Counting 11 (and more beyond what is shown, I'm sure) sales of the limited (to 333) "art" edition of Grouper's Grid Of Points all from the same p0pm4rk3t seller at the price point of the normal edition, therefore all sold using the the incorrect entry, and not a single complaint in the comments! Actually surprised. How many of those recipients even realized? That mega/warehouse seller so notorious for selling with the incorrect entry. Buyer beware.

after buying second hand records & cds online for literal decades, it occurred to me upon the arrival of my last discogs order just how good things have gotten when the seller included an extra blank jewel case on the off chance that the proper one might have gotten damaged in transit.

beats 20 years ago when i was trying to understand why ebay's customer service desk was contacting me about a complaint for a neutral feedback i left on a record that was advertised as "VG" but was unplayable because of how damaged it was.

things repeat forever and there never is a remedy (Austin), Wednesday, 4 August 2021 19:37 (two years ago) link

The bizarre thing about ebay's condition grades for CDs is the almost total emphasis on the jewel case rather than the media. Discogs is the other way round on the basis that they are interchangeable. Which obviously makes more sense, although not all jewel cases are created equal, the quality of plastic has got progressively worse since they were introduced.

no way would I pay that much but if it was half that....lets just say I'd be tempted

My sales have went through the floor, one £3 CD sold in three weeks. Might be a summer lull or COVID worries but suspect the culprit is the new VAT rules to EU which have fucked things up.

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 18:49 (two years ago) link

frogbs - I missed that sale and it looks like it's over, how much were they asking for it?

FWIW, my UK to EU sales have collapsed since the VAT change.

frogbs - I missed that sale and it looks like it's over, how much were they asking for it?

iirc it was like $295 or something.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 11 August 2021 22:10 (two years ago) link

yeah it was over $200 I think

kind of a funny story about that album, it's infamous for appearing on all those "worst album covers of all time" lists but it's not really clear how it got on there in the first place. I don't know how many copies are out there...it's got to be around 500. the music isn't exactly bad, but it was kind of cool when nobody actually knew what it sounded like...

two weeks pass...

so here's a first for me: ordered a mint sealed 70s record. record arrives and i unseal it, and record literally looks like its been dragged behind a truck, almost unplayable. i messaged the seller about it and hes just like "i said it was sealed, and it was sealed, i cant vouch for what was inside the shrink". which is obviously true, and he looks like a high volume seller so i doubt that he has the time or inclination to be pulling a rinkydink shrinkwrap scam like this himself. caveat emptor i guess but am i wrong to expect anything from the seller? maybe im a pushover but i feel like if i was in their shoes i would at least offer like a token refund, 15% or something. frustrating.

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Monday, 30 August 2021 12:47 (two years ago) link

IMO if it was graded Mint then you can reasonably expect a "perfect" record whether the seller wishes to take the chance on that or not. Caveat Vendor IMO.

*Venditor ;-)

Noel Emits, Monday, 30 August 2021 13:16 (two years ago) link

If I were the seller, I'd absolutely offer a refund that takes account of the actual unsealed grading (and by the same token, I'd also expect the buyer to be understanding and reasonable, and not to leave bad feedback). I'd almost certainly be offering a lot more than a 15% refund, as well.

mike t-diva, Monday, 30 August 2021 13:21 (two years ago) link

if he sold it sealed then the assumption is that it is mint / unplayed inside, he might have not known this, but it's still his responsibility

fc_TEFH28mo (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 30 August 2021 13:23 (two years ago) link

Awful - yeah, there were some stores even that would re-shrink used albums in the 70s. The first clue I got was when I was about to list an album as Mint/VG+ when I noticed the cutout didn’t go through the shrink - that is, the album had at some point been cutout, opened, & re-sealed. When I opened it, the record was VG at best & it went in the bargain bin instead of Discogs.

I got another batch of records where the record store had put stickers on the jackets “this album has been tested & plays perfectly” and some of them had shrink over top of the stickers.

As a seller I offer to open & inspect sealed records as an option, but no buyer has ever asked me to do so.

I dunno what I’d do if I was on the other side of your sitch; probably refund the price difference between the M and the actual grade.

"The Pus/Worm" by The Smiths (hardcore dilettante), Monday, 30 August 2021 13:24 (two years ago) link

yeah its a tough spot for the seller to be in. not gonna leave bad feedback bc its such a strange rare situation, but just annoying.

my first tipoff that something was weird was that the record had a huge sticker on the front of the shrink that says "FACTORY SEALED!" which, uhh, i'm pretty sure they dont put on at the factory, lol

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Monday, 30 August 2021 13:32 (two years ago) link

When you see that on a beer bottle, that’s when you wanna start worrying.

FWIW, one of the deejays in Chicago (I can't remember who) once recalled on-air when she worked at a record store, there was some douchebag who would come in every month to buy a stack of records AND a pack of cassettes. He would then come back a few days later and return all of his opened records (but not the cassettes). Before my time, but I was stunned that was even doable when it was obvious what the customer was doing - I guess that probably led to a lot of "re-seals."

birdistheword, Monday, 30 August 2021 14:34 (two years ago) link

Maybe you're trying to be fair to the seller or just don't want the hassle but don't rule out returning it for a full refund. If you used PayPal you'll have strong protections and they can reimburse return postage.

Noel Emits, Monday, 30 August 2021 14:41 (two years ago) link

dealers can usually tell when the seal is real. those 70s pressings have those little breather holes.

Thus Sang Freud, Monday, 30 August 2021 16:30 (two years ago) link

Before my time, but I was stunned that was even doable

People routinely bought books, read them, and returned them when I worked at a bookstore. Didn't even lie about it, because management didn't care. Unsold books got pulped so it didn't even really matter that much other than being a hassle for the cashier processing a return (and fucking over the author of course). Graphic novels were a popular item for this, like manga that costs $9 but you can read in about two hours.

four weeks pass...

They're raising USPS prices for the holiday season again (between Oct. 3 and Dec. 26, 2021) - doesn't effect media mail but heavier and faster services will be a little more costly. I guess this is going to be an annual thing now?

I would say 98% of my orders are paid within seconds. With the ones that aren’t paid instantly, up to this point I’ve generally sent a friendly reminder the next day like “Thanks for your order; I can send it out upon receipt of payment, cheers” type of thing, but at this point I’m inclined to not do anything at all until receipt of payment (including even locating the fucking thing in the stacks) and just let non-payers time out & get the auto-feedback. What’s everyone else doing in this regard?

"The Pus/Worm" by The Smiths (hardcore dilettante), Wednesday, 29 September 2021 18:50 (two years ago) link

i myself have been a non-payer through just being a total space cadet but tbf discogs' UX is TERRIBLE in that there is a big honking "pay now" button that does not actually pay now, it sends a message to the seller and caculates the shipping and then presents you with an extra step to pay (iirc back in the old days you even needed to wait for the seller to respond with the shipping charges, further breaking down the system) and it's definitely happened that i've switched tabs in that little interstice, forgotten about it and then had sellers gently prodding me and then i get all flustered when i remember that i was buying a £35 grant green album at 2 in the morning

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 19:25 (two years ago) link

i just let it sit, it drops out of the cart in a week or two, right?

brimstead, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 19:44 (two years ago) link

i don't know, i always end up paying for it. i DID want it. sometimes the seller is kind of pissed, i feel bad.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 19:46 (two years ago) link

My payment threshold is 14 days, so I usually send polite reminders after 5 days and 10 days. Discogs emails its own reminder after 13 days, I think. The 5 day reminder frequently elicits a response.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 21:50 (two years ago) link

I paid instantly till recently when purchased and paid for items were in stock and the refund I got back with exchange rate fuckery I ended up with less in my PayPal than I had before. I think it's fair for buyers to wait for confirmation that items are in stock.

*weren't in stock

micarl, Wednesday, 29 September 2021 22:36 (two years ago) link

wtf who takes 5 days to pay after checkout

I submit the problem here is the app, desktop browser wirks great for orders

https://i.ibb.co/j5v3xMr/refund.jpg

Here's how I got stung. PayPal account before purchase was 11.13EUR (+CC Payment) and after the my refund I was left with just 3.14EUR on my PayPal because the guy didn't have something in stock so I asked to cancel the order.

I still haven't left the seller feedback but it really annoyed me.

I think it's fair if someone hasn't paid to just confirm you have the stock and that you will send it as soon as payment is received.

How did you lose money when you got a full refund?

Sassy Boutonnière (ledriver), Thursday, 30 September 2021 17:56 (two years ago) link

My PayPal account went from 11.13 Eu before sending that (as well as a CC payment that was refunded in full) to 3.14 Eu after the refund. My guess is the Euro vs the NZD strengthened in between me paying him and him giving me the refund. 7.99 EU is unaccounted for?

micarl, Thursday, 30 September 2021 18:52 (two years ago) link

Did he give a full refund or partial refund? Find it difficult to believe that changes in exchange rate over a week or two would eat up 3/4 of the refund.

Dan Worsley, Thursday, 30 September 2021 18:58 (two years ago) link

Ah, misunderstood your post. I thought the item cost 11.13, I guess that exchange rate around have made a difference given it was 130 Euro.

Dan Worsley, Thursday, 30 September 2021 19:01 (two years ago) link

There's an image a few posts earlier that shows the details of the two transactions and the balance of my PayPal before and after.

micarl, Thursday, 30 September 2021 19:02 (two years ago) link

It's only the difference between 11.13€ and 3.14€ but I think that's still far more than you'd expect for the exchange rate difference over four days. It doesn't look like a prtial refund - it's showing the same figures as for the original payment.

only built 4 lynx africa (Noel Emits), Thursday, 30 September 2021 19:05 (two years ago) link

I don't really understand why it would affect your paypal balance if it went to the credit card but maybe that's how the do it.

only built 4 lynx africa (Noel Emits), Thursday, 30 September 2021 19:07 (two years ago) link

what happened to me was super weird, dude prob never sent the tape, I told him I'd have to take it to PayPal after a while, he said OK, I got a refund, then an email from PayPal saying "your refund has been delayed", then it was canceled, this then happened like 4 times and the last time he sent the "payment" PayPal closed the case and I couldn't seem to reopen it no matter where I navigated to.

sleeve, Thursday, 30 September 2021 19:13 (two years ago) link

then, of course, that last one was canceled as well

sleeve, Thursday, 30 September 2021 19:13 (two years ago) link

I don't really understand why it would affect your paypal balance if it went to the credit card but maybe that's how the do it.

I use the PayPal credit I have from selling records to buy more but this purchase I only had 11.13 EU as a balance so the rest of the payment was deducted from my credit card. I would expect to get the same amount back but I didn't even though the refund was the full amount. The only thing I can think of is the exchange rate changing so the credit was full for my credit card but only partial of my PayPal balance. It's weird to me too.

micarl, Thursday, 30 September 2021 20:53 (two years ago) link

OK, yeah I think that could make sense. It's maybe worth knowing as well that if a refund is issued within 24 hours Paypal uses the same exchange rate as the original payment.

only built 4 lynx africa (Noel Emits), Thursday, 30 September 2021 21:04 (two years ago) link

Right. Too bad this guy took 4 days after receiving payment to work out he didn't have it.

micarl, Thursday, 30 September 2021 21:16 (two years ago) link

To be honest, that's happened with me occasionally. An item I thought I had, turned out to have been sold a long time back. I have processed full refunds in those cases, and everyone's been fine. Apart from one who went on ridiculous and wanted to sue for compensation for the disappointment, but I never heard a peep after day two so hey.
