Yeah having read more about it, while I liked the idea of "Naps," if this is truly something locals all know and identify with the city it totally works for me

the name is fine. spiders would've been cooler. i do like the blocky font, especially for cleveland - reminiscent of the previous font but just different enough

The new name is ok - I do prefer the old school names tho (Blues, Spiders etc).

i know the context behind it but guardians just sounds so generic

One of my favorite team in sports are called the Raptors so really my bar is pretty low.
I just don’t like the ‘Cleveland’ font, looks like ‘Cleueland’. The rest I think it’s dope.

the context is cool but the name itself is arena football-level militaristic garbage
also the font sucks. if they were really tying into the statues they’d have done something different than using warmed-over chief wahoo lettering

I don’t hear militaristic overtones with the word ‘Guardian’ but maybe it’s an americanism I’m missing.

were the new york guardians also named after traffic monuments?

combined with the team colors I think it's meant as a reference to the Red Guards

I vaguely remembered today that the start of Major League is a scene setting montage of Cleveland landmarks. I wondered if these Guardian statues were in that sequence. It turns out that the very first shot of the film is a pan down one of the statues.

rangers in eight games since the all-star break:
0-8
.160/.227/.244 with 13 runs in 260 PA (this OPS is 40 points lower than any single hitter with a minimum of 200 PA)
9.00 ERA, 61 runs allowed (60 earned), .304/.357/.596 against in 60 IP/277 PA (this OPS against is higher than all but eight single hitters with 200+ PA)

After failing to score in the 2nd inning of today’s game against the Astros, the Rangers have gone 97 innings without leading their opponent. They have just surpassed the 1977 Atlanta Braves who went 96 innings without a lead.

Are the Dodgers that embarrassed that they might lose the division for the first time in nearly a decade? They've only been 20 games over .500 since 2013.

holy shit, nick madrigal for a year and 2 months of craig kimbrel
― ✖, Friday, 30 July 2021 19:10 (two years ago) link
very consistent pattern this deadline of teams willing to give up touted prospects w/ many years of control for less than a few seasons of a high level player in order to try and win it this year. maybe a one year blip or perhaps a shifting in valuation a bit of what a push for a title is worth vs the allure of prospects w/ only a handful or so of teams really even trying to go for it
jesus luzardo for starling martejosiah gray & kiebert ruiz for scherzer/turnernick madrigal for craig kimbrelaustin martin & simeon woods richardson for jose berrios spencer howard for kyle gibson/ian kennedy
pretty much all current or ex top 100 prospects & a few of them much higher than that

Goddamn Ricketts family. I expected two of the big three (Rizzo, Bryant and Baez) to be traded, but I never thought they'd blow all three. If I had any confidence that these cheapskates would be opening their wallets for free agents I'd feel a little better... but this fucking sucks.
While I'm glad I never subscribed to their bullshit Marquee platform, I kinda wish I did only to cancel it now.

RIP Chicago Cubes. it was a fun dynasty
― frogbs, Friday, 30 July 2021 20:27 (two years ago) link
seems better to get something for the dudes now and then possibly re-sign them. i'll miss baez the most, he was my favorite. but also maybe this is the push i need to stop paying attention to the cubs and being mixed up with the ricketts.
also the white sox are looking pretty good so who cares
― na (NA), Friday, 30 July 2021 20:32 (two years ago) link
yeah the sox look great. annoying to see Baez go for a currently injured prospect to go.
i just have such little faith in the Ricketts opening the wallets for them again later. maybe i'll be pleasantly surprised. just harder to watch through the eyes of my 9 year-old, who literally cried when he heard the Rizzo news.
― a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 30 July 2021 20:40 (two years ago) link
awe, that sucks for kids. when i first heard it was Bart i was thinking Zaidi lost it and made no sense. of course the Giants were not giving up Bart for a rental.
― Bee OK, Friday, 30 July 2021 20:43 (two years ago) link
baez is a super-fun player but he also has a career 102 wRC+ and .303 OBP. a *lot* of his value depends on his defense. i'd be leery of signing him long-term.
it made sense for the cubs to trade those guys today; the real capitulation was when they dumped darvish.
i wonder if impending labor strife had any impact on all this? probably not much, because i don't think anyone knows what's going to happen
