Can't remember which thread this was in that we bitched about it, probably multiple ones, but stepped foot in a Chipotle for the first time since before the pandemic today and was disgusted to see signs that said "We can only accept cash if is tendered for the exact amount, but you are free to use debit or credit cards". Despise this poor hating bullshit.

I've never thought about it, but it's also kind of a rip that the fare on buses in this town is $1.35.

When we were between cars, you know how hard it was to round up 135¢ in cash?

Of course I tried to use the cards as much as I could, only $1.25 per ride on those. But sometimes, the guy would forget to mail it to me.

The main point being is that I run into plenty of people who ask for help getting some bus fare. And I guess they're going to have to overpay, unless someone actually has a dime in their pocket that they're willing to give.

parcel delivery = basically screaming into the void.

UPS is delivering a tablet my mother needs to use to go back to work, and the senders put the wrong address, but htey corrected this morning.

the driver puts the package is delivered at first, then changes it to Delivery Attempted, Redelivery Rescheduled for 9/20. naturally, nobody came to our door and knocked, there's no package, and no InfoNotice on our door.

every UPS person we contacted (3) seems to not see the Delivery Attempted status and insists the package was delivered and directs us to file a non-receipt claim, which you can't do because it recognizes that the Delivery is going to be attempted on Monday.

more of rational anger but it's like...resolving issues takes such effort that only gluttons for punishment like me that actually are willing to waste hours of a day doing it wind up getting them resolved.

people who don't understand the concept of basic math when thinking about how much time they need to get somewhere.

"you haven't left yet? it's 20 miles away"

"I'll get there in 10 minutes, relax"

"You'd have to average 120 miles an hour to do that"

"No I wouldn't, I'll be there in 10, I've done it before".

*shows up 30 minutes later*

well, that too.

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Friday, 1 October 2021 17:12 (two years ago) link

on the math side i would think one would know you couldn't get 20 miles in less than 20 minutes without exceeding 60 mph which is 1 mile/minute, but.....apparently not the case for some!

I can't stand online restaurant reviews (on google, on facebook, on yelp, etc.) by civilians that posit themselves professional critics but pepper their writing with the most worthless and generic descriptors, like "to die-for," "homemade," and "all the ingredients were very fresh." What the fuck does that even mean, "fresh?" Have you never had anything but frozen burritos your whole life?

Also not a big fan of ridiculous booster hyperbole. "I spent two years in Thailand, and let me tell you, Thai One On in Podunk, Kansas, is better than any Thai food I ever had there. All the ingredients were super fresh or homemade. The pad thai was to die-for!"

two weeks pass...

Better Call Saul series 4 on dvd. menu lists all the episodes and all the extras but try and watch them and it'll say "please insert disk n". swap disks and try and remember what you were going to watch.

just list the episodes and extras on the current disk.

That's...fascinatingly stupid!

My IA of the day is that thing where a stockperson fills every empty space on the shelf with eight cases of a thing, including those spaces where other products should go. So you have four dozen of that one thing while everything around it remains out of stock until all four dozen units of the other thing have sold.

the episodes and extras were spread over 3 disks but in one list. and it's a two-level menu to get the player to play the disk because of all the other settings and play-from-usb and network options. and then it asks if you want to 'resume play?' do i?

but what was worse was that the deleted scenes weren't listed as extras and you could only see if an episode had deleted scenes by selecting the individual episode menu. must've swapped the disks 10 times on friday finishing everything off.

We had a windstorm here yesterday. At around 8 at night I checked my work email and there was a message saying the school was without power and they'd have an update in the morning. So I got all keyed up thinking about how I might have a day off, which would be AMAZING since I spend all my weekends class planning these days. A day off at the end of a weekend, with most of my planning already done, would be a huge gift. And of course I didn't sleep well bc I knew I'd find out in the morning. Woke up with a headache to find that power is back on and school is happening as usual. WHY DID I CHECK MY EMAIL LAST NIGHT?

stores that do delivery, but don't make all of the items in tehir store available for delivery, not because they can't deliver it, but because it doesn't show up on the website where you order it for delivery.

Aldi has a few non-food items that a friend wanted me to pick up for them for whene we see each other next, and I feel like crap (didn't sleep well) so I wanted to have it delivered, come to find out I can't even order it for pickup or delivery as it's a non-food item and doesn't show up.

Accummulating vast amounts of things to listen to on Spotify. Hour long podcasts x umpteen all of which I will eventually get to , like definitely but new stuff appearing each day & wanting to hear a music track I'm not very familiar with between each.
So tryingto shift things around to get things into a listening order I like and somehow while trying to highligt a few things to move tehm up the playlist I trigger one of teh tracks which starts playing and gets rid of all of teh trackis above it in the queue. So essential listening disappears. How will I live without the info i was getting from each and every one of those things that disappeared. Lots oo fit could be lifechanging like.

About as frustrating as trying to highlight then shift tracks on teh queue and finding that the tracks you're trying to move don't but tracks from further up the queue either duplicate and appear next to where the curser was or just shift down fro their place in the queue including from the next thing up to play. Don't get how this works so don't know how to stop it.
BUt it is rather frustrating

I donate blood with the Red Cross pretty regularly, so much so that even waiting the mandatory minimum period between donations (55 days, iirc) I managed to test below the required iron level one time last summer, leading them to suggest I go a little longer than the minimum weeks between donations to let my levels build up again. I most recently donated about a month ago, and everything was hunky dory.

But yesterday I get a solicitous call from the Red Cross informing me that there is a national blood shortage, and that given I've over the years donated x units of blood that helped y number of patients, and most recently donated just a month ago, could they count on me to donate again?

First of all, as far as I can tell there is literally *always* a national blood shortage, so nice try. But second, they clearly *know* I regularly donate, to the day/number of units of blood. So why are they wasting their time calling me asking me to donate again?! They already *know* I'm going to donate again! I would have appreciated it more if they just called to thank me for my service, but to call a regular and ask for *more*, and to even tackily dangle out a gift card as a reward, as if I need an incentive to be good? What a bunch of ungrateful jerks.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 15:48 (two years ago) link

Thank you for your service? As a fellow blood donor the idea of this entering my mind makes me eye roll so hard, especially as I have a rare blood type that’s useful for them to have. I can’t imagine being that bratty and ungrateful over being able to help people, or about a donation service contacting a regular donor the way they do, but then again I’m not Josh outside Chicago.

This one could probably also be posted to the stupid co-workers thread, but it has been stuck in my craw since yesterday. A co-worker brought in some pastries yesterday morning to share with the office, but since a) I'm not really at a point where I'm ready to start sharing food with co-workers in a pandemic and, more importantly, b) I'm really trying to eat carefully for a variety of reasons, I didn't have any.

At the end of the day, said co-worker comes up to me and says, "you didn't thank me for bringing in the pastries, you were the only one who didn't". I said, "oh, yeah, that was really nice of you to bring them in, but I didn't have any". She said, "wow, that is even more ungrateful" and stomped off.

Like, what the fuck? I'm to blame for not eating something I didn't want and not adequately thanking you for something I didn't ask for?

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 9 November 2021 16:09 (two years ago) link

finally somebody who's not afraid to call the Red Cross on their bullshit

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 16:30 (two years ago) link

One of my temp jobs in college was working the phones for the Red Cross, soliciting/reminding people about donations.

Midway through the third hour, I come across a "Ted Geisel". I go, huh. Call the number and a woman answers, tell her I'm from the Red Cross. She sighs heavily, but doesn't say anything. Said, "Before I go any further, may I ask, is the number of the author?"

This was a year or so after he had died. She says YES. and I tell her "thank you for your family's service, I'll take him off the list."

Didn't have any idea of how many donations any of those people had made or what their blood type was or if they'd be interested in any coupons. Just called the numbers and read the script.

I also didn't actually thank the Geisel family for their service. But I swear I did call up the Dr. Seuss house one night!

Ummm....isn't the current time...the actual sky planetary alignment time? It's DST during the summer that is the artificial one to give an extra hour of daylight in the evening. That's why the summer sun is directly overhead at 1pm instead of at noon.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Tuesday, 9 November 2021 17:09 (two years ago) link

Well, yes, to be specific, this was the end of Daylight Savings Time, but the point is that the whole artificially shifting an hour thing is antiquated as fuck and needs to go away.

it’s either go home in the dark or eat breakfast in the dark, you can’t have it both ways. the days are shorter. i’d rather have a little light while i’m walking to the bus to go to work tbh.

The lunch places around here very frequently have absolutely bare chip racks, or just like 100 packets of one certain type which never seems to be consistent.

Can't stand the guy anyway, but jeez.
Somebody got a portaloo attached to the men's shed container unit at the start of teh path into the woods. Youth from the area decided to set it alight yesterday. I had a fire in the stairwell something like 10 years ago which I don't want to have repeated. Could just be fear but think these youth are running out of things to set alight. Same ones have spent the last few weeks throwing fireworks around the estate.

Had that situation in current block of flats some years back. Illegal sublet in Flat 1 near the main front door had lost the main front door key - so was leaving the main door open on the latch. As I found out when they angrily confronted me when I locked it.

I reported the key situation to the management company a few days later after coming across a police blockade at the top of our road where they said they were searching for someone with firearm last spotted in the vicinity.
