I am okay with Ms. Sunglasses being Janis Joplin.

Haven't settled on an ID for Mopey McModBoi between Jimi and the waitress.

(Wait - are the waitresses in this establishment alive or dead? They don't have halos.)

A bass player. Maybe John Entwistle?

"Bobby Gillespie" (ft. Heroin) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 1 September 2021 13:28 (two years ago) link

Okay, a young Entwistle makes sense. Thanks. I will rest easier tonight.

Is that Mariska Hargitay delivering a cheeseburger?

Is that Richard Manuel in the back row? And who's the lad inbetween Bob, MJ, Freddie and Moonie?

John Bonham and Marc Bolan?

"Bobby Gillespie" (ft. Heroin) (Tom D.), Wednesday, 1 September 2021 13:39 (two years ago) link

I initially thought it was Harry Nilsson, but yeah that's Bonzo.

Are there two Jim Morrisons? Or is one Hutchence?

One of them is Rick Parfitt.

xxp: if you're talking about the shirtless dude top right, that's Bon Scott.

Sid's legs are wild.

― peace, man

That's because of Kurt manspreading, asserting his dominance over Sid.

nickn, Wednesday, 1 September 2021 16:22 (two years ago) link

it's weird that this iconography has moved from "Died in their prime" to just dead, with Zappa, Entwisitle, Joey Ramone, George Harrison. Like, everyone is gonna be there soon. How'd they leave Strummer out, say?

Citole Country (bendy), Wednesday, 1 September 2021 16:36 (two years ago) link

I'd like to see a "27 Club" illustration with Jimi, Janis et al at a collective 28th birthday party in heaven, candles and cake and all. Maybe Jim'll Paint It would oblige.

Which one is Rupert Brooke?

Robert Cray-Cray (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 1 September 2021 17:54 (two years ago) link

I wouldn't want to eat at a donut shop that allows shirtless customers, that's for sure.

Citole Country (bendy), Wednesday, 1 September 2021 17:58 (two years ago) link

Poor old Ian Curtis, maybe he's too difficult to paint.

something so creepy about this style of art. guess it's the subjects

calstars, Wednesday, 1 September 2021 20:12 (two years ago) link

the club 27 one is cursed, particularly amy and jimi's heads, an inch from touching eyeballs, yet completely unaware of each-other.

fc_TEFH28mo (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 1 September 2021 20:14 (two years ago) link

It's bad enough when it is at the regular pizza parlor nostalgia level, but the rock and roll heaven thing is really creepy.

Gwar ina Babyon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 1 September 2021 20:15 (two years ago) link

I think it would be helpful if each poorly drawn person were holding something to identify them. In the manner of medieval saint paintings or the way, in the first picture, Amy WINEhouse is holding WINE.

Marc Bolan: smoking a bowl

John Bonham: eating a bon-bon

Jimi Hendrix: holding a live hen

Kurt Cobain: eating corn on the... cob

etc.

Robert Cray-Cray (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 1 September 2021 20:59 (two years ago) link

Marc would be spinning in his grave at that suggestion.

If Cobain knew he would be immortalized in these shitty paintings, he would have thought twice about checking out.

Mercury putting Hendrix in a headlock and pointing with a "This guy! Am I right?!" is a nice new spin on the genre

oh well, well they’re all there

brimstead, Friday, 2 September 2022 23:59 (one year ago) link

For the first I think I put in “a cheesy poster of Janis Joplin jamming with other dead rock stars in a bar” or something. I originally had Hendrix and Cobain in the prompt too but it rejected that on the “no famous people” rule (sorry, Janis).

The expansion on the second one was similar but without the name I think.

TIL: the artist who first painted the Elvis, Bogart, Marilyn, Dean version of Nighthawks At The Diner was the same artist who painted the album cover for The Scorpions' Blackout. More about the perverse/dumb cultural history of that painting here: https://www.thebeliever.net/the-hopper-consani-connection/
