Hoppe sucks

they literally talked about the PK match against Mexico from two months ago earlier in the match, then moments ago one of the announcers mentions there's only ever been one PK shootout between Mexico and the US, and references some 1996 Copa America match.

these fucking guys.

wow. too bad it had to be an ATL United player, but nice, Miles!

was a nice visual, all the bench players swarming Robinson after the goal there

yeah i wasn't even gonna watch if it went to PKs.

I just want to say that I'm fine watching games in Spanish, but I'm in a broadcast TV dead zone and can't pick up Telemundo. And all the same, there is a World Cup™ qualifier on and FS1 is showing fucking Rudy.

I continue to be very self-satisfied about my "FUCK AO" stance

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Thursday, 3 November 2022 16:43 (one year ago) link

I never knew a lot about them, found that their fans sometimes operated on the fringe of acceptability at matches I went to where they were there, but THIS = "fuck no, fire board member immediately and suspend AO for a year".

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Thursday, 3 November 2022 16:52 (one year ago) link

Perhaps not surprisingly there's a vein of very jingoistic tendencies in AO alongside a much broader history of bigotry against Mexicans especially

And now?

Soda Stereo Total (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 3 December 2022 22:31 (one year ago) link

Think this was about their level.

Very interested in who the next coach is. I was never a complete hater but even if you go with an American there are better options than Berhalter.

Also anticipating who steps up: Paxton Aaronson, Pepi, Tillman, Slonina, Busio, and more including names we don't know yet.

Goalkeeping seems sorted after some absurd (for the US) uncertainty. Between Turner, Horvath, and Steffen things are pretty solid there.

Also there's the what if factor. Several players who likely would have been on the roster were injured. Chris Richards in particular could have been starting at CB, where they weren't really hurting until the final game where Netherlands let them have the ball and then picked off passes for counterattacks.

Overall, Adams, Musah, McKennie could probably be the midfield for another 8 years. Pulisic and Weah are solid on the wings for another cycle, Reyna who knows (but hopeful), and Dest/Jedi are also very good.

Finishing? Who knows. Ferreira and Wright both were top 3-ish in their respective leagues and had only a fluke goal between them to show for it in Qatar. Sargent has been doing well for Norwich but didn't show much either.

I have gotten more into this stuff bc I have a close friend who works with the team in a non technical role. Between the Klinsmann, Arena II, Sarachan, and now Berhalter eras it's a lot to take in. I think they're as good now as ever, with some growth, experience at clubs, and development of other spots on the field, who knows what could happen in 26 on concacaf turf?

Gotta be killers in comparison to today, though.

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Saturday, 3 December 2022 23:36 (one year ago) link

Oh and Brendan Aaronson too, midfield is apparently the new strongest spot instead of GK

The dearth of “in their prime” players due to the lost generation that didn’t qualify in 2018 was a glaring issue. Jordan Morris, veteran presence? Lol

— Jeff Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle) January 3, 2023

apparently ppl hate him enough to go all oppo research on him, kinda fucked up

I think this was a good way to handle it… I don't necessarily want him to be the coach anymore but it has nothing to do with this

yeah wow. it seems like us soccer isn't moving forward with him, but that this is not the reason why

sault bae (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 21:13 (one year ago) link

I can't stand oppo research like that because it's never about the victim, it's about opportunism. no matter what they claim to the contrary.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 21:34 (one year ago) link

I don't give a fuck about Berhalter being ousted, nor this being public knowledge, but I do object to basically using victims as pawns.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 January 2023 21:35 (one year ago) link

The wildest part about this: Berhalter and Claudio Reyna went to high school together. They played on the USMNT together. Reyna's wife, Danielle Egan, went to college and was best friends with Rosalind Berhalter. I seriously think the Reyna's leaked this bc of Gio...

— bones (@thekleschprince) January 3, 2023

Who tf knows at this point but this would be so fucked. USSF is a relatively small and tight knit org.

gio might prove too talented to kneecap him for his whole career but i would guess he won't be with the team for much of the next cycle

this is typical peak USMNT brain here

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 18:29 (one year ago) link

obviously not excusing what Gregg did to his wife back in college, which even he has acknowledged happened, but it seems like it was a private matter that they handled between the two of them, and now it's become public record (quite possibly against her wishes) and purely for the purpose of being angry about a son's playing time.

that's gonna make it real easy to hire the next coach.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 18:31 (one year ago) link

it would make berhalter or whoever the next coach is look just about as bad to retaliate against gio for the actions of his father (to say nothing of the nose-to-spite-the-face aspect of benching one of your best players when you have like... 5 good players). but i bet it will be awkward!

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 4 January 2023 18:32 (one year ago) link

I mean, it wouldn't be fair, necessarily, but I could see the next coach be reluctant to call him up altogether. easier to say "he didn't fit my current squad design" than to call him up and not play him and get accused of 'benching' Gio.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 18:34 (one year ago) link

that may happen but it's not like when france excommunicated benzema and still is france. the US can't really afford to just be tossing one of its only world class players overboard, so i'm sure everyone will get over it

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 4 January 2023 18:38 (one year ago) link

in any event, the ussf will prob just re-sign berhalter now to avoid being sued. so congrats to the reynas

u-9 AYSO morelike imho, lmao

Gio Reyna is hardly world class tbh, he's very talented but also very young and potentially injury-prone. He did some stupid shit during the World Cup and that was dealt with—should have been the end of it. I imagine he will be back as soon as the next cycle starts in earnest, barring injury.

Honestly I see this as much more damaging to Claudio Reyna's career (currently sporting director with Austin FC, previously with NYCFC, etc). Like I said, the world of the USSF is small. Actions like this are relatively easy to track down and people have long memories. Eric Wynalda rocked the boat a lot and has basically been blacklisted; it has happened to others as well. (Not saying that is right, but it is reality.)

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 19:15 (one year ago) link

Also there's nothing saying they need to fill the manager position immediately. Dave Sarachan was the interim coach after Arena was fired and that lasted most of a year iirc.
