Guitar Center had this Squier Bass VI on clearance for some reason (they're out of stock everywhere), it needs some upgrades (the vibrato is crap, needs an entirely new nut) but it sounds so good playing like it a big low guitar.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Tuesday, 17 August 2021 06:20 (two years ago) link

That is a huge win, I remember the first time I tried out a VI and all my crappy riffs sounded like vibrating thunder. A good looking one too! Sometimes the grain on the Squier bursts look a bit off but that one is NICE.

I have that bass and was lucky to get it second-hand with Seymour Duncan pickups installed. Added LeBella flats to it but needed to hand it over to a proper technician to get it setup properly, they're known for being a bit fiddly. He told me that there's not much that can be done about the tremolo arm, it's just not that amazing

interesting in that clip he mentions colorful sparkle drumkit finishes as the inspiration for that color

I got my first ever dreadnought acoustic a few weeks back. I've been playing for 30 years but have only ever played OM size and sometimes even smaller. Was convinced dreadnoughts were too big for me. I ended up trading a guitar for this dread and i am in love. It's got a terrified top, something I've never coveted, but goodness does it sound amazing.

Duke, Saturday, 21 August 2021 18:48 (two years ago) link

I ordered a Descendant Vibrato (from the guy who makes Swope Guitars) for my Jaguar so whenever that arrives I'll transfer the Jaguar's vibrato over to the Bass VI. Staytrem bridge probably won't arrive for months, sounds like they're backed up forever.

I have to start saving up for better monitor speakers and build some acoustic panels, my room can't handle the Bass VI thunder.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Saturday, 21 August 2021 18:57 (two years ago) link

I learned to play guitar on my dad's dreadnought and have always loved it's deep tone

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Saturday, 21 August 2021 18:59 (two years ago) link

Ha. I learned to play on my dad's 1970s Yamaha F-15, which is an OM size. Maybe that's were I got to like that size. It was playing a friend's dread that convinced me that actually I'm physically able to play a guitar of this size, and wow does that have an amazing bass sound.

Duke, Saturday, 21 August 2021 19:06 (two years ago) link

Anyone have a travel size acoustic that they like that can reliably be carried on a plane?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 26 August 2021 03:52 (two years ago) link

I carry my mandolin on planes all the time. (Not helpful, I know, sorry)

I'm a sucker for old Yamaha electrics, and I'm not gonna buy this but I swear I look at the listing every day.

I am still in the painful beginner stages of being able to play, but just bought a Gretsch Streamliner on a bit of a whim after initially trying out a couple of rental Epiphones. It’s pretty big, but hopefully not a mistake.

Same as this one. https://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gretsch-guitars-g2410tg-streamliner-hollow-body-single-cut-with-bigsby

Kim, Thursday, 26 August 2021 17:47 (two years ago) link

Gretsch are such a cool look. I had a Gretsch Electromatic Jet for a while and liked it, traded it for an acoustic i fell in love with. based on my experience, taking it to a shop for a setup would really do wonders

lol Duke - in my household, all the guitars are terrified (and rightly so, given the drunk adults and Sharpie-wielding toddlers)

love that gretsch

pure rim rest (Spottie), Thursday, 26 August 2021 18:17 (two years ago) link

The affordable nu-Gretsches I played felt awkward to me, but that's probably just personal preference, nothing against them.

I have been coveting one of these, but I haven't pulled the trigger precisely because I suspect it would be a lot of trouble. Especially since I'd rather put higher output pickups in but then I'd have to probably plug the holes for feedback. If I ever get "fuck you money" I'll buy one just for the look and have it customized to the hilt.

There are a couple of models in the Electromatic and Streamline lines (including the one Kim linked - congrats!) with thinner bodies. ime even though it's only a quarter or half-inch depending it makes a noticeable difference.

xxp the SA-15D isn't *intrinsically* a mess, Yamaha make wonderful quality instruments and guitars are no exception, even in the late 60s. However this one was not treated well. It should look like this:
https://i.imgur.com/QrFuoW0.jpg
but when I got it, it looked like this:
https://i.imgur.com/0fMORcL.jpg
so I've ordered a bunch of parts and set to work:
https://i.imgur.com/F0A4MAX.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/oT795fa.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/P4MgIPC.jpg
but we've got a long long way to go. Managed to source tuners, pickups, pickup rings, a bridge ... the refinishing will be the worst though.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 26 August 2021 21:58 (two years ago) link

Is it a set neck? Hope it's not warped if it is (not that finding a replacement for a bolt-on would actually be "easy"). But assuming it's not, a resurrection of a guitar this cool should be a fun project.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 26 August 2021 23:05 (two years ago) link

Well, it’s a bolt neck … but someone has glued it in with some unremovable epoxy kinda thing. Didn’t even occur to me that anyone would be that stupid, but here we are.
But I am looking forward to the end product if I can get it right.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 26 August 2021 23:44 (two years ago) link

So today I bought a new Gibson Flying V (to be delivered later). This is the guitar I’ve always coveted. Once a sales guy at Guitar Center told me it’s a bad choice for a first guitar, but that made me want one even more. Can’t wait to get it. It’s the model with a natural finish.

Josefa, Friday, 27 August 2021 00:17 (two years ago) link

I’ve heard people claim that the classical-style seated position of a Flying V is actually easier on beginners’ hands and wrists?

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 27 August 2021 00:43 (two years ago) link

great fretboard access too

call all destroyer, Friday, 27 August 2021 00:48 (two years ago) link

Yes to both! I’m sort of counting on that. I may not try to play heavy rock right away, and playing certain other styles that way won’t look as funny so I’m not worried.

Josefa, Friday, 27 August 2021 00:59 (two years ago) link

I have a Gretsch Electromatic. I love playing it but the components are pretty weak. My volume knob needs to be tightened occasionally and I replaced the bridge with a Tru-Arc. Probably should just get the thing set up professionally

I think an offset telecaster with the aesthetics of a PRS would be the ugliest guitar that I can imagine that wasn't specifically designed with ugliness in mind.

current wishlist:

– 70s guild s-100 (would take one of the 90s re-issues too)
– ~70s Tele Deluxe natural
– SG standard, any year really, any color but cherry
– Jazzmaster - would love a j mascis or troy van luween sig model

i made a purchase and knocked one off my wish list (kinda):

the 70s tele deluxes are going for 4k+ at the moment but i found this 1990 MIJ '75 vintage reissue for much less.

Thought it was cool that Bill Collings was giving Kristin Hersh her acoustics until he died. All that dentist money was being put to good use.
