Two year suspended sentence (plea deal), is now a registered sex offender.

Frightening testimony from victim:

According to the victim, who is now 19, she had maintained a relationship with Bell since she was 12-years-old.

“He was a hero to me. I would have done anything for him,” she said.

She says they maintained a relationship online.

She says when she was 15, the messages were “blatantly sexual.”

The prosecutor’s office says at that concert, “Bell violated his duty of care and, in doing so, created a risk of harm to the victim.”

The teen says Bell forced her to perform sexual acts backstage at the concert and again at a hotel room in Cleveland.

“He is a monster and a danger to children,” she said.

...

“He is sorry he’s finally been caught. He committed these crimes with pride,” she said.

“Jared Drake Bell is a pedophile and this is his legacy,” she ended.

Jimmy Urine of Mindless Self Indulgence. This is seriously gross stuff. Had always figured that he was around my age or younger, just based on the juvenility of his lyrics when I first heard them. Surprised to learn he is now in his early 50s.

https://www.theroot.com/nicki-minajs-husband-kenneth-petty-pleads-guilty-to-fai-1847652810

It seems Minaj and Petty’s lives are spiraling out of control, as of late. As a registered Level 2 sex offender on New York State’s Sex Offender Registry, Petty is considered to pose “a medium risk of committing another offense” (h/t USA Today) and was obligated to register in California. However, as previously reported by The Root, not only did he not do so, but he and Minaj allegedly attempted to bribe his accuser, identified as Jennifer Hough, into recanting her testimony, according to a lawsuit filed in August which “alleges that the couple attempted to convince the woman who accused Petty of sexual assault in the 1990s to recant her account by harassing and intimidating her.”

“The lawsuit says that an intermediary offered Ms. Hough $20,000 in exchange for signing a prepared statement recanting the accusation,” the New York Times reported. “At one point last year, the lawsuit says, Ms. Minaj called Ms. Hough, saying that she had heard Ms. Hough was willing to ‘help out’; days later, it says, Ms. Hough and her family members received an ‘onslaught of harassing calls and unsolicited visits’ from people she believed to be associated with the couple.”

Just a random question, but since the responsibility of the directing-producting crews have markedly gone up in the last ten years (I'm thinking especially about the sex scenes special counsellors for movies - but also about the clear reaction here from the director), cannot contracts with the cast directly include a notion of immediate financial compensation in case someone does something inappropriate on stage? I understand it might be difficult to cover every potential case, but as an added layer of protection before any judicial settlement?

100 current and former Sony employees say the head office should have stepped in to stop Handlin's abuse, misconduct, discrimination and systemic bullying slightly earlier than the 37 years they knew about and rewarded it.

"The kindest thing I could say about Denis was that he was sort of an equal opportunity abuser," former secretary McKay said.

"He was as mean to men as he was to women."

...

Handlin appeared to be proud of his ruthless management style.

In an internal staff video, he is seen dressed as Adolf Hitler while parodying a Mel Brooks comedy song.

By the late 1990s, Denis Handlin's leadership had become so volatile that annual staff turnover at Sony Music Australia was running at up to 50 per cent.

As the head of human resources, it was Greg Lockhart's job to clean up and cover up Handlin's abuses.

"There would be someone every day that I would have to put back together again from some drama that Denis had created the night before or the day before."

... Lockhart said he reported Handlin's behaviour to Sony Music's global head office in New York multiple times throughout the 1990s, but his concerns were ignored.

As the head of HR, Lockhart detailed how Handlin had ordered him to sack people for "not smiling at him", "not liking the physical look of someone", or "for being pregnant".

Handlin's orders didn't end there.

"Such is the level of Denis' obsession with total control that I have been instructed on a dozen different occasions to have personnel followed by private detectives," Lockhart wrote.

Some ugly shit going on around saxophonist Steve Coleman. TL;DR: He had an affair (as in, he was married at the time) with a much younger saxophonist who was also his student and occasional bandmate. It went bad, and she eventually went public, calling the relationship abusive and coercive. She even wrote an open letter about it, as an example of the overall atmosphere in the jazz scene. He sued her for defamation, and the court case is ongoing. Meanwhile, it's apparently had substantial career repercussions for him - he's lost gigs, etc. The press release for his new album reads, in part:

This recording would have been released in 2019 were it not for ongoing allegations that Coleman was involved in a #MeToo situation with a woman with whom he had a three-year long consensual relationship. Ultimately, we feel that this was a private matter between two adults, but the allegations were weaponized at a moment when the world was hyper-focused on this very important issue in an attempt to damage Coleman’s reputation and career, which has led to his de-facto blacklisting from most performance and teaching opportunities. Attempts by Coleman to defend himself have been stifled or ignored by largely non-black musicians and journalists who, without having reviewed the evidence, have prejudged Coleman based solely on gossip and hearsay. Substantial evidence has since been uncovered through the court discovery process that calls to question the veracity of the accuser’s claims, but the effort to harm Coleman’s name had more force and sway behind it in the unexamined court of public opinion, in spite of the racial biases on clear display. Those who might otherwise speak up in support of Coleman fear doing so because of concerns over personal repercussions.

Coleman continues to fight to clear his name, and Pi is staunchly in support of him in this matter, not because he is one of the most important artists in the history of the music, or because he is a member of the Pi family, but because we have examined the evidence and reached our own conclusion. We recognize that this is a complicated, sensitive and, for many, a personal issue, but hope to start a more nuanced dialogue in the jazz world about racial and gender biases and encourage a moment of self-reflection. We welcome your questions and would be glad to speak with you in greater detail on this important matter.

My basic reaction is "ugh", both because of the whole situation and because the two guys who wrote the press release are friends of mine. (The fact that I am not at all a fan of Coleman's music doesn't really enter into it, but FTR I'm not.) Plus, look at that bolded part. How is "my critics aren't black" a defense against allegations of sexual abuse?
