I think that’s a reference to the Melbourne —> Vancouver connection thread.

Which in turn i think is probably a reference to Roza Terenzi and D. Tiffany? Though I’m reasonably sure both now life in Berlin, go figure.

Yeah. It's 2021 lads. clubbing is cloistered and boring, at least in the UK. any pretences it had to being inclusive have been elided by ever more expensive OTD prices and tighter than ever security. There's no spontaneity left in it, you have to treat a night at Printworks more like a consert. Rave utopianism was a cruel trick of history played on the good conscience of artists.

RobbiePires, Thursday, 1 July 2021 19:00 (two years ago) link

Thing In A Book was 1994, and Deep Pan was 1996. If the tens of hours of new material they've done since then (and everything between 1987 and 1996) is an annoying, tedious revival, it might be time for you to stop listening to all of it.

...and stop attending Underworld's regular fake rave utopian club nights, week after week.

I’m bemused that those two songs in particular are singled out for not being prog tedium.

Neither are basic channel tunes, and neither is e2-e4. The deep pan especially sounds like a very nice soulful techno track.

RobbiePires, Friday, 2 July 2021 04:47 (two years ago) link

Deep Pan would be well served by having a lot less vocals.

Born Slippy is 25 years old now, tbh the song that made me realize techno could create actual songs (mostly because I was an indie kid fixated mainly on vocals at the time).

Tim F otm throughout the thread. Idk if he was referring to new releases from Leftfield that I haven’t picked up on, but I recently heard a pretty decent ‘ardcore tune they made in the early 90s which I could try to dig up (it was in that 1st Fabio & Grooverider show on Kiss).

If Leftfield is prog tedium, what the hell should I use to insult Autechre

Saw the email and opened it to look for clues. That's nice they're outright saying New Music!

I'm not the biggest fan of "8 Ball" but I'll check that out. Reminds me I've been meaning to watch this recreation video, which looks like fun:

Noticed frogbs's post and realized I can't even hum Carp Dreams. I had to resort to Youtube to hear it. Fun track. Must fix up my library soon.

@sic - I remember from the poll that you supplemented the Dubnobass super deluxe in your library with everything left off of it, like I have. Have you done that for Second Toughest as well? I don't think there's nearly as much? Carp Dreams and Born Slippy Telematic?

They've literally just deleted all their Instagram posts and changed other social media profile pics etc in the last 24 hours, so feels like something could be happening soon

They’re playing Detroit on Memorial Day weekend. You think they’d throw a few more dates in to make it worth their whilst.

henry s, Monday, 20 March 2023 23:02 (one year ago) link

They're playing SF the same night as Bailter Space, which is annoying. (For me, not for them. I've already got Bailter tickets so there ya go.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 March 2023 23:33 (one year ago) link

five weeks between Coachella and Movement, seems likely they'll fill the time (though I suppose two festivals might pay enough to store their gear for a month and go home instead)

yep! :) the pickings are as slim as you note, but I rejiggered from three into into four 'bonus discs':

- on the Evolution Of NUXX I swapped out the full-length NUXX at the end for the 7.37 remaster from the 2012 Anthology

- made a separate Born Slippy LP with OG -> Telematic -> Nuxx full length -> Deep Pan

- and reworked the Extra disc into "Pearls & Gems":

Pearl's Girl (14996 Version) 9:05
Cherry Pie 8:25
Oich Oich [orig. 1993] 8:35
Mosaic 5:00
Deep Arch 8:25
Pearl's Girl (Tin There) 8:16
Puppies 3:54
Confusion The Waitress (Remix) [mix by Emerson] 7:29
Pearl's Girl (Carp Dreams... Koi) 10:09

Thanks! oh yeah, the Confusion remix.

Might rearrange playlist to more closely follow the Pearls Girl EP. The box order still trips me up. Oich Oich is perfect for coming down from the stressful Puppies, lol.

StanM, Friday, 31 March 2023 17:08 (one year ago) link

snippet on YouTube now, as a short.

Been no talk of a new Drift series for a long time? Could be a new album? Can't tell either way from the live sets since it's not as if very much of Drift 1 was ever played live.

Haven't listened to the bootleg recordings, just looking forward to hearing!

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 31 March 2023 17:22 (one year ago) link

Yeah, as much as I love this band half their live set has basically contained the same 5 or 6 tracks since the 90s

groovypanda, Friday, 31 March 2023 17:28 (one year ago) link

the hardcore fans have been complaining about that for a while. it sucks because those 2005-2008 shows seemed so versitile, they were all these totally streamlined 2-3 hour shows with a great mixture of hits, deep cuts, and new stuff. but they've just stopped doing that for a much more traditional greatest hits + a couple recent tracks type set. it sucks because they have such a rich catalogue. I admit of course I'm a wee bit more obsessive than the typical fan. and for what it's worth Orbital has this problem even worse

frogbs, Friday, 31 March 2023 18:04 (one year ago) link

The new songs sounded pretty bland based on the uploads that came out after the two shows in the UK last week. I'm afraid they have extended beyond their usefulness. Release the riverrun stuff on vinyl, issue a b-sides box set on vinyl for the ambient versions that have never been on vinyl, and then retire with your millions. 70yr old men do not need to be making techno. Underworld is my 2nd favorite band.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 31 March 2023 18:18 (one year ago) link

well I agree that stuff should all be on vinyl but personally I loved like 75% of the Drift stuff and think they should keep making music forever. also I am not convinced they have got millions sitting around. they draw big crowds sure but they do what, like 6 shows a year?

frogbs, Friday, 31 March 2023 19:42 (one year ago) link

I bet they’ve got a lot in the bank, w their other ventures and maybe even the olympics deal?

omar little, Friday, 31 March 2023 19:49 (one year ago) link

for what it's worth Orbital has this problem even worse

Orbital still play the songs differently from night to night — the big disappointment of the post-minisplit UW sets is that one of them clearly has to play the songs the same way every night bcz the other one doesn’t want to jam

(and maybe Drift S1 would have changed that if they’d been able to spend three years touring and doing more Drifts)

But yeah two boring new songs (haven’t heard ‘em) doesn’t mean hang it up forever when their last album was twenty hours long and their third-best ever

least said, sergio mendes (sic), Saturday, 1 April 2023 00:42 (one year ago) link

I'd be happier if they focused on music like Peach Tree, Breaking and Entering soundtrack, Faxed Invitation etc. Mellower, rhythmically interesting, lush epics.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 1 April 2023 01:17 (one year ago) link

i like it!

new BBC 6 interview introducing the track. They say they've been very productive and will still be working on new music during tour. Doesn't sound like an album is about to drop. Would not rule out more Drift!

maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 3 April 2023 13:07 (one year ago) link

awww I love interviews with these guys, they seem so nice

new track is alright, would be kinda weak as a lead single but I like it, reminds me of "Threat of Rain".

frogbs, Monday, 3 April 2023 13:22 (one year ago) link

UW had me slightly worried w barking (good but veering towards something I didn’t think suited them ideally) but BBWFASF and Drift really made my concern evaporate, I thought those were a pair of vv different but inspired projects.
