I don’t really like his music at all…

xheugy eddy (D-40), Friday, 23 July 2021 17:03 (two years ago) link

it is a step down from "montero" yeah. ironically that one had a lower memeable lyric quotient but was probably better for it. he should save the screengrababble memey stuff for the videos honestly

i think i misheard "i ain't lost since i began" as "i ain't lost since i been gay" which is too bad as the latter would be better

jack harlow is not a selling point

one month passes...

And now

creating this album has been therapy for me. i’ve learned to let go of trying to control people’s perception of who i am, what i can do, and where i will be. i’ve realized the only opinion of me that really matters is my own.

no idea if this'll actually be a good record or not, but he's done a good job in building up hype for the album. it's nice to have an event album come out that actually feels exciting

just now catching up on this guy, this thread, and "Old Town Road." seems pretty awesome all around. my one contribution is that "Panini" to me seems to have a LOT more to do with "Your Smiling Face" by James Taylor than "In Bloom." which is cool imo.

I still think most of his music is hot garbage but I also want him to be wildly successful

the correct opinion

J0rdan S., Friday, 27 August 2021 00:25 (two years ago) link

Basically artists like him need to exist and excel and I’m happy to see it happening for him. (And people I know love him and this makes them happy too. So it’s cool. Also the “Olde Town Road” video was aces in a camp surrealist way I appreciated.)

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 27 August 2021 00:40 (two years ago) link

yeah he is an excellent popstar except for the music, if he was famous when I was 15 years old he would probably have been a massive icon for me

haven't listened yet (will do so after work) but uh it's got a 90 on metacritic so far??? only 7 reviews in but still

video brought back sad memories :( but it's nice that he is putting this stuff front and center, being super casual about it and actually being seen as rly cool for it

dyl, Saturday, 18 September 2021 01:01 (two years ago) link

ok on first impression this album's a lot darker than his meme-filled antics would suggest. it's also quite good

josh az (2011nostalgia), Saturday, 18 September 2021 04:01 (two years ago) link

are ppl itt still lukewarm on ‘montero’ (the song)? i had a similar initial reaction but it’s really grown on me to the point it’s now prob one of my fav singles of the year. ‘that’s what i want’ otoh way more immediate. feels like it’ll be a big hit. love the chorus

flopson, Saturday, 18 September 2021 19:34 (two years ago) link

I vastly preferred, the first thing he's done that registered as music first.

This has a few slinky jams. I'm glad M@ura's review pointed out the abundant use of guitars.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 18:40 (two years ago) link

it's ok. i think he's getting better as a singer maybe. i'm still not sure if it's refreshing or disappointing that he's like an above-average karoake singer.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 18:43 (two years ago) link

That's what I concluded too.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 18:47 (two years ago) link

I have more of an issue with the slow buildup of the backing band than I do with his performance; it's not like he's this amazing vocal or even idiosyncratic talent you want to hear isolated, let the band support him plz

talkin' about his flat tire (DJP), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 19:24 (two years ago) link

lol that was supposed to read "amazing or even idiosyncratic vocal talent", I would like to help fund an edit button

talkin' about his flat tire (DJP), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 19:25 (two years ago) link

really lackluster jolene there. i suppose i should try the new album.

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 23 September 2021 20:23 (two years ago) link

No one should be allowed to cover "Jolene" anymore. It's reached the status of "Hallelujah" or "Heroes" - it's completely wrung out.

sure the pop industry has always been about incremental reiterations of past successes but the absolute rut we are stuck in right now is so sad to see. dua fucking lipa the queen of barely passable 6/10 'bops' that all reheat whatever the least-boring aspect of her last hit was is considered an exciting top-tier artist, the biggest hits of the past several years all make an effort to remind listeners of the exact same #1 hit from the 80s and those that don't do so either are built around some corny classic hits safelist sample or interpolate aspects of multiple past hits so the sort of person who likes looking for taylor swift 'easter eggs' can feel clever (speaking of that artist, no wonder her current imperial phase is bolstered in large part by rerecordings of her old albums)

i hate this timeline, i'm embarrassed for these artists and i am not mad when they fall flat on their faces commercially as they seem to do about 50% of the time bc no one in this industry has any clue anymore

Enjoyed Chris Molanphy's "Old Town Road" book--very good on how Billboard's Top 100 works (and how it's evolved over the years), if that interests you.

clemenza, Saturday, 13 January 2024 20:19 (three months ago) link

dyl, I don’t know which country you live in, but my take on big hits on the UK pop chart over the last couple of years is the exact opposite - ten years ago, I’d have been broadly making your criticisms, but it feels like something has shifted over here, such that pop feels a lot more diverse and creative and surprising. I’m more excited about the UK pop chart now than at any time since 2010.
