"Oh Daddy" is the least interesting song on the album, but "Songbird" is so well sung and so poised that I can't toss it, especially when my experience hearing the live versions deepens the studio cut.

two weeks pass...

I'm surprised at how deceiving "Hold Me" is as an elevator tune. It's actually quite good.

Any other latter day FM tunes people recommend?

All of them?

At least all the singles from Mirage and Tango in the Night.

Wow this latest single from Lindsay Buckingham is GOOD.

Been in a dadrock funk lately, searching out 90s-style mellowism...

Also I am really liking Haim's cover of "Hold Me".

especially since they based their sound from 2013-2017 on "Seven Wonders."

As shared in the Obituary thread, seeing reports that Christine McView passed away. I'm skeptical of Twitter these days, but this was also posted on what purports to be her Instagram as well (though I'll not that neither are verified).

The posts are mirrored on both her's and the band's Facebook pages which are verified, so I believe it to be real.

Incredible, the true secret weapon of the band even during the Buckingham/Nicks industrial complex era. She wrote so many amazing songs on the five LP preceding their breakthrough on the 1975 self-titled, enough to make up a classic album of her own.

Such a unique bluesy voice <3 I need to get around to listening to the Chicken Shack records she’s on.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 30 November 2022 20:15 (one year ago) link

Sounds silly to call her underrated in some respects, but given how much attention's given to the others, she really is. After Green left and before Buckingham and Nicks joined, she was singing and composing by far their best material, and even when they blew up into superstars, I think she was neck-and-neck with Buckingham as the group's best songwriter. (I like Nicks, any group's lucky to have her aboard, but I think McVie and Buckingham were creating better material.)

Fuck no! My favorite member of FM.

God, this is affecting me in a way that Prince/Bowie/George Michael etc. didn't.

Something about the way her melodies worked with her voice always gets me. Laid back but huge.

Absolutely. This may sound a bit gooey, but the first time I heard "Say You Love Me" and "You Make Loving Fun" (would've been around high school) they seemed like the kind of thing you'd want to hear from your significant other.

You can make a great lost Christine McVie album from her best stuff outside of the Buckingham/Nicks years:

1. Spare Me a Little of Your Love
2. Remember Me
3. Dissatisfied
4. Did You Ever Love Me
5. The Way I Feel
6. Show Me a Smile
7. I'd Rather Go Blind (a cover recorded by her previous band, Chicken Shack)
8. Why
9. Heroes Are Hard to Find
10. Come a Little Bit Closer

birdistheword, Wednesday, 30 November 2022 21:12 (one year ago) link

(and yes Believe Me too!)

birdistheword, Wednesday, 30 November 2022 21:12 (one year ago) link

Show Me a Smile and Spare Me a Little of Your Love are so awesome. The former is a trial run for the latter, more pastoral and mysterious, Zeppelin could have killed this song on LZIII. The latter is bigger and more pop, pointing toward the future. My favorite is whichever I am listening to at the time.

The Bankruptcy of the Planet of the Apes (PBKR), Wednesday, 30 November 2022 21:37 (one year ago) link

I almost asked if this means Fleetwood Mac is functionally done, but then I caught myself and remembered that they already toured once without her. I guess a better question is whether this prompts Nicks to bury the hatchet with Buckingham, again, and continue riding the money train. You know, once more, for old times sake.

An early Cut Copy song supposedly sampled "Everywhere," but I thought this sneaky one from a few years back was as good a tribute a song could get without covering it:

I should add when Danny Kirwan passed away several years ago, "Spare Me a Little of Your Love" also came to mind. His guitar solo is BEAUTIFUL, and I think it shows more than anyone else, even John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, Kirwan would have flourished in the pop-era of Fleetwood Mac as much as the blues-rock era.

birdistheword, Wednesday, 30 November 2022 22:48 (one year ago) link

(obviously that wasn't going to happen since he didn't get along with the others and eventually had mental health issues, but had things been different...)

My favourite single Mac recording - the way she sings, and that heartbroken, beautiful final guitar solo, and the way it interacts with Christine's organ. Just the greatest.

The radio has been playing more Fleetwood Mac than usual today, even heard a couple of deep pre Buckingham/Nicks stuff. The saddest moment in the car came when they played You Make Loving fun, and the placeholder graphic they used was a portrait of the band from the Say You Will era, minus Christine. it was kind of eerie.
