Reds just pulled Antone with a 3-2 count after he injured himself...I knew you could do this, but I've never actually seen it done. Does he get charged the run if the batter scores or does it go to the new pitcher?
― frogbs, Wednesday, 25 August 2021 03:38 (two years ago) link
I’ve seen it where the batter is injured mid-at bat and the new pinch hitter inherits the same count. The pinch hitter then struck out but the K was charged to the injured hitter.
― Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 25 August 2021 03:46 (two years ago) link
this suggests that, given a 3-2 count, if the batter walks and later scores, it would be charged to antone. any other method of him scoring would be charged to the reliever
Rule 10.16 (h) The procedure when more than one pitcher is involved in giving a base on balls.A relief pitcher shall not be held accountable when the first batter to whom he pitches reaches first base on four called balls, if such batter has a decided advantage in the ball and strike count when pitchers are changed.(1) If, when pitchers are changed, the count is:2 balls, no strikes2 balls, 1 strike3 balls, no strikes3 balls, 1 strike3 balls, 2 strikes, and the batter gets a base on balls, the official scorer shall charge that batter and the base on balls to the preceding pitcher, not to the relief pitcher.(2) Any other action by such batter, such as reaching base on a hit, an error, a fielder's choice, a force out, or being touched by a pitched ball, shall cause such a batter to be charged to the relief pitcher.(3) If, when pitchers are changed, the count is:2 balls, 2 strikes1 ball, 2 strikes1 ball, 1 strike1 ball, no strikesno ball, 2 strikesno ball, 1 strike, the official scorer shall charge that batter and the actions of that batter to the relief pitcher.
A relief pitcher shall not be held accountable when the first batter to whom he pitches reaches first base on four called balls, if such batter has a decided advantage in the ball and strike count when pitchers are changed.
(1) If, when pitchers are changed, the count is:
2 balls, no strikes
2 balls, 1 strike
3 balls, no strikes
3 balls, 1 strike
3 balls, 2 strikes,
and the batter gets a base on balls, the official scorer shall charge that batter and the base on balls to the preceding pitcher, not to the relief pitcher.
(2) Any other action by such batter, such as reaching base on a hit, an error, a fielder's choice, a force out, or being touched by a pitched ball, shall cause such a batter to be charged to the relief pitcher.
(3) If, when pitchers are changed, the count is:
2 balls, 2 strikes
1 ball, 2 strikes
1 ball, 1 strike
1 ball, no strikes
no ball, 2 strikes
no ball, 1 strike,
the official scorer shall charge that batter and the actions of that batter to the relief pitcher.

adam wainwright is having a pretty incredible season for a guy who turns 40 on monday
of course it helps that four of his starts have been against the pirates (10 H and 1 ER in 30 IP ffs)

― Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Sunday, 29 August 2021 12:02 (two years ago) link
it helps that that wainwright's been throwing against the pirates a lot recently, but he's been solid all season. a real surprise that he is still the legitimate "ace" of the cardinals. his last 9 starts: 1.55 ERA, 2.44 FIP, 58.0 IP, and he went through at least 7 innings in all but one (which was 6 innings).
he's second in baseball in innings pitched this year (169.2 right now, behind only Zack Wheeler at 176.2).
i'm a big doofus for calling for his retirement a few years ago. after 2015-18 i really thought he was done. in interviews and such, he always mentions that his arm was really hurting badly during that entire time (duh), but that he legit feels much better now. he always says stuff like "it's nice to not be in terrible pain!" or whatever. makes sense!
yadi is supposedly retiring after 2022, it would be fitting for wainwright to go as well, if he wants to sync up the retirement party train with his pal

the dodgers pythagorean record is 90-45, on pace for a 107-game winning season. irl they're 85-50, on pace for a 103 game-winning season, and in second place to the giants, who are also irl on pace to win 103 games. plus it's an odd year. giants for the WS, i guess.
also, adam wainwright continues to bizarrely be one of the most effective pitchers. he was pitcher of the month for september, and last night tossed a gem over 7 innings that was only slightly spoiled by the relief pitcher allowing a couple of wainwright's inherited runners to score. if that wouldn't have happened, i think he was about to break his PR of 26 consecutive scoreless innings, back in 2010. not bad for an old guy
― Karl Malone, Saturday, 4 September 2021 15:18 (two years ago) link
also, the top 2 contenders for AL ROY are adolis garcia and randy arozarena, both of whom were talented cardinals outfielders a few years ago. garcia was traded to the rangers for cash considerations. arozarena was traded (along with jose martinez, one of the most entertaining baseball players of this century) for matthew liberatore, who will hopefully be like jack flaherty someday, but probably will not.
