like Pujols, have done it more than once). The great Chris Davis had 50 HR/40 doubles in 2013.

clemenza, Sunday, 26 September 2021 00:45 (two years ago) link

semien and bo have also, i believe, set the homer record for combined middle infielders

mookieproof, Sunday, 26 September 2021 00:50 (two years ago) link

78 HR...I would have thought something more than that during the PED era.

Ohtani just tripled for the second time today

Cardinals may never lose again

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 02:58 (two years ago) link

they're gonna lose in the wildcard game and suddenly that will be that

mookieproof, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 03:28 (two years ago) link

lol that would be so insane.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 07:54 (two years ago) link

though maybe not any more insane than the dodgers having a 100-win season and going one and done.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 07:57 (two years ago) link

Honestly they’ll win the WC then lose the division series

typo hell #6: i really don't much at all (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 14:24 (two years ago) link

One absolutely bonkers thing I noticed today - this season could very well end with no hitters over 7 fWAR. Going all the way back to 1884 when the NL expanded beyond 112 games, I can only find 2 seasons where that happened, 1900 and 1918. Didn't even happen in the strike seasons. Most seasons it doesn't come remotely close to happening.

, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 18:42 (two years ago) link

Obviously there were a lot of injuries this year but this is extreme

, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 18:44 (two years ago) link

er expanded to 112 games, not beyond

, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 18:44 (two years ago) link

what the fuck Devin

Devin Williams is being placed on the 10-day IL with a fractured right hand. He told us he had too much to drink after Sunday’s celebration, got upset about something and punched a wall with his pitching hand. He will need surgery.

Didn’t this happen to a Braves pitcher this year too

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 20:27 (two years ago) link

happened to alex reyes in 2019

not sure "happened to" is right, but

typo hell #6: i really don't much at all (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 20:33 (two years ago) link

You're thinking of Huascar Ynoa, who at least had the decency to punch something after a bad game

, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 20:35 (two years ago) link

Brewers have weird luck with that sort of thing. Grienke missed his first month because of a pickup basketball game during Spring Training. Lucroy dropped a suitcase on his hand. Chris Narveson cut one of his fingers open trying to re-lace a glove. JJ Hardy hurt his hand in a walkoff celebration. If I recall correctly we also had a guy drop a bowling ball on his foot

frogbs, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 20:37 (two years ago) link

That is excessively dumb

the cardinals will lose tonight

well yeah, they're all hungover

, Thursday, 30 September 2021 01:34 (two years ago) link

yeah, even the announcers were like "things are a little fuzzy today, haha!" and it's the b-team today for sure

typo hell #6: i really don't much at all (Karl Malone), Thursday, 30 September 2021 01:35 (two years ago) link

i'm sure they'll still find a way to pull this off. cardinals devil magic never sleeps

keeping it real tonight in the AL WC <3

athletic article yesterday suggested that no veteran name manager will want to put up with preller’s micromanaging, but i imagine some combination of money + having good young players will do the trick

mookieproof, Saturday, 2 October 2021 21:09 (two years ago) link

biggest AB of soto's career right here

, Saturday, 2 October 2021 23:09 (two years ago) link

sox are killing me here. renfro loses it in the… twilight? why’s he playing center in the 8th inning of a 1-0 game anyway??

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 2 October 2021 23:18 (two years ago) link

That pitch the Boston reliever was so upset about: could have been called a strike, but not an obvious strike by any means.

clemenza, Saturday, 2 October 2021 23:20 (two years ago) link

(xpost) For you and me, but not for Soto, I don't think.

clemenza, Saturday, 2 October 2021 23:22 (two years ago) link

Soto's a bum

, Saturday, 2 October 2021 23:30 (two years ago) link

so the sox and yankees will take the wild cards with wins on sunday; with losses, they'll at least get a game 163

boston won the season series against each of the other three, so should play at home in case of ties

chris sale is slated to pitch for the sox tomorrow in what is not now a must-win game -- but if they lose they could face two straight must-win games instead of one. do you still start him?

also the yankees are facing michael wacha tomorrow, which would seem to bode well for them

mookieproof, Sunday, 3 October 2021 00:46 (two years ago) link

Always bet against post-rookie Wacha

Even this Mariners game right now is nuts.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 3 October 2021 04:39 (two years ago) link

Still a chance for a four-way wild card tie going into the last day of the season

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 3 October 2021 04:54 (two years ago) link

omg if there’s a four-way tie boston and toronto would be at home for game 163 and the yankees would choose which one they wanted to play

CURRENT POSSIBILITIES (YES, THIS ALL COULD HAPPEN)

Four-way tie: Boston, Toronto, New York, Seattle

Three-way tie 1: Boston, Seattle, Toronto

Three-way tie 2: Boston, New York, Seattle

Three-way tie 3: Boston, Toronto, New York

Three-way tie 4: Toronto, New York, Seattle

That's amazing. Win or lose, at least you wouldn't have to play whichever team you insult again.
