A black work colleague once told me that one of the coaches at the Town youth set-up was a real nasty, racist piece of work + once called him an unreliable, lazy fucker in a snarling rant with spit flying everywhere after he missed an away youth fixture through no fault of his own. In the end his mum pulled him out of there over a racist incident that he didn't expand on. I imagine the Chelsea set-up was perhaps a more extreme case of that era, but not completely unusual.
