I thought the look of much of the trailer said 70s rather than 60s, but what do I know

Mule, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 06:47 (two years ago) link

Has Vera Farmiga fallen into the most bizarre niche of typecasting?

I don't see her that often--she was really good in Netflix's Halston film. In this one, I'd be more worried about Ray Liotta (among lots else, if the trailer means anything).

clemenza, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 11:23 (two years ago) link

We need Liotta’s character to be the godfather of Melfi or something

calstars, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 12:11 (two years ago) link

Xp

Nothing against Farmiga, it’s just that the last thing I saw her in was playing Norman Bates’s mother in the Psycho prequel

rob, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 13:00 (two years ago) link

They sure make her look like Carmella.

Other than this Sopranos movie and Young Sheldon - can you think of any other movies or TV shows where the offspring of one actor plays the same character first played by the parent?

I could not think of any others, but it has had to happen at some point I would figure.

earlnash, Thursday, 9 September 2021 00:49 (two years ago) link

Wait, the kid in Young Sheldon is Jim Parsons' son?

nickn, Thursday, 9 September 2021 00:51 (two years ago) link

Laurie Metcalf's daughter Zoe Perry plays Sheldon's mom.

earlnash, Thursday, 9 September 2021 00:59 (two years ago) link

Interesting bit up there ^^ that Chase talked to Ray Liotta about playing Ralphie, and he passed.

There's a 30 Rock episode where Tina Fey's daughter played a young Liz Lemon.

Also Kiki Kirin's daughter Yayako Uchida played the young version of Kiki's character Eiko in Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad.

Not surprised guy on the right didn't get called back for the movie, but if I ever get around to filming my bio flick about the band Jigsaw, I know who to call.

Awful movie and I physically recoiled at the ending.

Chris L, Saturday, 2 October 2021 01:13 (two years ago) link

I'm going to see it this weekend and watch it like I'd watch any horror film, peeking through my hands.

clemenza, Saturday, 2 October 2021 01:17 (two years ago) link

It turns out this is a case where the trailer very accurately conveyed what the movie would be.

Chris L, Saturday, 2 October 2021 05:52 (two years ago) link

fwiw, all the hullaballoo sparked a sopranos rewatch from me, i think it's only my second time through! Knocked out most of the first season in two days. I dunno if you guys know this or not, but it's pretty good!

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 2 October 2021 06:08 (two years ago) link

since 2010 I've watched it all three times I think, poor old Morbz only seemed to be taking it in a few episodes a year.

christ, this was even worse than the trailer made it look. The only positive thing I can say about is that because I stayed up late to watch it my dog was in the front of the house and scared off a possible burglar who must have been lurking about in the front garden while I was watching it in the kitchen.

calzino, Saturday, 2 October 2021 10:09 (two years ago) link

idk probably better enjoyed on a small screen. I had zero expectations and didn’t expect a crime-and-family story for the ages, just an extended episode set in the sopranoverse.

vera farmiga somehow channeling BOTH livia and carmela was worth the price of admission for me (in fairness, zero dollars). see also talia balsam doing proto-Melfi.

def feels like it should have been an 8-ep series instead of whatever it was but whaddyagonnado, eh?

poster of sparks (rogermexico.), Saturday, 2 October 2021 17:39 (two years ago) link

This was... weird and thin in plot. Agree the cast were great, esp loved the guy playing Syl leaning into those already-exaggerated mannerisms Van zant had in the show.

Even though I'd only watched all of the Sopranos fairly recently, i was struggling to follow who was who, and completely missed the significance/omg factor of what Uncle Jun did (no spoilers).

Deep in season two now.

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 3 October 2021 22:27 (two years ago) link

ive only watched it through once, couple second tries didnt take i think maybe theres just not enough plot momentum to motivate me for how ever many millions of hours it is regardless of how good they are, im not a huge show watcher to begin with tho, at least not by modern day standards, have gone back and sampled some eps i remember liking

lag∞n, Sunday, 3 October 2021 23:11 (two years ago) link

We just started a rewatch after originally watching it 15 years ago? Was immediately struck by how light hearted the first episode is compared to the later seasons. Also, when you aren't horrified at what is going on or going to happen the show is hysterically funny. My display name is how Tony refers to himself in a moment of self-pity.

Hannibal Lecture (PBKR), Sunday, 3 October 2021 23:13 (two years ago) link

its a very funny show! there are even a some great reoccurring bits, tony trying and failing to repeat some cool shit someone said to him, uh aj being a fuckin idiot, i actually cant remember any others but there must be some

lag∞n, Sunday, 3 October 2021 23:24 (two years ago) link

if i was a tv show quotes-saying person the only thing i would quote would be sopranos malapropisms and it would be all i would say in every conversation until i died

Clay, Sunday, 3 October 2021 23:29 (two years ago) link

yeah his malaprops are very good but a lot of what makes them brilliant is the way Gandalfini delivers them. Another comic element is the persistent verbal violence towards young Anthony who is the weakest and dullest character in the family anyway - so he deserved it!

Sil's bad Pacino impression, Ralph quoting Gladiator, Phil griping about '20 years in the can', Tony B breaking Tony's balls are some other good recurring bits

disliked the use of malopropism, just seemed like a lazy class signifier that tended to disrupt the otherwise deeply immersive dialogue. they really overdid them with Little Carmine imo

I've also only watched it through once, periodically fall into obsessive clip watching spirals on YouTube though which keeps me satiated ... there's a couple of channels that have decent themed compilations, kind of an interesting way to revisit the show in that watching certain parts presented in a new sequence outside of the original narrative structure can help elucidate otherwise missed or misunderstood plot points, character connections, etc

missingNO, Monday, 4 October 2021 05:09 (two years ago) link

shit I misspelled malapropism lol

One interesting aside in the first episode that I don't remember ever being focused on again was Tony mentioning he had three semesters in college (or community college, idr). He would almost assuredly be the only one from the crew with even that much school. There are many further examples of Chase setting Tony apart from the rest of the characters - the therapy, his watching the history channel, his occasional and brief struggles with conscience as opposed to the more straight up sociopathic foils each season. These all feel very manipulative to me because it leads you to separate Tony from the rest when he should not be.

I would like to say the malapropisms, in the case of Tony, are Chase's way of reminding us that even this guy, even the leader, is a total moron. I don't know though.

Hannibal Lecture (PBKR), Monday, 4 October 2021 11:07 (two years ago) link

Tony does mention college when in sessions with Dr Melfi IIRC, he brings it up if he feels like his intelligence is being questioned

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Monday, 4 October 2021 11:12 (two years ago) link

Yeah, Melfi is who Tony mentions it to in the first episode.

I can't forget that discussion on one of the Soprano's threads about which characters would have been a Trump voter and the answer is all of them (with the possible exception of Meadow and Melfi, but idk).

Another update, Paulie in the third episode: "Hassidim, but I can't believe 'em."

Hannibal Lecture (PBKR), Monday, 4 October 2021 11:21 (two years ago) link

I... didn't hate this? Although I went in with really low expectations, so that helped a little bit it seemed. Basically felt like a just fine extended flashback episode.

My dumb complaint is how fake all the fire looked, like did the budget get blown on using a Stones song so there wasn't much left over for special effects?

Also, I didn't think the thing at the coffin at the end was THAT dumb, given some of the other winking meta dream sequences and stuff from the series.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 October 2021 13:37 (two years ago) link

it was definitely a little too fan-servicey, the dialogue not as sharp, and yeah, keeping the family tree together after an extended period of not watching the show was difficult, but I did enjoy it for what it was.

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Monday, 4 October 2021 13:38 (two years ago) link

went in with low expectations and they weren't exceeded. a movie that is less than the sum of its parts, seems to be confused as to what it's trying to be. absolutely requires knowledge of the show to be meaningful in any manner, useless as a standalone object.

Pine Barrens episode - Tony on the phone to Paulie with a bad connection. "The guy you're hunting...he's like a Russian green beret...he was with the interior ministry...he killed like 20 Chechen rebels..."

phone goes dead

Paulie to Chris: "You're not going to believe this...guy killed like 20 Czechoslovakians...used to be interior designer..."

Vaguely Threatening CAPTCHAs, Monday, 4 October 2021 17:18 (two years ago) link

My favorite funny line from the show is from that episode, while Paulie and Chris are freezing in the van:

Chris: *wrapping the interior carpet from the van around his shoeless feet*
Paulie: "Eh, Bruno Magli!"

There are plenty of valid criticisms of this movie but I keep seeing this one pop up and I gotta say, I don't get it. Afaik, this was never marketed as something meant to stand on its own and has pretty clearly always been meant as an extension of the series. I'm sure some people are going into this blind but I can't imagine that's any significant chunk of the audience.
