Ah yes

Eric Clapton said he would cancel any shows if the venue requires attendees prove they are vaccinated against Covid-19. https://t.co/ByUi9lLG2V

Clapton reminds me of Denis Leary's Elvis joke. Had Clapton died at 27 in 1972 (and he nearly did thanks to his heroin addiction), it would've been seen as an awful human tragedy that left behind an impeccable body of work. There's no romanticizing those 49 extra years, that's for sure.

Oh I didn't realize all his shows were free

There is something especially galling about how poorly these people try to use the language of laws & rights. A society where everyone thinks they're a lawyer is a weird hell

That post feels especially harsh given how much Eddie Van Halen openly discussed Clapton as being a huge inspiration to him (as a guitar player, pre-'70s bland-out). I guess Van Halen's kind words did nothing to soften him up and Clapton was a shit to him.

there was a documentary about Clapton on BBC4 last week, he did not come across at all well of course, funniest bit was him describing how his parents made him get a haircut when he was a teenager and after that he was unable to trust anyone ever again, think this sums him up pretty well

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 22 July 2021 08:34 (two years ago) link

I saw a documentary on Cream recently and there was a bit where Clapton described almost passing out when, for pretty much the first time in his career, he got a bad review. The main thing I got from it though was that, in a band with Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce was considered the problem.

Unless it’s more than just that one tweet, I’m not yet fully convinced. There’s a more charitable way to read that, i think. It’s awkwardly worded, but it sounds like she is arguing for a way to convince more hesitant people… maybe? But part of that more charitable reading is me really, really not wanting her to come out as anti vax.

If there was a liability factor with the vaccine companies maybe more people would get vaccinated .

Johnson & Johnson just reached a settlement in the opioid lawsuits, and they manufacture the single dose vaccine - within that context, her tweet doesn't necessarily mean she's arguing that vaccinations are medically dubious, but she should clarify that a bit more.

birdistheword, Friday, 23 July 2021 16:26 (two years ago) link

I don't get the analogy - if someone believes the covid vaccine is being pushed/over-prescribed and resulting in 100,000s of deaths (like opioids), then they're a hardcore antivaxxer who will never be convinced.

I don't think there's any sense or reason behind her tweet, it's not even worth wrestling with.

Max Ice (morrisp), Friday, 23 July 2021 16:37 (two years ago) link

I'm more offended that she left a space before the full stop.

I didn't mean she believed the two were analogous in that way. If someone was angry/bitter that J&J got off lightly for the opioid crisis, that could color their view about anything they're involved with. But you're right that it's not worth wrestling with, I just thought it was a reasonable interpretation rather than jumping to the worst conclusion and potentially overreacting.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Friday, 23 July 2021 19:34 (two years ago) link

Fuck Clapton, but iirc he himself *did* get vaccinated and apparently had a particularly bad experience:

“I took the first jab of AZ and straight away had severe reactions which lasted ten days. I recovered eventually and was told it would be twelve weeks before the second one…,” Clapton wrote.

“About six weeks later I was offered and took the second AZ shot, but with a little more knowledge of the dangers. Needless to say the reactions were disastrous, my hands and feet were either frozen, numb or burning, and pretty much useless for two weeks, I feared I would never play again, (I suffer with peripheral neuropathy and should never have gone near the needle.)

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 July 2021 20:09 (two years ago) link

Should never have gone near the needle indeed

a cad, a bounder, a rotter, a really bad sort (Matt #2), Friday, 23 July 2021 20:22 (two years ago) link

I didn't doubt the negative reaction. A lot's already been reported on his physical health issues on recent years and how they've made it difficult for him to play. Before he announced his "last" tour (which, surprise, wasn't his last), he said he feared he'd never be able to play again due to those issues. It's just incredibly douchy and shitty when he uses that as a rationale to trash vaccines AND everything known about the pandemic altogether.
