My own feelings were mixed on it, but I think that most people on this board would appreciate David Lowery's The Green Knight, currently in theaters. Gorgeous photography and production, great cast, often unnerving feel, an intriguing moral fable. Very deliberate and slow-paced, which works at some points, not-so-much at others.

Thanks for the recommendation. The wordless finale was very well done and mostly redeemed the film.

The moral and psychological torment which should have burdened Gawain after choosing to kill the Green Knight would have been far richer material to mine than all the witchcraft stuff which occupied the middle act. He sealed his own fate when he chose to kill rather than inflict a lesser wound. Realistically, a person would be tormented by that action in hindsight. That introspection was sadly missing in the main character, and because of that, Gawain was not someone I cared about much.

I think the movie is deliberately making the point that Gawain is very shallow and unreflective, eager for glory.

I think the source material is so rich and so ambiguous though, that someone could make an entirely different film exploring your angle (which I hadn’t thought of actually so thanks!).
