On a boat, you said?

Hitsville Ukase (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 22 August 2021 18:43 (two years ago) link

Yeah they don't have a home right now so they live on a boat (not permanently). It's a good set-up, they're not suffering. They're waiting in Kingston bc their next destination was going to be Long Island Sound.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Sunday, 22 August 2021 19:07 (two years ago) link

Ah, interesting.

I am actually sitting outside now under a little roof, so not quite getting rained on, but if the wind picks up anymore I will.

Hitsville Ukase (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 22 August 2021 21:49 (two years ago) link

We were in Beacon seeing friends where it was calm and peaceful, got on the road and hit intense rain and flooding. Drove through a lake of a puddle due to gushing water near North Bergen. Visibility was super low so suddenly. Made it home finally into flooded Hoboken. Nuts drive.

Evan, Sunday, 22 August 2021 22:21 (two years ago) link

Yikes Evan! My parents decided to move halfway through the afternoon because the weather was so calm (and they were running out of water, and my dad hates sitting still), and it was clear sailing until south of West Point, at which point they probably hit the same weather you did, and had huge problems docking safely and are finally tied down but a little shellshocked.

I'm about to go sit on a screen porch and listen to it rain.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Monday, 23 August 2021 00:32 (two years ago) link

Yes, that is usually pretty enjoyable.

Hitsville Ukase (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 23 August 2021 01:08 (two years ago) link

I can't fall asleep without "Rain Falling On Attic Skylight With Quiet Thunder Sounds". I used to require multiple televisions and radios like Roky Erickson, so that's an improvement.

Sleeping during an audible downpour is a rare opportunity not to be missed. You gotta seize the day.

3-4 inches per hour is impressive

mookieproof, Thursday, 2 September 2021 01:37 (two years ago) link

I wouldn’t mind all this water if our basement didn’t flood when it happened. To make it worse this time, the door has mysteriously locked for the first time since we’ve lived here and the landlord can’t find the key, so we can’t we can’t even go down there and move things off the floor or survey the damage.

I moved into a first floor apartment two weeks ago just in time for that other storm to reveal water seeping through the bottom of the wall
Having more fun tonight with ida

I’ve been mopping up water in our garden level apartment for the past few hours. We have a sliding glass door and at the high point there were a few inches of water behind the glass, like an aquarium, and water was seeping in around it and under the front door. Not fun.

Queens Boulevard in Maspeth/Corona is a literal river at the moment. Bus fully flooded driving through, multiple cars stuck in the water. Absolutely insane. pic.twitter.com/LuSL9uWCEl

Hope ilxors and their abodes are ok.

We had a little water in one spot in our basement (which happens from time to time) and lost power for about 10 minutes. We've been on LI for 20 years and that was maybe the heaviest rain I can remember.

No flooding where I live in NJ, but NJ Transit trains aren’t currently running and I was supposed to go into NYC today for the first time in 19 months, something I was frankly a little apprehensive about, so… *happy shrug*

Friend of mine in NJ has shared pictures of a this place nearby which was hit by a tornado

Mostly good here, thanks, although haven’t gone out to check on downed trees yet and, more importantly, this is impinging on my aging parents thread activity.

8 dead in NYC, 7 in queens. A few of them not far from me. I live on the top of a hill in the 5th floor of a building so flooding is no issue for me luckily.

C was determined to drive into the city for an important pick-up today, with a pull-behind trailer, going to Gowanus. I tried to dissuade him but ultimately failed. Bon voyage!

Just emailed the dude I was supposed to be meeting and cancelled. Just as well; I'm right at the finish line on a *major* project and I'd rather be doing that anyway.

Looking at local facebook group and there are some crazy pictures from the storm last night. Our area is right on the LI Sound. Part of the road along the water collapsed and fell into the harbor. In another part of town, a cliff below some homes collapsed on to the beach below. Homes looked ok but could have to make some v v expensive (and not covered by insurance) repairs to shore up the cliff. Flooding everywhere.

Taliban! (PBKR), Thursday, 2 September 2021 13:15 (two years ago) link

Not NY, but photos from Philly of the Schuykill are insane.

Grew up in Philly (Roxborough) and saw many a big flood. But seeing this picture of cars on the Green Lane bridge with the Schuylkill this high seems unwise. I just don't get it. pic.twitter.com/AQEItIJhhE

Williamsburg, inland (near lorimer/metropolitan) and we didn’t sustain any flooding but things were certainly worse not far from here.
