I’m guessing they’ll swap out the sample ASAP:

Drake has given a writing credit to R. Kelly on 'Certified Lover Boy' and sampled the singer, who is currently on trial for multiple sex trafficking and racketeering charges, for his song "TSU" https://t.co/0EEEVONP2z

has he "given him a writing credit" or is that what people get when theyre sampled

the latter.

we no longer credit writers when they're criminals -- part of restorative justice

xheugy eddy (D-40), Saturday, 4 September 2021 02:52 (two years ago) link

the thing people are taking issue with is the sample itself really, no one's saying "the sample is fine but r kelly is bad so he shouldn't be credited for it"

ufo, Saturday, 4 September 2021 02:53 (two years ago) link

well i think people are implying the problem is the 'writing credit'

xheugy eddy (D-40), Saturday, 4 September 2021 05:08 (two years ago) link

which is a natural result of the sampling & i haven't seen anyone fail to understand this (but i'm also not really following whatever twitter convos are happening about this maybe people are that stupid idk). like the actual RS article makes that connection very clear & focuses on the sampling itself, despite the tweet being worded a little weird.

Leaving all the singles off of this feels as if he had left “Nice For What” and “God’s Plan” off of Scorpion. Need to listen again, but so far preferring Dark Lane Demo Tapes. But maybe this one is consciously “no beefs, no sneak disses.”

And it turns out it’s not even a sample. Great work all around

xheugy eddy (D-40), Sunday, 5 September 2021 03:54 (two years ago) link

that seems to be responding to a buzzfeed piece which completely bungles the story by claiming r kelly was "credited as a co-lyricist" which is obviously wrong

but it doesn't actually address the point of "it's a bad look to sample r kelly, especially because it means he gets a credit". like ok, even if they didn't actually care about the bit from the r kelly track & just wanted to use a sample of ron c talking that just happened to have the intro from the r kelly track in the background, if they do agree he's that bad then maybe they should have just left it off completely. the orchestral bit from the r kelly track behind ron c talking isn't "faint" either

Give me a break

xheugy eddy (D-40), Sunday, 5 September 2021 04:48 (two years ago) link

It’s a slowed clip from an old og Ron c fuck action, nobody was like “let’s sample r Kelly for this!!”, this is a tempest in a tea pot

It’s rain and owl noises lol

“I’m running out of ops, they’re running out of options”

My son, a budding fan of rap, and I have incessant conversations about whether or we like Drake or just think he’s hopelessly ridiculous as a brand/person

The timing of my recent visit plus Covid meant we didn’t see an MCU movie in the theater, but Donda and CLB dropped during that window so we were able to experience those events together, though we had different opinions
