Just to be clear, for U.S. discogs users buying from UK sellers, there's no VAT correct? (i.e. Discogs collects only U.S. taxes as VAT wouldn't be applicable.)

birdistheword, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 16:44 (two years ago) link

Yes, it's on cross border purchases INTO the UK or EU (and under a certain amount above which the VAT is paid on import).

Although I have sold things to certain US states (California for one) that add on a sales tax that wasn't there a few years ago, but maybe that's for everything including domestic sales? Not sure how that all works tbh.

I’m a little uncertain as to whether VAT is going to be charge on UK to UK sales. Anyone know?

That's due to changing U.S. state laws. In the last 10 years, virtually every state has tried to reclaim "lost revenue" from internet sales that weren't taxed. At first there were specific details that had to be met like vendors that had operations within the state (which sometimes included Amazon, sometimes not, and as you can imagine that pissed off sites that had actual brick-and-mortar stores if Amazon was excluded), but over time the tax laws have been expanded to include ALL internet sales, taxing based on whether a purchased item was delivered to an address within the state.

Sales tax are done at the state level, so it all depends on when or how quickly each state legislature has been able to pass their own tax laws. There are exceptions - for example, I think Texas still has no sales tax for certain internet purchases.

Yes, VAT will be charged on UK to UK sales.

As a service to EU sellers who sell to buyers also located in the EU, and UK sellers who sell to buyers also located in the UK, Discogs will apply supply of goods VAT to all orders where the buyer is not VAT registered.

Thanks!

hamicle, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 18:07 (two years ago) link

There is no VAT on UK to UK sales if the seller is not registered for VAT. Nothing is changing there, I believe what it means is that for VAT registered sellers they will be able to list prices without VAT and the site will add the VAT for buyers that have to pay it. I'm aware that everyone seems to think it means VAT will be added to all UK to UK sales but that can't be right. Not long until we find out for sure.

Noel Emits, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 18:11 (two years ago) link

I don't get much from the UK, but I buy a few things from Germany each year shipped to the US. Anything changing on that front?

They phased this in state by state over several years, but I think as of 2020 all 50 states had made the switch.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 July 2021 03:24 (two years ago) link

No visible changes thus far in the UK.
Just taken an order from Germany - no VAT added.
Tried adding an item from the UK into my cart - no VAT added.

Noel's hunch was correct, and Discogs have changed their position: https://blog.discogs.com/en/uk-eu-vat-changes-on-discogs/

In short: no VAT to be added to UK to UK sales, or EU to EU sales. VAT to be added for UK to EU sales, EU to UK sales, and rest-of-world to UK or EU sales.

mike t-diva, Friday, 2 July 2021 10:10 (two years ago) link

I think they were attempting to assist with VAT calculation for intra-UK and intra-EU sales by VAT registered sellers and got confused. I think now unfortunately for IOSS registered EU sellers dropping that means they can't charge the right rates on sales to other EU countries at the moment.

Noel Emits, Friday, 2 July 2021 11:13 (two years ago) link

Which I realise is probably an esoteric concern for most here, just to say it's complicated and the markeptkaces have been given quite a task having to sort all this out.

Noel Emits, Friday, 2 July 2021 11:18 (two years ago) link

I just received a copy of Nort Star by Philip Glass and it is so heavy with surface noise I wonder if it is the actual copy El-P sampled for The Cold Vein. Was advertised as NM on discogs and I am wondering if I can even be bothered bringing it up with the seller.

burnt hombre (stevie), Monday, 5 July 2021 08:02 (two years ago) link

Like I don't even know how a record gets this noisy and doesn't look as if it has scratches on the surface

burnt hombre (stevie), Monday, 5 July 2021 08:03 (two years ago) link

I once weighed down my stylus with coins to stop it skipping, and that will do that.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 5 July 2021 09:08 (two years ago) link

I used to do that BITD too! But this doesn't skip, it's just really noisy, audible between tracks and in quiet passages, of which there are many on this.

burnt hombre (stevie), Monday, 5 July 2021 10:08 (two years ago) link

Or "wet playing".

You should at least mention it and see what they say.

Noel Emits, Monday, 5 July 2021 10:11 (two years ago) link

I'll definitely give it a "wet play" and see if that improves things.

I’ve been experiencing EXTREMELY long shipping times from Canada to the UK (and to a lesser extent, to continental Europe). To the point where I’m considering offering only tracked packets to international destinations (which is EXTREMELY expensive & would discourage sales). Anyone else having this issue?

"The Pus/Worm" by The Smiths (hardcore dilettante), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 14:39 (two years ago) link

Postage from Canada/US to UK seems expensive, whereas the reverse journey is a lot cheaper.

Mark G, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 20:27 (two years ago) link

Postage to anywhere from the US is expensive. When I ship Bandcamp orders from my label it's about $17 to the UK or EU or Asia (I've sent stuff to Japan and Indonesia in the past).

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 20:39 (two years ago) link

I'm wondering if Bandcamp should hook up with local pressing plants in other countries to offer a local disc service. Pretty much every time I (in Australia) consider buying a CD it's like $10 plus $17 shipping.

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 21:34 (two years ago) link

Looks like shipping within the US is going to be more expensive soon too. I've seen a few different people tweeting this news today, but this is the best I could find with a specific source:

This was an update I got from Pirate Ship. Signature Confirmation is also going up. pic.twitter.com/nEmkmZrV3L

Right now I send CDs first class with a tracking number within the US. It's between $4-5.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 21:42 (two years ago) link

I sell mostly surface mail to the US and Canada: much cheaper, usually takes two weeks to arrive, and the barcode is trackable once it arrives in the destination country. Sales to the EU, if there are now customs charges to pay (over about £22 or so, I think) tend to be more like three weeks.

12% isn't outrageous or anything. One lp (1 lb rate) will go up from $2.80 to $3.13, and incrementally by poundage.

Sold my first CD to Germany under new rules. I’ve printed out order page and have a couple of questions.

What is the title of seller, is it my username, my actual name or a title such as Mr?

The printout is a sheet of A4 about twice the size of a JL0 jiffy bag. Do I stick it to outside of the jiffy bag or do I put it inside?

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 7 July 2021 20:55 (two years ago) link

From what I’ve read, the invoice should go on the outside of the package. I haven’t yet sold a CD to the EU since the change, but I’m planning to use a larger envelope than usual, with the invoice folded inside one of my 7” clear plastic sleeves, such that it can be extracted, unfolded and examined. Just clicking “print” from the Discogs order page should give you all you need.

That's good to know. Media mail is definitely slower but I also take advantage of the one-pound coverage and pack the shit out of everything I send. Besides, I ended up with a ton of packing material due to pandemic shopping (i.e. doing a lot more via internet instead of in-store). I still recycle the all-plastic (#4 LDPE) material, but the mixed material and styrofoam material isn't recyclable, and rather than throwing it all into a landfill, I've been able to reuse it with plenty leftover.

Counting 11 (and more beyond what is shown, I'm sure) sales of the limited (to 333) "art" edition of Grouper's Grid Of Points all from the same p0pm4rk3t seller at the price point of the normal edition, therefore all sold using the the incorrect entry, and not a single complaint in the comments! Actually surprised. How many of those recipients even realized? That mega/warehouse seller so notorious for selling with the incorrect entry. Buyer beware.

Evan, Monday, 26 July 2021 16:54 (two years ago) link

after buying second hand records & cds online for literal decades, it occurred to me upon the arrival of my last discogs order just how good things have gotten when the seller included an extra blank jewel case on the off chance that the proper one might have gotten damaged in transit.

beats 20 years ago when i was trying to understand why ebay's customer service desk was contacting me about a complaint for a neutral feedback i left on a record that was advertised as "VG" but was unplayable because of how damaged it was.

things repeat forever and there never is a remedy (Austin), Wednesday, 4 August 2021 19:37 (two years ago) link

The bizarre thing about ebay's condition grades for CDs is the almost total emphasis on the jewel case rather than the media. Discogs is the other way round on the basis that they are interchangeable. Which obviously makes more sense, although not all jewel cases are created equal, the quality of plastic has got progressively worse since they were introduced.

My sales have went through the floor, one £3 CD sold in three weeks. Might be a summer lull or COVID worries but suspect the culprit is the new VAT rules to EU which have fucked things up.
