It was 59ºF in Little Rock this morning.

xp That's rough. My housemate's whole family chose this weekend to come to town and I feel bad for them as well. It's unnerving seeing these temps up ahead and not really knowing what to expect because I've never experienced Seattle in anywhere near that kind of heat.

The National Weather Service keeps bumping up the forecast high temps for my suburb of Portland. Two days ago they said 107° F on Sunday and 104° F on Monday. Now they say it will be 112° F on both days. The highest temp ever recorded for Portland stands at 107° F. Fuck.

oh shit that's terrible. Here it is currently 100, with 108 forecast for Monday.

I was in Europe during the heat wave of 2003 and I remember being absolutely miserable, but still being able to drag myself around the cities we were supposedly touring. I figured this might be sort of similar. Now I think I must have missed the worst of the 2003 heat wave, because this feels worse than anything I've experienced before. It doesn't really feel safe to be outside at all, unless you can stay in the shade the whole time.

If the power grid doesn't fail, we will manage OK in our house. We are also grateful to have several massive old trees in our yard that provide about 5 degrees of cooling just from them doing their normal thing all day.

i have a practice of walking/running about 5 miles a day and it's been hot enough lately that i've been going out later and later, but even at 1am it's going to be in the 80s the next couple of days so, uhhh, guess i'll learn to deal with that

jesus... this thread is reminding me why I never moan about 15°- 20° periods of UK summer with intermittent to constant rainfall and under a veil of grey clouds even when it isn't raining. It sounds fucking horrific lads.

So far today seems better than yesterday because it's breezy, but it's still early. Managed to get to the farmer's market around 11 and it was very hot but bearable. Some angel of mercy was walking around with a spray bottle of water, misting the market workers.

Walking back around noon, the heat started to feel pretty brutal again. Hope the breeze sticks around at least.

Apparently it is hotter in Hoquiam now than it has ever been in Tampa, FL.

This episode of extreme heat is not, all by itself, worse than 9/11. What's so horrifying is the prospect of the future it so plainly opens to view, a future that just goes on and on with no hope of reprieve for, at best**, many decades. It's beyond ominous.

Bah, this sucks. We got a small portable a/c that’s able to cool the bedroom, but that’s it. Rest of our basement apartment is like 80’F or more. There are a lot of folks out circulating around Portland doing water and ice distro for houseless folks, so at least that’s something.

Warmest morning in Seattle history, warmest low temperature in history, and the only time the temperature has topped 100F on consecutive days.

I am even more of an ignoramus about engineering and electrics than on most topics, but does it not look like it was touching a giant threaded piece of metal, such as the one behind it, that naturally became hotter than the air temperature?

it could also have been the steel strands heating up to a very high temp for milliseconds as the live popped and melting the PVC sheathing into that stranded pattern that looks like it could have touched the threaded metal, but I'm not pretending to be CSI electrical fault finder master here. Not done the job in years m8!

is this something that frequently happens in southern hemisphere hot countries as well?

i personally havent been in such hot weather (currently 37C / 98.6F) since i was a child holidaying in rome when it was over 40 degrees. was at the beach yesterday and a pool party on saturday. i think i am not leaving the apartment today.
