Has someone already identified flashmobs? I do remember them as a depressing content-free 2000s phenomenon.

Thinking about them now, I think the single most irritating thing was participants' self-satisfaction - as if they were doing something significant

Ha, I was actually talked into participating in one in the very early 00s near Liverpool St maybe where we all had to wear cricket whites for whatever reason. It was insanely boring.

looking back now its weird to realize that it peaked as a fad so long before the era of widespread smartphones and video-based social media. i remember hating flashmobs, but cant recall how i actually saw them. pictures on flickr? clips on local news?
