I think about these two and a half pages from Norm Macdonald’s book constantly. When I reviewed it, I wrote that they would “make for a fine eulogy”—and I swear I didn’t mean anything by it. But they do. pic.twitter.com/vxLRAd2OeP

Very sad to hear that Leta Powell Drake passed away. Was told going viral last year brought her great joy, which warms my heart knowing I played a small part in that. What an extraordinary woman.

Rest in peace, Leta Powell Drake, you legend.pic.twitter.com/3oCYAd9vZD https://t.co/WJmHEsMuAY

his old pal the Saint passed earlier this year.

calzino, Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:19 (two years ago) link

I think most people were amazed that he outlived Saint. RIP. There doesn't seem to be much footage of him playing but his stats are astonishing.

Are You Still in Love With Me, Klas-Göran? (Tom D.), Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:26 (two years ago) link

His career was over when he was 31, last played for England when he was 27.

Are You Still in Love With Me, Klas-Göran? (Tom D.), Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:28 (two years ago) link

his goalscoring rate in his early days was incredible - it even makes that [redacted] at Man Utd seem a bit shabby

Cristiano Ronaldo broke his "top five leagues" goals record in 2017

An all time great

fix up luke shawp (darraghmac), Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:30 (two years ago) link

He has iirc about seventy league goals on shearers "record"

fix up luke shawp (darraghmac), Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:30 (two years ago) link

124 goals in 157 games by the time he was 21

calzino, Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:31 (two years ago) link

Just imagine what he could have achieved if he'd been a boring bastard like Kane or Shearer.

Are You Still in Love With Me, Klas-Göran? (Tom D.), Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:34 (two years ago) link

before he turned professional he scored 122 goals in one season for the Chelsea youth side in the '56-57 season!!

calzino, Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:48 (two years ago) link

oh yeah it would have to be Spurs vs Chelsea today - good timing by the lad!

calzino, Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:53 (two years ago) link

Used to see Greavsie knocking them in for Barnet back around 1980, when I'd make a regular trip up to Underhill with my older brother. The only solid memory I have of him is when another player rolled the ball past the goalie and he made sure to nip in and bash it in himself. Once a poacher eh.

Wow, just reading about Greaves ill-fated stint at Milan.

nashwan, Sunday, 19 September 2021 11:36 (two years ago) link

it's quite a story, and even when he was at odds with the continental style of football, very unhappy and often on the lash - he was still banging in the goals.

calzino, Sunday, 19 September 2021 11:53 (two years ago) link

don't watch that 2018 youtube of him recalling the time Trump did the league cup draw with him in the 80's, where he says Trump is a "great guy". It's not the time for that!
