thank you so much for listening. not actually real flute! it's one of the presets in my yamaha mx49. fun synth — a literal library of sounds, some better than others! i wish i knew more about its full functionality.

also thank you for saying so jordan. i'm mostly joking. i actually really like my own music, but i'm completely an amateur, so it's necessary to stay present and understand the context.

if anyone cares, here's the rest of that ep. i think this is probably my favorite thing i've done over the past year or so and it really does feel like an expression of how i feel about the world presently. i am music, blah blah blah, you guys rule.

na (NA), Friday, 17 December 2021 19:08 (two years ago) link

Sounds great NA, great to hear the classic lineup back together.

I did my annual serious jazz gig backing up trumpeter Ler0y Jones, and it was definitely the best one so far. Pandemic pad practice apparently paid off, since I felt more able to relax, breathe, and listen while playing. Sounds so simple, but it can be so hard when your body is not doing what you want it to do.

Been going to back to my roots and playing a lot of Clyde Stubblefield-type beats

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSb1SXsX1mw

https://www.instagram.com/p/CaAIn2xlBOA/

That style always made sense to me because I'm actually left-handed. :) And it's a lot more fun to pretend it's the '70s rather than practicing the super linear, displaced gospel chops style that's in vogue now.

Funky stuff! Do drummers usually keep time with the right hand? I don't play (I wish I had the sort of living space where I could), but I'm always trying to understand technique so I can apply it to beat programming.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 18 February 2022 19:21 (two years ago) link

Right-handed drummers do, yeah. The right hand is generally playing more notes on the hi-hat/ride, while the left is on the snare. I'm left-handed but learned righty, so I've always had more trouble with faster right-hand parts. Taught myself to lead with the left (ie left hand on the hi-hat) for certain types of beats, but it never feels quite as comfortable coordination-wise.

Uploaded a live recording of William Walton's Bagatelle no. 2 from a Zoom event from a few months ago. Still mean to do a proper recording of a bunch of classical repertoire this spring now that I have decent condenser mics at home (not used here).

As discussed on another IMM thread, it's amazing how real red light fever is even when recording on a phone in my own house, for zero stakes. Although I think it's worse when playing alone, I'm much less likely to choke when playing along to actual music in a studio or with a band. Anyway it's good to record yourself as a reality check whenever you think you may be in danger of sounding good. :)

Coming out of the rabbit hole of recording & mixing drum breaks for this sample pack:
https://chants.bandcamp.com/album/drum-basement-breakbeat-sample-pack-vol-1

Learned a lot on the mixing side especially, I think the results are pretty good for one microphone. Would love to another one in the future, maybe being more meticulous and varied about the sound of the drums themselves (I wasn't too fussy aside from adding some muffling, the mic placement was fairly haphazard as well).
