Just discovered this great old timey banjo player, Nora Brown, then found out she's a kid -- only 16 now and only 14 when the record I listened to (Cinnamon Tree) came out. Just insanely good.

Comprehensive compilation of Anadolu Pop singer.
Very catchy music, simple riffs tied in with traditional music.
Picked up a few titles by people in thsi area a few years ago. I read the book Anadolu Psych which I've since heard slagged by somebody who I think knows quite a bit about the genre but he also slagged the Can Book from a couple of years ago , so not sure to what degree I totally agree with him. Would like a book on the genre from him though, may give a better perspective.
Anyway Turkey early 70s exploring the interface between traditional sounds and more recent psych and rock begat some great music.

Cover mount cd from a magazine taht looked into the artist's history this edition Dizzy Gillespie. I think it begins very early but soon hits the bebop stuff.
I had this floating around the front room and hadn't listened to it in years. BUt it is still working and has some really great stuff on it.
I also have Dizzy's memoir TO Be Or Not TO Bop lying around the bedroom after finding it in a 2nd hand shop a couple of years ago. I read it back in the mid 80s and thought it was great. have wanted to get back to it since, has some real insight into the black experience in the mid 40s & 50s as well as some more lighthearted hipper stuff. I remember it being one of the better musical memoirs, but not sure what comparisons i would have been able to make at the time and not reread to guage it since. think its a good one though.

Underground hard rcok at the tail end of teh psychedelic era I think, may have dates a bit askew . Like Sabbath era garage rock or something along those lines. like if garage is a process as well as a more specific scene this has the same relationship to the later heavier end of things that the better known garage stuff had to the British invasion.
Gnarly, a great potential ingredient for later stuff so hope its being picked up on. Would love to hear the consequences of a semi decent bunch of players being isolated somewhere on a diet of this, Ethiopiques and a few other esoteric releases.

rocking record by a band with a weird instrumental line up various horns and 2 sets of drums.
Enjoying this and kicking myself for having missed grabbing the previous release for 2 Euro a couple of years ago when it was in a sale in a local shop. I think it just wound up getting cleared off the racks and probably destroyed. I don't know why I couldn't check the title online . maybe just forgot at the time.
Oh well, good to see an overview of Shabaka Hutchings releases in Uncut this week, though I think that may be the previous issue right now. Need to pick up some more of them, presumably must be a Wire how to buy article on the same thing. Really should have grabbed the Comet IS Coming cd a couple of years ago cos it was cheap around town and was on a lot of end of year lists.
Well I'm aware fo how good this is now so will have my eyes open in future.

Currently mainly listening through a load of podcasts each day with a single track of music between each 2 from various sources but through Spotify. So am discovering some new stuff through the process.

Autechre live at Coachella 1999 - found a much longer recording than the one I had, weird to hear them kick on for half an hour after the set I know so well.

oh yeah on e other thing that I got to hear part of over teh last couple of days was the live set by Sonic Youth from Dublin Olympia in 1998. I thought it was great when i was there and bought a tape from a local bootleg selling shop. Not sure where that is so glad that this turned up on Dime recently.
It says in the blurb for it that the sound quality isn't great so would love to find tehtape and compare. had meant to transfer it to Flac and up it so glad there is either the same recording or an alternative source already in circulation. & itt does resonate massively with me. I liked the long drawn out droney stuff taht year, quite blissful. Reminded me heavily of teh long songs on the VU Columbus University set from 66. Seemed to have a different feel than elsewhere or possibly elsewhen. I had a friend who was a massive SY fan who said 98 was a bit of an off year for them live so great to find this one good. I now have a few other dates from the same year which I have yet to listen to. I'm spending a lot more time listening to Spotify for podcasts etc so rarely listening to the live stuff i have which uses a different program. But yeah this still connects.

I start almost every morning down a youtube jazz rabbithole, exploring one of the thousands of Blue Note, Verve, Prestige etc. albums I've never heard of. Today it's Lorez Alexandria on Impulse, showtune-y vocalist supported by Wynton Kelly.

Also listening to mike t-diva's Record Mirror disco playlist. And a ton of ZZ Top.

Clicked on a review of this thinking I'd hate it because of the frankly awful name, but then was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved the sample track, downloaded...great record!

The Blixa Sounds edition of the Miami Remaster is up on Spotify so I've been listening through bits of teh 2nd disc. Including several tracks with presumably working titles that sound a lot like the version sof songs on Death Party e.p. I can't tell if they are in fact different takes on som eof them. I think the version of Come Back Jim did sound like it could be one done by a different line up which would be contemporary to the recordings on Miami possibly. Did strike me that there were a lot of songs that Jeffrey lee Pierce had reworked from having written them much earlier, things like I Hear Your Heart Singing which has a studio version on 1990's Pastorla Hide & Seek and a live version on the recording used on the live disc of Early Warning which is like 9 years earlier and features a totally different line up so the style changes quite a bit I think. Or teh version of Walking With The Beast which was a single b-side when the better know version is on Las Vegas Story about 2 years later. I think there may be a 3rd version on this set.

Compilation of a series of singles that were released over the course of 1981 to help keep the band financed. A lot of very dodgy experimental techniques were tried out by the band. This winds up sounding pretty krautrocky among other stuff. I hope that Alan Rankine is going to complete a memoir sometime soon cos would love to hear what his take on this era was. Do love the band when he was in them, less so after he left.

3cd set of Masekela material recorded and released between the mid 60s and mid 70s. Covers a lot of ground in a very funky way. I wasn't as familiar with his work as i would like prior to buying this and still want to get more. This is pretty sublime.
