I eventually learned that toon Link is best for me. neutral special has full board range. Good down special w/ timed bombs. The up special is very easy to use for attacking above and for recovery. the moveset is also natural for the character with no strange reloading dynamic (olimar, splatoon, etc).

however, I think the various children and nephews of the board would feel Toon Link has "a low ceiling". I've watched pros play in tournaments on youtube, and I can't even really wrap my head around the way they play. Duck Hunt is an especially baffling juggling of TNT barrels and projected cowboys.

i regret to inform you all that the dlc characters are all better and more fun than the regular characters.

except byleth. fuck byleth.

I liked Toon Link as well. Never could find a decent main that felt right in Smash though

Love FE3H so maybe I'll get into Byleth... might finally pull the trigger on the character pass DLCs when it's all released

Nhex, Friday, 25 June 2021 01:06 (two years ago) link

first impression of mario golf is that the speed golf mode is actually less fun than regular golf in 1p (and most of the story mode uses it instead of regular golf). if you have any mario golf experience at all then time isn't a factor so it's functionally the same as regular golf except you have to spend time running to your ball which becomes a drag quickly. also you don't get to see your cool shots like if you get a hole in one it just kinda happens offscreen while you're running towards the green. same as real life i guess lol.

not a total dealbreaker but disappointing

ciderpress, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 13:07 (two years ago) link

the speed golf is kinda silly but battle golf and XC golf make up for it imo, XC golf in particular. plotting out the most efficient hole-to-hole route just to have it immediately torpedoed by cloud dudes or whatever is pretty good.

adam, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 13:23 (two years ago) link

Did you play multiplayer speed golf? I kind of assumed that was the intended market (like smash) for that

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 16:29 (two years ago) link

no and i'd believe it works better there especially since i think there's a scoring method that actually rewards speed but in adventure mode it doesn't really have a purpose other than to make you run everywehre

ciderpress, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 16:58 (two years ago) link

Ah, ok, good to know! hmmmmmm

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 18:58 (two years ago) link

Picked it up on Saturday morning.

Local multiplayer with motion controls is where the game will pay for itself. It has all the classic ingredients. Competitive and silly, fun and easy enough to pick up and start swinging but with enough depth to allow for micro-adjustments and fine tuning your swing, plenty of potential for getting it calamitously wrong at the most dramatic moment.

Ideal for a lengthy weed smoking sesh with friends, as is so often the case with local multiplayer Nintendo. The battle golf is really good chaotic fun.

Do feel shortchanged on the number of courses though and haven’t got much faith they will remedy that with DLC. Same issue with the most recent mario party. I gather they are about to drop a new MP with some classic N64 party boards but it’s still just remastered old content for which they are charging full whack

It’s Nintendo, so.

lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 14:47 (two years ago) link

Switch Max not for me either.

ciderpress, Tuesday, 6 July 2021 15:13 (two years ago) link

Fab capacity being meted out like senior and junior water rights

Clara Lemlich stan account (silby), Tuesday, 6 July 2021 15:18 (two years ago) link

Tempted to bite just because the battery would be the upgraded one from 2019, over the launch version. And the OLED screen does sound nice.

Nhex, Wednesday, 7 July 2021 04:48 (two years ago) link

Unless the nicer bigger screen means more power being drawn which means even with the 2019 battery you end up no better off than you were with the original model? I can't remember the specifics with OLED tech though, possible it's actually more efficient rather than less.

three weeks pass...

Anyone tried skyward sword yet?

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 31 July 2021 14:30 (two years ago) link

Playing it now. It's fun! Even though the tutorial stuff is interminable - my son got frustrated with the sheer amount of reading and exposition - I've read this has been toned down from the original which is a bit o_O.

Overall so far it's very much a classic Zelda with added 3D and motion controls. You can absolutely see the seeds of BOTW in it (in sometimes frustrating ways, like it has a paraglider only you can't steer, just descend straight down, and the early shields are appalingly fragile) but it's not BOTW. The main thing is it only gestures at being open world – you definitely have to some locations and tasks in a particular order.

stet, Saturday, 31 July 2021 21:51 (two years ago) link

It’s famous for being the most linear of all the zeldas. So much so that I could see it being a major wake up call to reset and make true open world work in the spirit of the original, resulting in BOTW

ciderpress, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 14:22 (two years ago) link

It's been so long since I played my Switch I literally forgot what I had bought for it. But if/when I beat Sekiro I think I'll finally try Hades!

I did briefly consider the new Wario Ware game, since iirc one of my kids liked a previous version, but if ever there was a game I will not pay $50 for it's that one.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 14:43 (two years ago) link

they're expensive, the games

balance transfer eligible (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 16:21 (two years ago) link

then again you probably regularly spend more than that on a much shorter experience that ends up in the toilet
