it's pretty ridiculous that "can't get you out of my head" isn't even the best single on fever either

I was living in a flat in Prague with MTV when Hung Up came out, they had it on repeat every half hour for a good month, it's uh fine I guess.

CGYOOMH is a solid 8/10 but I never need to hear it again, it was everywhere for a couple of years

Can't Get You... is one of the greatest pop songs of all time. Hung Up is not.

I assume the other connection between these two songs is that both songs’ refrains reference the song being a monster earworm.

Deej if you’re talking about the Man With Guitar edit ofSorry then I agree that that is the most brilliant thing associated with Confessions. The new version of “Erotica” on the tour disc released in the album’s wake is also superior to “Hung Up”, and I also rep hard for “Get Together”, if only because more people should have tried to make pop versions of “Mandarine Girl”. But “Hung Up” does have something special that was referred to above: when you hear it emerging out of another track in a club it is almost always an utterly thrilling transition.

“Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” is even better - again, not the best song on Fever, but it has a quality I would describe as iconic if that term had not been so cheapened of late. Statuesque? Few if any pop songs grapple so effectively with the voidlike hollow space at the centre of desire.

The middle part of Confessions is so damn assured: "Let It Will Be," "Forbidden Love," "Jump." But deej otm about the extended "Sorry" remix.

Just never been able to appreciate CGYOOMH whereas Hung Up's vacuous but rip-roaring appeal was instant.

As a big old Kylie fan I don't think I've ever loved CGYOOMH and if I did I got bored of it a long time ago

Sorry that's just how I feel

prefer "Love At First Sight," the best appropriation of French house pop ever, but, goddamn, is this choice a Bataan death march.

Come Into My World > Can't Get You Out of My Head > Love at First Sight

Both great songs here, obv. Might throw my vote to "Hung Up" for the "back and forth between rooms" EQ tricks.

CGYOOMH’s synth line felt in the shadow of Robin S’s “Show Me Love,” which is one of my top-five all-time dance songs, but always glad to hear it when it comes on.

the best fever related thing is fischherspooner’s remix of “come into my world”

brimstead, Tuesday, 31 August 2021 15:51 (two years ago) link

Ahh yea the man w guitar mix is the one I mean

I’ve historically loved certain songs on fever more than CGYOOMH — “love at first sight” esp but also “love affair” — but I can’t deny that of all the songs on the album CGYOOMH feels like it takes up the most space in a physical sense, like it’s solid and immovable piece of history. Maybe I’m just subconsciously trying to redescribe Tim’s use of “statuesque” but it has a very sort of undeniable cultural presence that is 1 of 1

The most statuesque Confessions single is "Jump."

these two songs feel like flip sides of the disco coin. can't get you out of my head is totally drugged up imo, insistent, an invitation to the dark side of desire. even musically, i always hear it like:

Every night, every day
Just to be there in your arms.........
TRUST IN ME.....
JUST IN ME....

a delicious, senseless, endless pulse.

"hung up" feels positive. she's hung up on somebody but it's fun, it's triumphant, it's deliriously riding over the horizon on a massive ridiculous horse. it's the sun breaking over the dancefloor.

"Hung Up", only because I'm still getting over how overplayed "Can't Get Your Out of My Head" was at the time.

Now if this was "Love at First Sight" on the other hand, it would be a different matter altogether.

My problem w jump is it reminds me of The Who - I can see for miles too much

xheugy eddy (D-40), Wednesday, 1 September 2021 01:25 (two years ago) link

why is that a problem

idk sometimes that kind of thing doesnt matter to me and sometimes it does ... kind of cool in the abstract imo but the execution, hard for me to totally get on board

Really feel like JLC's mid-00s sound hit its peak with the Sorry remix (and this is a more controversial statement then it sounds given how many amazing tracks he produced/remixed in that era) - the groove really sounds like this massive wave crashing over your head and engulfing the dancefloor.

Surely not the edit, but the full 7:25 mix?

Yes

"Hung Up" was the biggest song when I was finally old enough to get into nightclubs. It was played at dance clubs, at gay clubs, at student nights, just everywhere, and it never failed to make me happy. I love both these songs in different ways and for different reasons but I think Madonna is always going to win just for the emotional resonance in my nostalgia.
