you folks over there know it was 47°c in the rainforest of portland oregon less than a month ago right

basking in the heat and mildly amused by the locals' despair.

tbf it goes from 20 degrees to 30 degrees overnight and lasts for 5 days. Try getting used to that each year.

I mean, this is a pretty good forecast for us during late July.

pplains, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 14:22 (two years ago) link

the thing is, when I lived in the South (GA), the *indoor* summer temperature was around 18, which makes a pretty huge difference

The UK doesn’t feel much less humid than Arkansas in practice. Real lung weather sometimes, especially at night.

Don't know what you're all talking about, it's 14 degrees in Shetland right now.

Going by extended experiences in Montreal and Bucharest, the current UK heat wave (in Oxford, at least) is lightweight-tier in terms of how it *feels*. Imo it's just nice out.

But, to reiterate, in terms of what it means for the planet, it's a total disaster.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 14:59 (two years ago) link

But things feel different depending on the standard climate one is used to! I do chuckle when I see Phoenicians in 50F/10C bundled up like arctic explorers, but I don't doubt that they truly do feel cold. Because they've just been thru 6 months of over 100F/40C.

13°C not exactly too effing hot but you shouldn't be able to go for a 1am dog walk in the park wearing a t-shirt in late december in the north of England. It just isn't right. There is a breeze but it's warm wind.

Actually considering the last few years this is late for our first 90 degree day in DC. I’m sure historically this is still very early.

C'mon. Bring that shit. Do it. Hurt me. Do it. Do it. Do it.

Don't know why it says "Humid" up there when the humidity is only 46%. Hygrometer must be on the fritz.

I have been living on sandwiches and salads for two weeks because the thought of hot food is so deeply unpleasant right now.

xp good lord

a friend of mine is a runner; his rule of thumb is that if air temp + dew point is over 150, it's basically unsafe to run. i've never experienced a 176

mookieproof, Thursday, 7 July 2022 22:15 (one year ago) link

We're having to get our house reroofed (only 13 years after the last time but that's another story) and our roofer said his working day is 5:30 a.m. to about noon.

WmC, Thursday, 7 July 2022 22:23 (one year ago) link

In AZ they do a lot of roofing at night! Construction in general, from what I’ve heard.

Knock on wood, but it has been a relatively cool summer here in Philly, not as many 92+ days. Still looking forward to our trip to Maine in a few weeks tho.

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Friday, 8 July 2022 12:06 (one year ago) link

Yeah long term forecast is that DC will have a “normal” or slightly below normal summer, but that’s still higher than past historical standards. We just won’t be in there “Top 10 hottest summers” like we have been stuck on every year for a decade.

Antifa Sandwich Artist (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 8 July 2022 17:32 (one year ago) link

Our neighbors are an empty lot to the east, an insurance office to the north, a school building empty in the summer to the west and an empty house to the south. I should let our roofer know he's welcome to set up lights and work at night if he wants.

WmC, Friday, 8 July 2022 17:40 (one year ago) link

Long way off but if this even comes close, eek.

What a run. I know it's probably feeding the Express bollocks that releases by tweeting this anyway but I feel like its something to highlight anyway as 44C on a model run is exceptionally mad twice in a row! Slim chance but scope for extreme heat nxt wk at least. pic.twitter.com/1i0jGpNEGn

Interesting that London was hotter today than Miami or Miami Beach have ever been in recorded history.

Meanwhile NYC is poised to get 7 straight days of 90+ F (32.2 C) starting Tuesday.

Because of the heat (and rising electricity costs) I've fired up my old Mac Mini - a 2012 model, but I've installed Big Sur on it with this tool:
https://github.com/barrykn/big-sur-micropatcher

One thing I can recommend is a utility called smcFanControl:
https://github.com/hholtmann/smcFanControl

Macs typically don't run the fun until they get really hot, but I'm not comfortably with a tiny block of aluminium running at 70c. smfFanControl lets you manually set the minimum fan speed.

Antifa Sandwich Artist (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 18 July 2022 20:47 (one year ago) link

Yes, but with a specific reference to how hot it was in 1976.

xp Texas, so there's air conditioning everywhere (until the power grid fails!) but we still get several dozen to 100+ deaths every summer because landlords are monsters/air conditioning is too expensive to replace/our social safety net is an early death.

we're around 105 for a while, low humidity though. slc utah. monsoon moisture has been blessing us sporadically over the past two weeks. we're right at the northern tip of its reach so it isn't much. even though the colorado plateau has had a few better than average monsoon years, the colorado river system is basically collapsing from drought.
