Posted it in the outbreak thread too, but ugly scene in the parking lot after that meeting as well:

googling 8th Army was indeed a mess. Historic hits re Britain and Australia, current hits for Korea, but also a couple for the US Army that didn't seem particularly weird. Still, can't figure it out.

I'm reminded of the Scharpling & Wurster sketch about a guy thwarting a robbery:
Wurster as Brock Puehk, local hero: "He said he was goinng to turn this place into a car wash."
Scharpling: "What does that mean?"
Wurster: "I don't know, but it sounds bad!"

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 11 August 2021 17:23 (two years ago) link

it really does remind me of speaking in tongues, though. every week, someone would lose it and start going "SHY-lye-lye, don-DON-SHY-ly-ly, Jesus shy-lo-FIE, lo. FIE-loe, Jesus, shun-SHONE-fa-lye". then they'd finally stop and there would be this low-murmuring of prayer from all the adults in the room, lots of thanking the lord. then a few seconds later, the same weird fucking old guy, the former pastor there from years earlier, before i started attending, would "interpret" the message for the rest of us. at the top of his lungs he would be like "MY SON HAS BEEN SENT TO THE EARTH TO CLEANSE THE WORLD OF EVIL. I SAYETH TO YOU, ALL OF THE WORLD WILL BE JUDGED, AND MY SON WILL BE THE JUDGE, I SAY UNTO YOU, AMEN, AMEN". and then the adults would all keep praying all around the room and say "amen". what a message the holy spirit had delivered, what a moment. and this would play out every week! a different message, but always an obviously fake tongue, and always with the old preacher translating to some complete bullshit lol

Read between the lines Zach (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 11 August 2021 17:26 (two years ago) link

but my point is, i guess, if you're an adult in that group (the 8th army group, white pentecostals in the woods, Q is joe biden, the fellas), you better say "amen" after the really big dumb thing happens. you don't let the old preacher perform a goddamn MIRACLE in your midst and not say "amen" afterward, no matter how fucking transparently pathetically staged that miracle was, a miracle on cue. if don't say Amen you don't come back the next week. i guess for those school board people and the 8th army and the holy spirit, it's the same. all the adults around you cheer, so you cheer too

That is absolutely, horrifically tragic. QAnon influence might be tangentially involved, but anyone who could do that their own (or anyone's) children is just plain mentally ill.

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 21:55 (two years ago) link

sometimes the price of faith is appearing to mentally ill to everyone else

Genesis 22
Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

There's a conspiracy guy online whose blog I used to read occasionally fifteen years ago or so, in part because even among "crazy internet conspiracy dudes" he stuck out as being especially deranged. Out of curiosity I googled him earlier this year, and he still maintains an online presence and is still on a daily basis predicting IMMINENT takeover by the satanic nephilim reptoids/NWO who are going to hurl us all into FEMA camps. He's been predicting this unceasingly for almost two decades now.

Part of me is surprised that he hasn't harmed anyone yet -- he would regularly take pictures of people at stores or other public places and post them on his blog, insisting that they are reptoids who live to eat babies, etc. He was always anti-vax, but now of course even more rabidly so, post-Covid. Back in the day he was I guess more of a generic chemtrails and anti-govt conspiracy guy, but somewhere along the way he became a Trump person, and fundamentalist Christian, not to mention intensely racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, trans-hating, misogynistic, in a way that I don't remember him being before. Like, just clicking all the boxes in terms of being a shitty person. Oh, and he's a flat-earther.

He also sells stuff and begs for money so it's not easy to tell how much is serious mental illness and how much is all part of a grift. But mostly I just feel like it must be incredibly exhausting to feel like ninety percent of phenomena in the modern world is evidence of intensely sinister goings-on. He is morbidly obsessed with "evil" in a way that would give the most extreme caricature of a black or death metal guy pause. But his schtick is so unrelentingly shitty that his personality wards off any empathy you might have for whatever sickness of soul he is dealing with. Even if one were somehow okay with swallowing all of his gross ideological stuff, he is so obnoxiously sanctimonious -- constantly hinting at how special and gifted he is for being able to see how things really are... anyway, reading about that California guy reminded me of him, and how insanely mainstreamed some of those beliefs have become. The guy I'm talking of seemed like such an extreme outlier when I first encountered him, but now some of his stuff is practically doctrinaire Q crap. And again, I'm almost surprised that he hasn't harmed anyone (at least physically?) in the intervening years since I first came across his blog.

Yeah, if you read his vax screeds not only are they insanely dumb, but also ever-changing and self-contradicting. And sadly I have pieced together enough of his backstory, that it's easy to see how in that interview and on his blog(s) he is constantly changing the narrative of his life. His bullshittery is lazily inconsistent and then some. Though I do believe his story about being shot in the neck by the Feds because he was exposing the truth about chemtrails.

dell (del), Thursday, 12 August 2021 01:24 (two years ago) link

Or throat/fema camps, rather...

In the late 90s he researched and wrote an illustrated and well-documented expose of the then-new concentration camp and mass execution facility network that is in every state and province of North America and on the morning that he was to take the manuscript to a publisher he was shot through the throat by a CIA sniper and quickly drowned in his own blood in front of his family.

His wife got him to a hospital in time to bring him back from the dead but the hammer came down, then, and he was stripped of his horse ranch in the mountains above Pasadena, the successful chain of computer stores he established and ran which were employee-owned, and all of his fancy possessions. His bank accounts and other real assets were frozen, of course, because none of that belonged to him; they were just on loan from his masters.

His wife had to go to work to support the family because every time DB applied for a job the FBI visited the prospective employer and claimed he was an incorrigible felon and would likely harm someone or steal from the company.

The 8th Army thing might be a convoluted reference to the 82nd Airborne?

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 12 August 2021 13:07 (two years ago) link

Well, that's a division; an army is a different level of organization.

The U.S. Eighth Army is apparently the only U.S. army that is still in the field (in Korea), so it's possible that a military-minded crazyperson would equate that with readiness for deployment or extra vigilance. Like, us armchair patriots are mobilized for action, and therefore we share spiritual kinship with the most active of the active military.

subpoena colada (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 12 August 2021 14:03 (two years ago) link

Historically there are other possibilities, too:

Eighth Army may refer to:

Eighth Route Army, a Chinese Communist unit that fought against the Japanese during World War II
Eighth Army (France)
8th Army (German Empire), a unit in World War I
8th Army (Russian Empire), a unit in World War I
8th Army (Wehrmacht), a German unit in World War II
Eighth Army (Italy)
Japanese Eighth Area Army
Eighth Army (Ottoman Empire)
8th Guards Army (Russia)
8th Army (RSFSR), a unit of the Red Army during the Russian Civil War
8th Army (Soviet Union)
8th Guards Army (Soviet Union)
Eighth Army (United Kingdom)
Eighth United States Army

I think it has to be rapture-related, in the guy’s mind, and he made it up on the spot because it sounded right. Sometimes evangelicals like to think they’re being literally guided by god, that he’s speaking through them, etc, which leads people to just start...doing things...with the thought that the things they do are temporarily divinely inspired

Read between the lines Zach (Karl Malone), Thursday, 12 August 2021 15:19 (two years ago) link

Maybe that’s one reason Evangelicals love Trump, he’s actually speaking Glossolalia, but it sounds like nonsense English to us heretics.
