hmm, there aren't any friendly towns/safe zones?

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 17 July 2009 18:46 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah but those are filled with mercs and militamen who are just not shooting at you at the moment

maybe i haven't seen enough of the map yet, but i have yet to come across an unarmed noncombatant. are there any?

goole, Friday, 17 July 2009 18:48 (fourteen years ago) link

disc has playability destroying scratch ;_; going to go see if gamestop replacement policy is legit.

oh shit!

have you tried loading it to the HD? i have to do it cos my xbox is effed but it seems like the best thing to do anyway

goole, Friday, 17 July 2009 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link

this scratch is momentous - wont even recognize the disc.

thinking the gamestop dude is going to give me the stinkeye, but i will demand satisfaction.

How'd it get scratched? HOW'D IT GET SCRATCHED?! /nickcage

ledge, Friday, 17 July 2009 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link

great so i can't even play crysis anymore. it locks up whenever it tries to load a new level, or save. doubly anooying as my last save is just before you go into the final chamber in the alien ship, where you just have to jizz around for ten minutes till the doors open.

ledge, Friday, 17 July 2009 21:28 (fourteen years ago) link

oh great just after I wrote that it popped back into life. only took five minutes to load the level there fella! good going! now it's autosaving, let's see what kind of a heroic time that will take.

ledge, Friday, 17 July 2009 21:33 (fourteen years ago) link

7 minutes! great job!

ledge, Friday, 17 July 2009 21:40 (fourteen years ago) link

It is so cool to have a 5min+ time out penalty for dying! Really makes me play better!

ledge, Friday, 17 July 2009 21:45 (fourteen years ago) link

another checkpoint! w00t!

ledge, Friday, 17 July 2009 21:49 (fourteen years ago) link

fixed it. apparentrly i had to download and use some other dude's save game <shrug>

ledge, Friday, 17 July 2009 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link

i got far cry 2 the other night. i'm not very far (just getting to mike's bar, although i got there at night and had to go find somewhere to sleep until it opens) but this game is amazing so far. everything feels really nice (driving, shooting, the handheld map) and it seems like a really smart game.

is there an easy way to see which guns you're carrying? i mean, you have that menu that shows the stats of all the guns, but i had a hard time figuring out which ones i had and if i should swap them for the ones dropped by dead soldiers.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 20 July 2009 14:57 (fourteen years ago) link

the whole jamming of salvaged weapons thing has made me use the non picked up guns pretty much exclusively. in this game middle of a firefight + jammed weapon = pretty much u gonna die.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 15:15 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah don't use the dropped guns, they're all in terrible condition. apparently the AK is less jam-prone than the G3 (realism!) but not by much

shooting but also swimming rusts your guns out i think. i've been rolling around with the 1903 springfield and a mac-10 as a secondary weapon, seems to work pretty well. i don't know if the reliability upgrades are worth it, you can stop by the gun shop and pick up a brand new one before doing anything

oh and apparently there are bonus missions? some kind of pre-order code deal...

goole, Monday, 20 July 2009 16:42 (fourteen years ago) link

the bad reviews of this game are that it's tedious but i'm really enjoying the long journeys. getting out of the truck whenever the green blinker pops up and hunting around for diamonds is a treat. planning a route around a checkpoint or just offing everyone is equally fun to me at the moment

goole, Monday, 20 July 2009 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

also, the rivers! parallel road system innit

goole, Monday, 20 July 2009 16:48 (fourteen years ago) link

oh so hey, does anyone know if the game differs significantly depending on who you choose to be at the beginning?

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i am playing as irish dude - wondering if your initial buddies are different and if so if they are just diff char models or if they actually differ re: dialog or whatever.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm the israeli dude

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

your buddy missions might be different? as in, each particular non-selected character has his/her own string (?) but which one you meet is randomized (??)

goole, Monday, 20 July 2009 17:20 (fourteen years ago) link

well my first mission was to rescue my best buddy from a place where he was held captive (he is the older indian/sikh dude), and now im doing his buddy mission where i divert intel on some arms smuggler mission. so if thats different than what you guys are up to, then it might make a difference.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:30 (fourteen years ago) link

should say first major mission, after the recon one and whatever.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:31 (fourteen years ago) link

it sounds like the buddy-rescue mission is always first, but the buddy is different (mine is "marty", i think).

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 20 July 2009 17:32 (fourteen years ago) link

because i have shameful grinding tendencies i've been doing the arms convoy and assassination missions first, i haven't done anything else yet really.

iirc i have three buddies? the ex-yugoslav dude, marty and a woman named michele. i may be misremembering tho

apparently the biggest 'choice' is the very beginning -- how/where you run out of the hotel determines which faction takes you in and what your starting mission is

goole, Monday, 20 July 2009 17:45 (fourteen years ago) link

it's pretty refreshing to play a sandboxy game that doesn't have some kind of morality/karma system

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 20 July 2009 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah in that comments section (maybe linked upthread, cant remember) it seems pretty obvious that the main designer designed things pretty much around the idea that you and all of your buddies (urgh kind of embarassed having to keep using that btw) are all pretty much evil opportunistic bastards

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 20:21 (fourteen years ago) link

which makes it easier to do rotten shit, knowing that yer dude is kind of unredeemable from the get go - i have this sort of obsessive tendency to go for the good option in rpgish stff, so its nice not to really have that option by default

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 20:22 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah exactly!

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 20 July 2009 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link

another thing: the writing in this is kind of top notch, was pretty impressed w/the reporter dude in the bar for instance.

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 20:28 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah even the educated nihilist bs from the jackal is semi-ok

goole, Monday, 20 July 2009 20:29 (fourteen years ago) link

how many tapes u guys found?

goole, Monday, 20 July 2009 20:30 (fourteen years ago) link

honestly couldn't get into this. Maybe i'll give it another go somewhere down the road.

hay forks while we're in the same spot can i say your username is causing some irritating spacing issues

goole, Monday, 20 July 2009 20:46 (fourteen years ago) link

more awesome details: fire! looks great! when a spot gets burned i guess it stays burned for the whole game? if you are particularly molotov-happy the landscape would start to look real hellish by the end...

goole, Monday, 20 July 2009 20:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, i guess i'll ditch th' name.

PLEASE SIT TIGHT WHILE WE MAKE NEW ARRANGEMENTS (forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 July 2009 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

oh man dudes in this def do not enjoy getting molotoved

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 22:02 (fourteen years ago) link

SO MUCH FOR REALISM

wax onleck, wax affleck (jjjusten), Monday, 20 July 2009 22:03 (fourteen years ago) link

motoloved

PLEASE SIT TIGHT WHILE WE MAKE NEW ARRANGEMENTS (forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 July 2009 22:22 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe i should give this a go in an ILG PLAYERS CLUB style. I wasn't overly impressed by crysis, grpahically lovely of course but gameplay and story both a bit meh. how does far cry (1 or 2) compare?

ledge, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 08:57 (fourteen years ago) link

i was picking dudes off at a checkpoint, and i noticed a guy had a (wounded) comrade in a fireman's carry. has anyone seen this?

goole, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 15:33 (fourteen years ago) link

protip: when you're doing missions from a particular faction, finish all those missions before doing some from somewhere else. apparently i "switched sides" to faction B and cut off the first mission string from faction A. shit. i'm considering starting the whole damn game over, i hate getting cut out of content!

goole, Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:10 (fourteen years ago) link

shit makes sense though. word gets around, you know?

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:14 (fourteen years ago) link

ha i know! that's the beauty of the game -- take the GTA sandboxy elements and say, ok, how would this REALLY work. i should have known ;_;

goole, Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:20 (fourteen years ago) link

i have got to get in some FC2 time this weekend

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 24 July 2009 17:39 (fourteen years ago) link

confidential to ubisoft montreal: day and night difference near the equator is basically equal; having your game's sundown after 9pm and sunup before 6am is some bullshit. night time is the right time.

goole, Saturday, 25 July 2009 20:53 (fourteen years ago) link

any of you dudes play around with the HANG GLIDER yet!?

goole, Saturday, 25 July 2009 20:54 (fourteen years ago) link

oh man, no.

i am crawling on this game, but i got an hour or two in yesterday. i wanted to be slick on the first assassination mission (the police chief motorcade), but i was spotted and got taken out by a jeep. my "buddy" stepped in and when i came to it was an easy firefight.

then i got the mission to blow up the medicine shipments at the trainyard (!) and died about 5 times at various checkpoints while trying to get there. so i guess just blowing through them isn't a good idea, huh? they seem to get in their rides and hunt you down. maybe i should take the bus?

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Monday, 27 July 2009 15:06 (fourteen years ago) link

far cry 2 - fucking LOVE this game. it's like underrated ST/Amiga game HUNTER for the 21st century. or Midwinter, kinda reminds me of that. i've waited like 15 years for this game!

you should've seen the stealthy number i pulled on a guard post last night. 3 guards with AKs, all taken out one by one with silent pistol headshots from behind. they didn't know what hit them.
