I'm hoping the game-within-a-game is rock paper scissors just to see Ginger's face

boxedjoy, Friday, 30 July 2021 19:49 (two years ago) link

I think another reason for scrapping the sewing/design challenges is that they are a lot harder to edit into the production narratives. You can make it seem like eg someone's jokes have bombed by using the rattlesnake sound effect and a cut to Michelle Visage looking stony, whereas you can't really disguise a good or a bad costume the same way.

boxedjoy, Friday, 30 July 2021 19:51 (two years ago) link

And another queen down. But Trinity reacting to Tina was great.

STILL nothing about this game within a game and I’m wondering if my joke last week was…right? Nothing given away in the teaser for the next episode either and after that it’s just four competitors.

I've become mildly obsessed with the Pit Stop, specifically the tea you get in the comments. It feeds my confirmation bias something terrible.

trishyb, Friday, 6 August 2021 08:37 (two years ago) link

I don't watch the pit stop religiously, by any stretch, but caught a few recent ones for all-stars 6, Monique and Violet ones were fun. Trixie is such a personable host, tho, I feel she genuinely loves her sisters art . Her uncanny ability to talk to you, the viewer, like she's your best friend from waybaack gets me all the time. I also love her ability to be very funny without needing to be really shady or rude.

Swanswans, Saturday, 7 August 2021 10:21 (two years ago) link

Yeah, she gets a lot of flak from haters because of her RuPaul-style endless hustle, but (like RuPaul herself, I'd argue) the hustle is successful because she's so funny and likeable.

trishyb, Saturday, 7 August 2021 10:31 (two years ago) link

yeah, that's interesting because I do think Trixie is the true drag daughter of Ru, she's the one who left the show ( after a disappointing, middling 1st stint on the show, remember) but crucially took on board and implemented every damn thing ru says to all the girls, in terms of capitalising on the fame and getting on it with the business side...hunty shebettaworkdherassoff#

Trixie haters can take a jump, Trixie is a sweetheart, a very rich sweetheart and it's pleasing to see the wealth has only made her more confidently Trixie and more able to be shiny star she is

Swanswans, Saturday, 7 August 2021 12:18 (two years ago) link

Yeah Trixie managing multiple brands of whatever is going on as well as keeping the partnership with Katya going even after the thoroughly well documented mental break the latter had, I mean...it's remarkable mini-empire stuff at this point. (I remain intrigued that that they ended up with their podcast NOT being part of the massively MoM/Forever Dog family tree.)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 August 2021 21:06 (two years ago) link

also vaguest shades of night of a thousand madonna kimonos in these fkn warhol pop art dresses WTF CMON

Yeah the fact that none of the judges mentioned it was baffling.

Kylie being secretly hilarious has been one of the many great revelations of this season, as is her looking back at the mirror/camera after voting to check out herself out again.

Action Bell (Leee), Saturday, 7 August 2021 22:06 (two years ago) link

Yeah she's amazing value throughout.

Drag Race Holland has also kicked off its new season -- seems like a good bunch of queens, sewing challenge next week. They've rejigged the prizes -- they're getting money now as well, plus apparently the big bonus is getting one's own stage at this thing next year:

https://www.milkshakefestival.com/

And in cross-branding fun, the founder of the festival will be the new Michelle Visage type for the season, I gather. (Pity, kinda liked the woman who they had last year in that role but hey.)

Honestly once again, to use the phrase from Race Chaser, Trinity understood the assignment on that runway.

i carry the torch for disco inauthenticity (Eric H.), Sunday, 8 August 2021 16:16 (two years ago) link

Okay so we finally have…some idea of what is going on. Like a round robin lip sync to the death or what?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 August 2021 02:19 (two years ago) link

that challenge was a) dumb and b) weird

and rajah seemed v low energy in that lipsync tho maybe it was just cameron pulling cartwheels that made it seem so idk

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 August 2021 06:20 (two years ago) link

but even cameron wasnt at her normal level

it was v meh

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 August 2021 06:46 (two years ago) link

Justice for Charli XCX, she deserved a better episode.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 August 2021 14:42 (two years ago) link

agree!

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 August 2021 15:19 (two years ago) link

It was not great, but as a loud, fat, sometimes obnoxious, underachiever myself, I really felt for Eureka this week. Also, once the stupid googly eye glasses were off, Ra'jah's makeup and hair were just incredible. Worthy of a Donna Summer album cover.

trishyb, Friday, 13 August 2021 16:53 (two years ago) link

yeah i was sad to see Eureka go, i have grown to love her so much more since her first drag race appearance, she is a lot but she has such a beautiful heart. i loved the extra time with her in the workroom after her elimination etc

rajah looked fkn incredible

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 August 2021 17:11 (two years ago) link

The Charli song didn't really lend itself to being an epic lipsync -- midtempo and no huge climax. Was that the first time that we saw Kameron lipsync without throwing in the splits?

wildleee questionable baking substitutions (Leee), Saturday, 14 August 2021 22:15 (two years ago) link

just caught first few episodes of drag race Holland season 2, fun cast despite 90% of the cast bringing the drag races stock phrases hard, worth watching for the intriguing 'the countess', 2nd episode **spoiler** makes incredible couture outfit in a thrift design challenge from literally 2pieces of material and a plastics crocodile

Swanswans, Sunday, 15 August 2021 09:59 (two years ago) link

Yeah good episode and she seems pretty sharp. It’s a nice mix of folks and I think after we get rid of one more the various individual personalities will get even sharper (usual progression of course).

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 15 August 2021 14:46 (two years ago) link

caught an episode of a show called Drag S.O.S. yesterday. I think it's a nice addition to the drag verse, a low budget reality show hosted by some fun, quirky queen's (including a bio-queen) from the NW /Manchester area of the UK. Astina from dragrace UK s02 featured in this episode. It was very affecting and shows a lot of promise for looks, heart and silly capers.

Swanswans, Wednesday, 18 August 2021 11:08 (two years ago) link

Phew, Race Chaser went IN on the Drag Tots challenge. Rightly.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 August 2021 14:04 (two years ago) link

i was never in danger of watching that show but hoooo boy that was some sub-2005 flash animation biz there

also all these challenges where they have to create a character and have this awkward voice over are the same? "my name is (x), I come from the land of (x), my superpower is (x)" yadda yadda

i really hope anyone but ginger wins at this point. every character she does is literally just... ginger. and not even much of a voice change. she's not even funny!

clouds, Wednesday, 18 August 2021 17:29 (two years ago) link

Kylie's got the edit in her favor; Trinity is still my favorite.

i carry the torch for disco inauthenticity (Eric H.), Wednesday, 18 August 2021 17:33 (two years ago) link

she's been okay. given how good her lipsyncs were in s6 i expected more. also she seems to have zero self-awareness?

i want rajah to win but i'd be equally fine with kylie

clouds, Wednesday, 18 August 2021 17:45 (two years ago) link

And now we know what it was. Kinda fun, actually! (I'm still wondering if they BOTH come back next week.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 August 2021 19:24 (two years ago) link

yeah i enjoyed that

Silky’s comment that she looked like “baby Al Sharpton” in her Barbie Girl male-side drag (in untucked) cracked me the fuck up

that performance alone was price of admission

i got very props-weary with her but to her credit she understood the assignment ie entertain Ru

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 20 August 2021 19:45 (two years ago) link

I thought that episode was a dreadful, indulgent slog, designed to give Silky a nice edit because the fans don't adore her like Ru does, with her coasting by on gimmicks to disguise some dreadful lip-synching. The way it was maybe 20 minutes of entertainment padded out to an hour was punishing, and Carson should never be allowed to give feedback on an attacking or presenting challenge again.

boxedjoy, Friday, 20 August 2021 20:10 (two years ago) link

Yeah there were draggy moments (if you will) and I do wonder if the others were given any sort of 'you can bring props' guidance or not. But the "Heartbreaker" matchup with Jan and the "Since U Been Gone" one with Eureka both produced some killer performances. And I did like the 'baby Al Sharpton' comment.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 August 2021 20:20 (two years ago) link

akeria made the right choice, didn’t she

scanner darkly, Saturday, 21 August 2021 01:24 (two years ago) link

also, why did they save better songs for the game within a game

scanner darkly, Saturday, 21 August 2021 01:26 (two years ago) link

I KNOW RIGHT

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 21 August 2021 02:28 (two years ago) link

I thought that episode was a dreadful, indulgent slog, designed to give Silky a nice edit because the fans don't adore her like Ru does,

You can kind of see this happen on Strictly Come Dancing, too, when someone they're bringing out on the tour with them (cough, couch, Jason Donovan, cough) doesn't seem to be connecting with the fans in the way the producers hope (and isn't dancing as well as the producers hope) so they drag out absolutely every trick they've got in order to make people buy tickets to see them on the tour.

That said, I do like Silky, so this was not as bad as I initially thought it was going to be. It was still pretty bad, though, and A'keria was right not to participate.

trishyb, Saturday, 21 August 2021 08:30 (two years ago) link

As in, I like Silky, I thought the gimmicks were funny, but she is a terrible lipsyncher, and the idea of putting the "worst" people up against each other for a whole hour was just tedious.

trishyb, Saturday, 21 August 2021 08:31 (two years ago) link

And after all that…I liked today’s episode a lot! The Pit Stop was also amazing.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 27 August 2021 05:06 (two years ago) link

yeah i enjoyed it too - this week was ~quite~ the journey !

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 27 August 2021 05:57 (two years ago) link

Silky's exit was great. Somehow her slightly drunk-seeming shouting reminded me of Johnny Vegas.

Delighted to see Nicole Byer on the Pit Stop. Love her.

trishyb, Friday, 27 August 2021 13:27 (two years ago) link

I totally agreed with the Pit Stoppers that Ginger's monologue was so rehearsed you couldn't believe a word of it.

trishyb, Friday, 27 August 2021 13:46 (two years ago) link

Sure, axe the dancer right before the big choreography finale. Whatever.

i carry the torch for disco inauthenticity (Eric H.), Saturday, 28 August 2021 01:34 (two years ago) link

Right result, fantastic final lipsync looks and performances, but oh my god that country song was an absolute mess. And the speeches! It was like when they ramble on to save themselves from the chop on The Apprentice.

trishyb, Thursday, 2 September 2021 19:51 (two years ago) link

Yeah good with the end result but Ru basically going "Why can't *I* have an "Old Town Road"" is like the *worst* thirstiness.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 September 2021 21:28 (two years ago) link

i demand Kylie Sonique’s lipsync outfit immediately i want it i love it i neeed it in my liiiiife she looked like a studio54 rave-dinosaur

and eureka’s bob mackie inspired runway was allllll the way up, i loved it

i love them all tbh

this was a way better season than i ever exected & the winner is exactly who it should be <3

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 3 September 2021 05:45 (two years ago) link

Indeed, after it seeming flat at the season announcement it all went pretty entertainingly!

And now a short break but Holland continues on and soon...
