I really, really hate that usage of "myself"

by about the fourth time he used it I was like physically cringing. not the sort of writing that backs up his claim to competence tbh

k3vin k., Friday, 9 July 2021 01:19 (two years ago) link

two weeks pass...

it's officially back but i can't read anything on the site bc it's butt-ugly and i don't usually even kvetch about (re)designs like everyone else online bc who cares usually but this time wow it's butt-ugly

bon ivermectin (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 18:00 (two years ago) link

holy shit that's bad

wow they must've hired the guy who did the outline

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 18:43 (two years ago) link

Outline was not this bad to look at

bon ivermectin (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 18:51 (two years ago) link

lol fair, this is much harder to digest with the eyes

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 18:52 (two years ago) link

but it could well be the same person as it's the same parents company?

it does look bad.

Some of the typefaces remind me of the New Republic's recent redesign, and may be reflective of a trend away from the clean sans-serifs of the 2010s, but the overall look is more aggressive.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 July 2021 18:58 (two years ago) link

jesus, this is impossible on the eyes

Yours in Sorrow, A Schoolboy: (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 19:02 (two years ago) link

It really is the worst looking website I've seen in quite a while.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 19:14 (two years ago) link

Getting Time Cube vibes from this.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 28 July 2021 19:26 (two years ago) link

i like it. it looks like hipster runoff -- a riot of fonts and sizes, really an anti-aesthetic

treeship., Wednesday, 28 July 2021 19:28 (two years ago) link

When was Gawker bought out by Dr. Bronner's tech-savvy nephew

Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 19:30 (two years ago) link

Nu-Gawker = the new Sarah Brand. 'No no no, you don't get it, this is a conscious aesthetic choice by someone who totally knows what they're doing.'

Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 19:36 (two years ago) link

treeship gets it

k3vin k., Wednesday, 28 July 2021 20:28 (two years ago) link

Genius.

…not to be that guy, did you relaunch with no black people on the editorial team? https://t.co/Jg2mV5pM61

Deleted this tweet because I was wrong apparently—lesson learned, don’t judge ppl by their Twitter photos, my apologies to new @Gawker pic.twitter.com/kXuQIKlU1x

my kingdom for a readable website with good writing on it that isn't some fucking thing

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 21:02 (two years ago) link

it looks fine?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 21:12 (two years ago) link

there are enough boring ass minimal websites. this is neat

micah, Wednesday, 28 July 2021 21:24 (two years ago) link

The design is fine, could be a lot worse. Scrolling down and seeing the first three (non self-congratulatory) stories being a creepy pap shot, Bieber's relationship status and Chrissy Tiegen's real estate deals proves that this is going to be a thing that is very much not for me. But, hey, I'm sure the need for clicks is real.

Not that the gossip rag stuff is new at all, but it seemed a little less prominent before? Or maybe I'm just misremembering.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 21:35 (two years ago) link

it is ugly as hell and there was nothing i wanted to click on, but i did not get a pop-up asking me to subscribe to a newsletter, so that's a W

The color fonts are a no from me, dawg

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 22:40 (two years ago) link

It’s the kind of thing that would look better in a 1990s issue of SPY than as part of gossip website design

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 28 July 2021 22:41 (two years ago) link

In any event it’s hard to gin up the interest to read my-Gawker

(Though I trust that frequenters of this thread will cry out if it’s worthwhile)

I kind of like the trashy mismatched design on desktop. Shame the headline writers are bad

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 29 July 2021 12:35 (two years ago) link

very "alternative student newspaper, can you believe the university gave us a budget for this" vibes so far

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 29 July 2021 12:36 (two years ago) link

Lol

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 29 July 2021 14:54 (two years ago) link

Got some serious Clickhole vibes from that nu site.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 29 July 2021 15:03 (two years ago) link

semi related there's a pretty good interview with drew and AJ on the defector pod

Looks better on mobile than desktop (though still with the underboob header), the really celeb gossipy part (Divorce Watch) feels out of place today with every celebrity's omnipresent social media presence delivering gossip and drama to you.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 29 July 2021 22:02 (two years ago) link

the website i miss isn't gawker but the awl.

kelly conaboy is writing for this new gawker. she wrote a few really funny pieces for the awl so that makes me feel more positive toward this new gawker.

treeship., Friday, 30 July 2021 14:41 (two years ago) link

yeah the Awl was something special

bon ivermectin (Murgatroid), Friday, 30 July 2021 14:50 (two years ago) link

nu-gawker has the early 90s print magazine experimental design aesthetic imo

mh, Saturday, 31 July 2021 19:24 (two years ago) link

says something that there's really nothing to say about the content

"Looks better on mobile than desktop" this is widespread lately and I hate it. mobile first design but your shit still better look good on a goddamned normal screen

If they're not going to do a post on the crepey J** T****tino poem, what is even the purpose of this site

my Least Favorite Writer (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 9 August 2021 15:29 (two years ago) link

there probably is a post about it, you just can't find it because of the awful shit design
