I wonder if both cultural norms, and the fact that higher-pitched voices have more prominence to the ear, conspire to make this more of an issue for female singers

yes. and see also genre -- listen to Camaraderie's reverb version --

this sounds more like the average karaoke rendition of a song than anything to me.

my ex sang like this

key hint is how she sometimes does wind up in key through pure chance.

yeah, where the person is singing at/near the top of her range (or psychologically induced range), as opposed to nearer the middle where the singer will feel more confident/comfortable to sing a wider range of notes

Would be totally willing to read and compare microtonal transcriptions:

like this was the main aesthetic similarity between this and Rebecca Black -- the one note-ness -- though Brand's voice is capable of more overtones and expressiveness so she sings variants (or microtones as you will) of the same one.

Sorry, first link was meant to start at 12:15, second at 4:34.xp

yeah with my ex it was always Celine Dion, when she should have been singing alto-y country.

Ozzy sounded way worse than Brand on his last two tours w/ Sabbath btw. like...way....way....worse.

do you miss her?

sarahell, Sunday, 25 July 2021 18:25 (two years ago) link

almost like "I'm used to this song in its former key but the band lowered the key to help me, but i'm still singing it in the original key" bad

xpost I don't miss the Celine Dion

Scott Weiland was having a lot of trouble when I saw him play a few months before his death, he was missing notes that weren't even especially high in his range.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 25 July 2021 19:10 (two years ago) link

I would definitely rather listen to Sarah Brand than Ian Brown, the worst live singer I've ever seen by some considerable distance.

(because graceful self-delusion, if that's what it is, will forever trump graceless misplaced arrogance)

people are taking this seriously huh

she could also work on her enunciation ... I didn't really understand what she was saying half the time ... maybe it's just me being old

sarahell, Monday, 26 July 2021 16:40 (two years ago) link

no that was my first reaction even before the pitch. I'm like "is this mumblecountry"?

making splashes at Dan Flashes (Neanderthal), Monday, 26 July 2021 16:52 (two years ago) link

Yeah, I couldn't make any of it out before I read the lyrics.

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Monday, 26 July 2021 16:53 (two years ago) link

you actually read the lyrics?!

I've clearly been thinking too much about it. Reading the lyrics was basic level.

Feels like a lot of people itt investing way too much thought into this terrible song and terrible singer. Y'all really want a new Farrah Abraham that badly, huh?

I will give her this much: as awful as the song + singer are, the cumulative 45 seconds or so that I've heard of this (once for myself, once for my gf who probably noped out quicker than I did) have lodged themselves very firmly in my head.

"Fantasy" is good!

Red Dress with an actual singer is a good song

Loathed the Farrah Abraham, but I wouldn’t mind a new Laurel Halo - the unadorned pitchiness of Quarantine was a thing of great beauty.

mike t-diva, Monday, 26 July 2021 17:44 (two years ago) link

Gordon Haskell was kinda pitchy on this one, to the surprise of no one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNhfdZe5njk

tl;dr

I like the ii to II modulation in the chorus, that's what sticks in my head.

StanM, Wednesday, 28 July 2021 12:16 (two years ago) link

Lyrics on this are also really, impressively bad. I vote calculated effort to go viral. And good on her.

The only thing about this that even hints at calculation is that I'd think an Oxford grad student would generally have a better notion of how words go together.

Hmm, we'll never know.

I can't imagine another board with people trying to do the required mental gymnastics to turn the latter into the former though. Sometimes bad is just bad.
