Her first name is actually pronounced Ceeharley

I'm afraid Greentea Peng fits here for me. Undoubtedly I am missing out, but it sounds like a YouTube channel about health food shops or an artisan teabag brand.
― Piedie Gimbel, Friday, 2 July 2021 12:31 (two years ago) link
Greentea Peng is a funny one bc her name def fits the vibe

Fairly certain there's at least a few songs with a "Charli Ecks-See-Ecks" tag on them.Must’ve missed it! That’s obv my first guess, but it sounds like someone’s uncool dad guessing (wrong) how to pronounce an artist name.

rn I am listening to Freakadelic by Jooklo Stellar Tribe; I really love this record a lot but man if anything was worth mentioning in this thread...
― cwkiii, Friday, 2 July 2021 16:48 (two years ago) link
I did pointedly ignore the Jooklo groups for several years before stumbling across a description of this record that finally made me curious enough to check them out, so it is actually on topic haha

― kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 15:56 (two years ago) link
Wheatus's debut album was weird, they were obsessed with the iROC, which they mentioned in "Teenage Dirtbag", but are also pictured in one in the liner notes.
and i know this cos one of my best friends bought the album and i have clowned him ever since
― not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 16:18 (two years ago) link
The band derives its name from the nickname "wedus" given to the Brown brothers by their father when they were children
OK but what the fuck is wedus.
― Alba, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 16:46 (two years ago) link
Another song from the album, "Punk Ass Bitch", was bought by the creators of Jackie Chan Adventures and reworked as "Chan's the Man", the end credits theme for the program's first season.

new one: The Goon Sax
― r u rolling pop 2021 (morrisp), Friday, 9 July 2021 14:48 (two years ago) link
Dry Cleaning is a chore not a band name.
― AJD, Friday, 9 July 2021 15:56 (two years ago) link
Goon Sax is apparently slang for teenagers taking the silver bag out of box wine so they can walk around and drink out of their jackets, which you gotta respect that
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 9 July 2021 15:58 (two years ago) link
Well, I think the slang is goon sack, so turning it into a sax pun is what you’ve got to respect or not
― Alba, Friday, 9 July 2021 16:03 (two years ago) link
It’s in the proud tradition of sax on the beach imo
― Alba, Friday, 9 July 2021 16:04 (two years ago) link
haha yeah i like it
also i think it just looks more appealing visually written out "goon sax" vs "goon sacks"
I was just happy to learn about goon sacks, wish i would have thought of that when i was a kid

To those unfamiliar with Manchester and Glasgow but on top of swinging London mythology, it’s a bit like naming your band Carnaby Street.
― Alba, Friday, 9 July 2021 16:22 (two years ago) link
Before Alba's clarification, this post had me assuming this was called "goon sax" because drinking from the silver bag looked like playing the sax.
― Vaguely Threatening CAPTCHAs, Friday, 9 July 2021 18:15 (two years ago) link
xps isn't it (also) a play on Gunne Sax?

Oh wow, this is some multi-layered genius
― Alba, Friday, 9 July 2021 19:28 (two years ago) link
There have been a lot of other bands over the last several years with similarly prosaic names, that by all rights I should avoid out of principle, expect that I kinda like them all: Real Estate, Tennis, Hockey, etc.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci suits their music; or at least their earlier work up to Gorky 5

To complete the 'puppy' triumvirate (after Skinny and Snarky), Bubble Puppy always sounded like a band I didn't want to hear.

― beard papa, Friday, 16 July 2021 20:24 (two years ago) link
I've written off bands whose titles come from cool and completely non-obscure choices: The Grifters and Twin Peaks are two that come to mind.
― ... (Eazy), Friday, 16 July 2021 20:26 (two years ago) link
*whose names
We Were Promised Jetpacks is a great name I think. And they're a nice wee band.
― Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 16 July 2021 20:27 (two years ago) link
In defense of the Grifters, I don't think the Jim Thompson novel was "completely non-obscure" when they chose their name (tho I also don't generally favor band names that are just the name of something else "cool").
― aging goth couple™ (morrisp), Friday, 16 July 2021 21:11 (two years ago) link
It's interesting that the Scorsese adaption of that novel came out soon afterward; I guess something was in the air.

None of the band members actually speak Thai so arguably they don't know either.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 16 July 2021 22:13 (two years ago) link
re the Grifters tbh I just thought they were named after the bike (not really, but that was my reference for the word when I first heard them)
― bovarism, Friday, 16 July 2021 22:22 (two years ago) link
I feel like I heard of them not too long after the movie was in the theaters and thought they'd named themselves after a John Cusack movie, not unlike the rock band Say Anything.
― ... (Eazy), Friday, 16 July 2021 22:30 (two years ago) link
The Grifters is a perfectly good band name people. Having never heard their music, I have a pretty good idea what it's going to sound like based on that name (unlike Khruangbin). If I'm also assuming that they're a middling, anodyne band, it's only because I've never heard anyone rave about them, not because they got their name from a Jim Thompson book.
― enochroot, Saturday, 17 July 2021 01:17 (two years ago) link
Thrush Hermit. OK, I’d never actually heard of them before they popped up here but I’m just treating this thread as a repository for off-putting names at this point.
