Probably old news (I mean, it is) but these are all tons of fun and new to me:

Guitarist Mike left Destruction back in March, so now it's apparently Schmier and three youngsters. They've got a new song (with a video clearly filmed in isolation), and it's fine, I guess.

Good day for hipster black metal fans with new albums from both Deafheaven and Wolves in the Throne Room!
I have held back on listening to the advance tracks and will be checking them out for the first time shortly.

I've been playing the hell out of the Deafheaven all day. Any thoughts on the WIITR? I hope to get to it over the weekend.

#NowPlaying @BLASCREATION - Forsaken Dynasty

This came out a few years ago but was reissued by @hpgd666 and is my first exposure to the Nevada bangers. What separates it from other death-thrash troupes is a commitment to thrash that this hesher who came of age in the '80s loves. pic.twitter.com/L1hyK3NQEm

ooooh! gonna have to check that out.

Shaidar Logoff (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 20 August 2021 22:44 (two years ago) link

The Diskord absolutely pwns, everyone needs to check it out.

I enjoy the new Deafheaven, as expected seeing as I've never been entirely sold on their shrieks. Resolving the BM vs shoegazing tension in favour of the latter was the correct move.

As for the Wolves in the Throne Room, it's a solid outing as usual, but it certainly won't dislodge any of the albums they cut back in their prime.

lucubration
https://lucubration.bandcamp.com/album/aspiration-of-corrupted-ancient-blood

oksennus side project. primitive war metal with lots of noise and feedback. reminds me of corrupted in ways i’m having trouble articulating. love this stuff.

so now i finally threw this diskord record on and it sorta sounds like… prog death der kreuzen with lots of cowbell fills? not at all what i was expecting but i’m on board.

I already forgot about them at 12” and got absurdly excited that a new Sleep album was imminent.

The 'rona got Eric Wagner.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 23 August 2021 12:07 (two years ago) link

He was, again reportedly, unvaccinated.

pomenitul, Monday, 23 August 2021 12:45 (two years ago) link

gutted. I loved Eric's vocals. I fist-bumped him at The Earl in Atlanta while he made terrible jokes between songs.

it didn't have to happen, goddammit.

Duke Detain (Neanderthal), Monday, 23 August 2021 14:03 (two years ago) link

oh no :(

Pfunkboy AKA (Oor Neechy), Monday, 23 August 2021 14:56 (two years ago) link

Goddamit. Trouble made some of my favorite music. When I heard he got COVID IU was really nervous - he's a bigger dude, he chain smokes on stage so he probably smokes a lot off it as well... But I hoped I was worried about nothing. Fuck.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 23 August 2021 18:34 (two years ago) link

Ach, horrible news. The self-titled and Manic Frustration are two of my favourite records. RIP big man.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 24 August 2021 18:55 (two years ago) link

I always thought that Hooded Menace were good but fell beneath the threshold of greatness. The new one might pierce that glass ceiling but I need to listen a few more times. There's a lot of old school Paradise Lost here methinks and there's a greater emphasis on melody, both of which are catching me by surprise as I listen the first time.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Friday, 27 August 2021 18:21 (two years ago) link

The new Wormwitch that came out today is also quite good, lots of black metal meat to stick to one's bones!

The new Antediluvian is a minor masterpiece of ritual, Bataillean avant-metal:

Pleasantly surprised to see this reviewed in p4k even though the rating is rong:

pomenitul, Tuesday, 31 August 2021 12:21 (two years ago) link

Superdigging the new Fluisteraars. It's rough and raw but its a lot more than that as well. Love the variations in vocals. The little instrumental flourishes, the stretched out guitar parts.

black dice live ft. jerry garcia (rizzx), Tuesday, 31 August 2021 16:43 (two years ago) link

'Rough and raw' sounds like a step up from their previous record, which I personally found a little too lush, even though I still enjoyed it a great deal.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 31 August 2021 18:16 (two years ago) link

is it a metal album or a Wu-Tang album

Duke Detain (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 31 August 2021 18:31 (two years ago) link

'Verscheuring in de schemering' is an ODB cover iirc.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 31 August 2021 18:58 (two years ago) link

That Ænigmatum review makes me want to listen to the record again, see what I missed.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 31 August 2021 19:25 (two years ago) link

yeah, I also found it hard to get into, wish it had a little more groove or something to latch onto

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Tuesday, 31 August 2021 19:30 (two years ago) link

Theirs is a characteristically winding and unpredictable path but with a strong feel for melody throughout. I love all of their releases so far.

A 'brad' is technically a fir btw.

pomenitul, Friday, 3 September 2021 17:28 (two years ago) link

haven't listened to Portrait in like 8 or 9 years but I love the new one. trad heavy metal like this is my jam

Duke Detain (Neanderthal), Saturday, 4 September 2021 02:25 (two years ago) link

I tried and tried with the new Portrait, but although they push all the buttons that gets an old school nerd like me salivating, the album just comes up empty. They still have yet to top Crimen Laesae Majestatis Divinae.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 4 September 2021 03:00 (two years ago) link

that was the first one of theirs I heard!

Duke Detain (Neanderthal), Saturday, 4 September 2021 03:01 (two years ago) link

Fluisteraars album is v good.

Apparently Mastodon are piecing together the cover for a new album on various social media accounts, Twitter is the only one I'm on at the moment so I can just see the piece they posted there. Assuming the full announcement will be out shortly.

Duke Detain (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 7 September 2021 16:31 (two years ago) link

Apparently? Twitter says Facebook has another piece and mailing list members got an email with a third piece. Instagram has another piece that reveals a portion of the album title to be Hushed and.

tempted to create a fake Mastodon account and fudge the fourth reveal

NJ dissonant death metal band Replicant's second album, Malignant Reality, is out today. RIYL Ulcerate, other doomy/creepy-crawly DM bands with prominent avant/prog elements.

really dig the new mastodon single, encouraged by the album length

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Friday, 10 September 2021 20:21 (two years ago) link

Agreed on both counts, it's good and I like the idea of an 88-minute double album from them.
