thank you! really appreciate that! and some good news, i got my first big painting commission! 60x40", and i have photos of the room it's in. it's right by a giant window with lush vegetation, and the rug is incredible so the color palette is already set - bright and ready for blotchy color fields! i am nervous but also listening to ambient music, everything is ok.

yes he was. i have some funny stories about him (all good - he was an amazing person and the first close friend i had who read more than i did (by a lot))

thanks to silby and jaq and others, i was able to make more money than my living costs this month, and i just sent @nitaslovetrain (on instagram, also on venmo/cashapp - she rules) $1200 to cover ACs for 8 families in chicago. i'm trying to be ok with saying that out loud, because i want other people to see that and think about either donating themselves to something else, or adopting some sort of similar model for themselves. the model is that you just send any money you make beyond your living costs to other people. it's flexible - what are your living costs? even that in itself is hard to define. but whatever it is, just take that as your own starting point and change it.

or you could send a smaller portion of your excess wealth to other people. 50% 10% 5%. but maybe at least some %. this is my gimmick, because i think it's a good thing for people to do in general, and also because maybe it will convince some people to send me $ for my art more readily, because i will never, ever, be one of those gigantic rich assholes

thank you forks! it's still going, for better or worse! it's actually my second attempt at something, my first big commission (and largest i've made so far at 60x40"), and pretty much leeway to make anything i want but to keep the colors on the brighter side.

my first attempt at it is currently in the lower left. it was doing ok at first, but then accidentally made a river of blood and a very bad pickup truck. i decided to stretch another canvas at the same size and work up another potential option for the buyer. i still have a ways to go on all of them! *grimace*

oh, so I forgot to say! i have since gone back to the one on the left and transformed the pickup trucks into arcade machines (sort of) and added a mysterious glowing orb, and it's started to feel it can fit with the room it'll be in, after all!

jeez, i did some stuff last night, drunkenly, almost in a blacked out state. :-o

1) i got new health insurance ($30/month, compared to $270/month before)
2) i decided i would definitely make some sort of illustrated publication
3) i booked a return visit to the fucked up river i was just on, so that i can do research for I Heard It on the River

$30/month health insurance sounds like some sketchy stuff. Make sure it doesn't have some insane deductible.

it can't possibly be worse than my last insurance, which was blue shield blue cross. i attempted to meet my Primary Care Physician 3 different times, and failed every time because they were "nearby" in the neighborhood. some intern managed to refill my depression medication for me by cutting a deal with the PCP who was shopping somewhere, or something, and then they would only send the Rx to the pharmacy via Fax, which didn't work. so i had to drive across the city to the shitty alley doctor and transfer the Rx to my pharmacy by hand

if i would have had a job, i would have had to ask off work like 5 different times in order to get the Rx refilled. just bonkers

yes. i am very lucky in that my only current interaction with it is to beg for a refill for depression medication every 3 months. if i had to go for chronic treatment i think i would explode

i ran a very interesting instagram story "poll" last night (i'm at @zach_tbd there btw).

i asked people what kind of price range they would be most interested in, if they thinking about buy something of mine. instagram is kinda dumb so i could only have 4 options (and i had to pick a "correct" answer, lol), and there was no option to select multiple options or all of the above. but it came out like this:

7 - $10-$30 (zines, tapes, small prints, etc)
10 - $30-$100 (smaller works on paper; acrylic or watercolor)
9 - $100-$250 (smaller acrylic/oil works on canvas)
3 - $500+ (oil on larger canvases)

which was about what i was thinking it would be! personally, when i buy art, it's usually in that first or second category - rarely over $75. it's really useful to me to know the distribution, though, because i think i've been spending a bit too much time on large canvases, paintings that take me weeks and weeks and that i revise a million times. i'll still do those, but i need to pepper in more smaller, one-night paintings and drawings.

i am also going to start making prints, i think. not of paintings, though. i had a really good, long conversation with a friend of mine who adamantly against selling prints. i don't 100% agree with her, but i did come away thinking that while i would make prints of things that i make on my computer, or prints of sketches or drawings or whatever, i won't do prints of larger paintings, at least for now;

i rehabbed my very first attempt at oil painting, which was a painting of the shed outside the cabin i stayed at up in stoner ridge WI. the background was interesting, the trees, but the shed was awful. so it felt really good to turn it upside-down and just paint over the whole thing. i feel like i did right by the ethos of stoner ridge, and it only took me a few hours and is small so i'll be able to sell it for less than other things! #feelinggood
