the NL doesn't deserve a second wild card

mlb.com might be back to normal for now (i'm guessing they're gonna push it back to the crappy new version soon) but the gameday interface is now updated and shitty for me. all the text is now too big or too small. what is the point of this

Man, what the hell happened with the Padres last night?!
Probably a really bad sign when your two megastars are at each other’s throats.

they are? tatis and machado i guess? i've been watching the padres broadcasts, and didn't notice too much of that, but maybe they just weren't showing it.

the story of last night's game, up until the O'Neill HR, was the home plate umpire. that was one of the worst called games i've ever seen. the strike zone extended about 4 feet outside, for both teams

the hysterical twitter narrative was that they were feuding but that doesn't really sound like what it was

Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. had to be separated while yelling at one another in the dugout pic.twitter.com/y1x58iKeVB

I know people will take the angle of “Machado is a bad teammate”…but you couldn’t be more wrong here. This was a leadership move. Let’s not forget FTJ is still 22. A phenomenal player, but still a lot to learn. Tatis can’t get tossed in the 5th inning of a game they need to win.

obviously not the type of thing that would happen on a first place team......and now they're probably toast after today's arrieta start

oh wow, yeah i missed that completely last night. they are definitely struggling right now, makes sense.

tatis dropped an easy pop-fly in CF today in the first inning with the bases loaded. now i wish they would have shown machado right after that happened!

I understand what that tweet about manny is getting it - but I disagree. Getting in someone’s face and screaming isn’t leadership.

Veteran leadership from the guy who brought us the Padres Swagg Chain

Getting in someone’s face and screaming isn’t leadership.

why not, it's sports

, Sunday, 19 September 2021 20:35 (two years ago) link

And how well did that go?

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 19 September 2021 21:05 (two years ago) link

leadership is when coach yells at people in the locker room at half-time and everyone is so afraid of coach that they play better

tatis has said in interviews that manny is the team leader and the guy he goes to when he needs to hear things he doesn't want to hear..... it's ok, these things happen

, Sunday, 19 September 2021 21:32 (two years ago) link

“It’s sports” just comes across a lot like “boys will be boys” to me.
Maybe they both settle down and Tatis gets whatever message he needs to get.
Maybe they don’t. Maybe you don’t want it to become a pattern of confrontations in the dug out. If machado wants to set him straight, fine - but if he can’t do it in a way that doesn’t lead to shouting and shoving, I’m not sure that’s the best quality leadership.
I’ll have to watch the clip again maybe and see if it’s Tatis over reacting to machado approaching him, or if Manny was the one going over and escalating things.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 19 September 2021 21:46 (two years ago) link

it's sports means it's probably a little more intense than a quarterly 1 on 1 with the regional manager

, Sunday, 19 September 2021 21:50 (two years ago) link

You haven’t met some of my past managers!

And for the record, I’m not saying manny is a shitty team leader bases off this one incident. Just that this not a great example of leadership in action.

Great story: LHP Anthony Gose is being called up to @MLB by Cleveland, source confirms @indiansPro report. Gose, 31, last appeared in the majors as a @Tigers outfielder on May 15, 2016. Congratulations to Anthony. What a journey. @MLBNetwork

he probably just hasn't been introduced to the facts around covid-19, or he doesn't have access to a free clinic

and it as nothing to do with him being a christian. definitely not

i haven't seen a player score from second base on a sac fly before, but harrison bader did it tonight. but what's crazy is it wasn't even close, and there wasn't even an error or anything. lorenzo cain caught a fly ball at the wall and fell to the ground doing it, true, but he quickly flipped the ball to the RF, who made a perfect throw to the cutoff man. but by then it was already too late to even merit a throw to home.

cool!

the other night somebody, i can't remember who - kike hernandez maybe? - tried to tag from FIRST to second on a deep fly to center and he would have made it if he'd stayed on the bag. respect the hustle.

gotta say I'm pretty unsettled by the St. Louis Cardinals once again getting hot right as the season ends

frogbs, Thursday, 23 September 2021 13:37 (two years ago) link

almost unfair how they loaded up at the deadline by acquiring . . . jon lester and j.a. happ

Marcus Semien needs another double for 40 HR/40 doubles. That was a big deal when Willie Stargell did it in 1973--it had already been done ~ten times, but not for a while. Semien will be about the 40th guy to do it (or at least the 40th season; a few guys, like Pujols, have done it more than once). The great Chris Davis had 50 HR/40 doubles in 2013.

clemenza, Sunday, 26 September 2021 00:45 (two years ago) link

semien and bo have also, i believe, set the homer record for combined middle infielders

mookieproof, Sunday, 26 September 2021 00:50 (two years ago) link

78 HR...I would have thought something more than that during the PED era.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 02:58 (two years ago) link

they're gonna lose in the wildcard game and suddenly that will be that

mookieproof, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 03:28 (two years ago) link

lol that would be so insane.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 07:54 (two years ago) link

though maybe not any more insane than the dodgers having a 100-win season and going one and done.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 07:57 (two years ago) link

Honestly they’ll win the WC then lose the division series

One absolutely bonkers thing I noticed today - this season could very well end with no hitters over 7 fWAR. Going all the way back to 1884 when the NL expanded beyond 112 games, I can only find 2 seasons where that happened, 1900 and 1918. Didn't even happen in the strike seasons. Most seasons it doesn't come remotely close to happening.

, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 18:42 (two years ago) link

Obviously there were a lot of injuries this year but this is extreme

, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 18:44 (two years ago) link

er expanded to 112 games, not beyond

, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 18:44 (two years ago) link

what the fuck Devin

Devin Williams is being placed on the 10-day IL with a fractured right hand. He told us he had too much to drink after Sunday’s celebration, got upset about something and punched a wall with his pitching hand. He will need surgery.

“If I could take it back, I would.”
