all genres matter

Randy Newman is a musical garbage machine.

so is his ass

Here's a controversial music opinion: labeling any genre as "fucking garbage" is as prejudiced as saying any cultural or ethnic group is "fucking garbage". There's garbage in every genre, yet none of them deserve that label.

While it might be correct on some level to call it prejudiced, I would defend use of hyperbole to vent strong opinions on a music forum without fear of it being compared to ethnic slurs. I would even go further and defend dismissing certain cultures as "fucking garbage" without that being compared to doing the same for an ethnic group. Difference in my mind being that a culture is something a person chooses to be a part of.

xposts Although he was the musical inspiration for that time my brother came to town and we spent the whole weekend inventing songs for my imaginary Newman Sings Newman album (where every tune is from the perspective of Jerry Seinfeld's nemesis). Pretty sure we nearly made a friend of mine pee his pants. Good times.

Otherwise: musical garbage machine.

Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:40 (two years ago) link

Except there's a strong history of those genres that are commonly targeted and specifically dismissed wholesale as being ones started by and intended for historically marginalized groups - disco, rap, jazz being three prime contenders. It's pretty hard to extract that history when someone dismisses the entirety of a genre as "fucking garbage".

you know what's fucking garbage? this thread :)

rob, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:44 (two years ago) link

Does that fully count as a 'music opinion', though?

pomenitul, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:45 (two years ago) link

no sadly, it's more of an "i love music opinion"

chords are bad

making splashes at Dan Flashes (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:47 (two years ago) link

but cords are good, those should come back imho

Melody trumps harmony. Discuss.

Feel like I get that vibe from pop fans that declare superiority over "lol indie".

However I have no examples just vague memories of comments here on ilx over the years.

Actually, what did that even mean? Maybe I just guessed.

Everyone on ILX declares superiority over "lol indie".

Is this an actual controversy? (genuine q)

rob, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:56 (two years ago) link

i believe geir hongro wrote a dissertation on this, spread out across many posts

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:58 (two years ago) link

Pretty sure Geir was hot for harmony.

Wouldn't disgrace a Michael Jackson (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 18:59 (two years ago) link

but let's not forget melody. melody too. both very important in music

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:02 (two years ago) link

somehow i read thousands of words on this, and i don't remember a single thing about it! seriously! it was time well spent

it sounds like a physics problem

Not saying you're necessarily doing this, but this argument is used to support some really nasty stuff. (Unless you're talking about "toxic gaming culture" or something like that.)

Is this an actual controversy? (genuine q)

It was back during Rousseau's time (he legit argued melody is superior to harmony in hopes of pwning Rameau).

pomenitul, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:08 (two years ago) link

I just don’t really get the idea of qualitatively comparing them. playing notes one at a time is better than playing notes simultaneously? Uh ok

brimstead, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:11 (two years ago) link

well this is way over my head lol

rhythm > melody > harmony >>>>>> this thread

bezos did the dub (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:15 (two years ago) link

Rousseau defined melody as a spontaneous, archaic outpouring that comes straight from the heart, and harmony as a post hoc academic construct that cannot but result in artificial compositions. At least it made sense to him.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:16 (two years ago) link

Reading about Rousseau v. Rameau plus the Querelle des boufons, and I'm glad I didn't post my "there's no such thing as controversial music opinions" post

Songs about ontology recapitulate songs about philogeny.

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:18 (two years ago) link

Not controversial enough imo.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:19 (two years ago) link

lol I don’t agree with Rousseau necessarily but I see where he’s coming from

brimstead, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:26 (two years ago) link

It's a good starting point if you're looking to deconstruct the classical Western harmonic system. Whether it applies to harmony altogether is a different story.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:28 (two years ago) link

perhaps rousseau's aversion to harmony would've influenced him to echo pom's famous "pet sounds is bad" controp

bezos did the dub (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:37 (two years ago) link

I feel like if I could have gotten Rousseau high and played him The Byrds "Natural Harmony" the course of music history would have changed

rob, Tuesday, 27 July 2021 19:39 (two years ago) link

make sure you don't accidentally play him "mind gardens" instead

Harmony roolz. Jejune lyrics, cloying melodies and insecure quasi castrato vox from Pleasantville do not.

The only important thing these days is rhythm and melody.

Jejune lyrics, cloying melodies and insecure quasi castrato vox from Pleasantville

this is the standard line on the album at this point isn’t it, as in this is exactly what makes it so great

i can’t stand this dark side of suburbia type of shit. which it’s probably only an accidental example of anyway
